Contact.   Transcribed by Deborah O'BRIEN Checked by Val HENDERSON Page 883   WALKHAMPTON is a village and parish in Tavistock union, containing, by hte census of 1861, 831 inhabitants, and 10,540 acres; in the deanery of Tamerton, archdeaconry of Totnes, diocese of Exeter, hundred of Roborough, South Devonshire; about 1½ miles north-east from Horrabridge Station, on the Launceston and South Devon Railway, 5 south-east from Tavistock, and 10½ north-east from Plymouth, on the borders of Dartmoor Forest. The vicarage, in the incumbency of the Rev. Charles Henry Walker, had the tithes commuted, in 1839, at £141 per annum, with residence and 21 acres of glebe land, and is in the patronage of Sir Massey Lopes, who is also impropriator of the rectorial tithes. The church is a neat edifice, in the Perpendicular style, pleasantly situated on an eminence, and consisting of nave, chancel, north and south aisles, and an embattled tower surmounted by pinnacles, and containing six bells. The Wesleyans have a place of worship here. There is a Free School for children of both sexes, which provides for the education and clothing of forty boys and twenty girls, and was endowed by Lady Modyford in 1719. A new schoolroom was erected in 1863, from the accumulated funds of the Charity. The poor have charitable bequests producing about £15 per annum.
