Trinity Episcopal Church
Founded in 1752
When William Crawford, founder of Portsmouth, laid out the street plan in 1752, he designated the intersection of High Street and Court Street as the town center and set aside space for a parish church. In 1761, when the Vestry of Trinity Church was formed with Crawford as a member, the original church building comprised most of what is now the nave.

St. Paul Catholic Church
Designed in 1897 by John K. Peebles, eminent Virginia architect, the present St. Paul's Catholic Church, built in Gothic Revival style, is considered one of the most beautiful in Virginia. Constructed of North Carolina granite and Indiana limestone, the domed building has a slate and iron roof-a possible fire deterrent.
