  OGWELL (WEST) is a village and small parish in Newton Abbot union, containing, by the census of 1861, 51 inhabitants, and 683 acres; in the deanery of Ipplepen, archdeaconry of Totnes, diocese of Exeter, hundred of Wonford, East Devonshire; 3 miles south-west from Newton Abbot, 7 north-west from Torquay, and 8 north from Totnes. The rectory, in the incumbency of the Rev. Fitzwilliam John Taylor, B.A., is united with East Ogwell, and is valued at £110 per annum, and in the patronage of Daniel Robert Scratton, Esq. The church is an ancient cruciform edifice, situate on an eminence, consisting of nave, chancel, north and south transepts, with an embattled tower containing three bells. Daniel Robert Scratton, Esq., is lord of the manor and chief owner of the soil.
