HARBERTON. Lower, the Harburn adopteth into its name Harberton, where Alric the Saxon sometime lived. Since Roger le Bigod was seized of lands. Of this place the Vaultorts had their barony. Roger Vaultort died without issue, and left his honour unto Corbet and Pomeroy, his kinsmen, descended from his sisters; which honour Roger Vaultort had with Joan, one of the daughters of Reginald, earl of Cornwall, base son of King Henry the first. Sandwell is the seat of Thomas Risdon, a branch of the house of Bableigh, the ancient dwelling of that family, a man well learned in the laws, and well allied. He married the daughter of Hawkins, his father the daughter of Gifford, his grandson the heir of Bremelcombe. Ingleborne did anciently belong to the abbey of Buckfastleigh, and after the dissolution, John Wotton bought it of king Henry the eight. (146)

Herwarsore, in Harberton parish, was parcel of the land that Robert le Bastard held held in the conqueror's time, and continued in that name unto king Edward the third's reign. Then it was the land of Whitleigh, and was in that family unto king Henry the seventh's time. Then this heitage came to Roger Grenvile, by Margaret his wife, one of the co-heirs of Richard Whitleigh, of Efford, and he conveyed it to John Drake, of Ash, in marriage with Amy, his daughter. Halwell is hereby, whereof a family of signal note took name, that dwelt in this parish divers generations. Thomas Halwell was heir general of sir John Chiverston, being his sister's son; and sir John Halwell, knight, contended with sir William Courtenay for Chiverston's lands. Richard Halwell married the daughter and heir of sir John Norbury, of Stoke, in the county of Surry, knight, and had issue Joan his only daughter, married unto Edward Bray, of Kitton, whose son John lord Bray died sans issue, and his inheritance was divided between his six sisters:- Anne, wife of George Brooke lord Cobham, Elizabeth, first wife of sir Ralph Vernery, secondly of Richard Catesby; Frideswide, the wife of sir Percival Hart; Mary, married to George Peckham; Dorothy, wife to Edward Bridges lord Chandois; and Frances, the wife of Thomas Lefeild; but this fell to the portion of Vernery.
