NORTHAM is a parish in Bideford Union, comprising the town of APPLEDORE, and the new thriving watering place of WESTWARD HO! containing altogether, by the census of 1861, 3687 inhabitants, and 4190 acres; in the deanery of Hartland, archdeaconry of Barnstaple, diocese of Exeter, hundred of Shelbear, North Devonshire; 1 mile south-west from Instow Railway Station, and 1½ north-west from Bideford; pleasantly situated on elevated ground overlooking Bideford Bay, with Lundy Island in the distance. The vicarage, in the incumbency of the Rev. Isaac Henry Gossett. M. A., is valued at £275 per annum, with residence, and is in the patronage of the Dean and Canon of Windsor. The church is a fine ancient edifice, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, in the Early Perpendicular style, consisting of nave, chancel, north aisle, north chancel aisle, and south transept, with tower and six bells, and has lately been completely restored. The Independents and Wesleyans have places of worship here. There is a school for children of both sexes, which was founded and endowed by the late Mrs Thorold, with house and 11¾ acres of land, the schoolhouse having been a religious establishment previous to the Reformation; there is also an Infant School. There is a revel or village feast annually on Whit Monday. There are charitable bequests for the benefit of the poor, producing about £120 per annum, and almshouses for four poor widows and four old maids. The remains of an old building exist at Kenwith Castle, where the Danish ensign was captured, on the defeat of Hubba and his forces by the Saxons under King Alfred.
