STAVERTON is a parish and large village in Totnes union, containing, by the census of 1861, 949 inhabitants, and 5356 acres; in the deanery of Ipplepen, archdeaconry of Totnes, diocese of Exeter, hundred of Haytor, East Devonshire, on the north bank of the River Dart, 3½ miles north from Totnes. The vicarage, in the incumbency of the Rev. Henry Fox Atherley, M.A., had the tithes commuted, in 1842, at £385 per annum, with residence and three acres of glebe land, and is in the patronage of the Dean and Chapter of Exeter, who are also appropriators of the rectorial tithes, which were commuted at £460 per annum. The church is an ancient edifice, dedicated to St. George, in the Early English, Decorated, and Perpendicular styles, consisting of nave, chancel, and tower, with a peal of six bells, and containing some handsome stained glass windows. There is a National School for Children of both sexes. There are several charitable bequests for the benefit of the poor. The Dean and Chapter are lords of the manor of Staverton, and owners of the greater portion of the parish; John Maye, Esq., is lord of the manor of Barkington, and Lord Cranstoun is lord of the manor of Pridhamsleigh.

PENN RECCA SLATE QUARRIES, which have been worked for several centuries, are situate at the north portion of the parish, about 2 miles from Ashburton; they are now in the hands of a joint stock company, who have effected considerable improvements in the mode of working, and employ about 100 hands. In the reign of Charles I. Ashburton Church was roofed with these slates.

WOLSTON GREEN is a hamlet of this parish, including LANDSCOVE, which was formed into a separate ecclesiastical district in 1852; and a neat church, dedicated to St. Matthew, was erected there by Miss Champernowne, at a cost of about £3000. The living is a vicarage, valued at £100 per annum, £75 being paid by the Dean and Chapter of Exeter as appropriators, and £25 by the vicar of Staverton; it is in the incumbency of the Rev. Thomas Inglis Stewart, M.A., and the patronage of the vicar. There is a National School for children of both sexes, and the Wesleyans have a place of worship here.

SPARKWELL and STRETCHFORD are also hamlets, forming part and parcel of this parish.

The rateable value of the parish is £8423.
