Kingsbridge is a small market-town and parish, in the south-east extremity of the hundred of Stanborough; 207 miles from London, 34 from Exeter, 12 from Dartmouth, and 8 from Modbury; situated upon an arm of the sea (which is navigable up to the town, for vessels of 60 or 70 tons burthen), and upon a branch of the Salcombe river. According to Risdon, it derives its name from the bridge which separates it from Dodbrooke, and has been variously written Kingesbryge, Kyngysbrygge, and Kingesbridge. It is a pleasant little place; the principal street, called Fore-street, runs the whole length of the town; the ground on each side descending, upon which are formed gardens, which much improves its appearance. At one period the woollen manufacture was of some importance here, but that has almost entirely gone to decay; the principal trades are tanning and malting, the latter branch being carried on to some considerable extent. The church, which was dedicated in 1414 to St. Edmund, the king and martyr, stands in a cemetry on the west side of Fore-street; it is a vicarage, in the gift of the crown; the present incumbent is the Rev. Robert Lane. Here are also several meeting-houses for dissenters, and one for the society of friends. A free grammar-school was founded here in 1670, by Mr. Thomas Crispin, of Exeter, who endowed it with £3o. per annum for its support. Duncombe's trust gives £50. exhibitions, to young men at either of the universities; and £10. each for apprenticing 15 boys, with £10. in addition to assist them in commencing business. The country around here is hilly, and embraces views exceedingly extensive, and heightened in beauty by a fertile soil, under a fine system of agriculture. The market is on Saturday, which is a very large one for corn; the annual fair is the 20th of July. Kingsbridge parish contained, by the census of 1821, 1,430 inhabitants.

Dodbrooke, a parish, with a small market-town, is in the hundred of Coleridge, separated from Kingsbridge by the bridge; situated on a small stream called the Dod (from which it derives its name), near its influx into the Salcombe. This town is celebrated as the first place where the pale ale was brewed, but perhaps more so from the circumstances of the tithes having been demanded for it; a small sum is now paid annually by each retailer of it, in lieu of the tithe. It was here that the humorous satirist, Dr. Wolcott, better known as 'Peter Pindar', was born. A considerable cattle-market is held here every third Wednesday in the month. Dodbrooke contained in 1821, 885 inhabitants.

POST OFFICE, Fore-street, Kingsbridge --- Letters from all parts arrive from Modbury every morning between six and seven, and are despatched to that town every evening at hal-past four.
