The Monroe Hotel

The Monroe Hotel is also known as a historic building, having harbored several presidents and some of the best know Confederate officers.

In crossing to the South Norfolk side and thence to Norfolk, one may view the quaint old St. Paul's church, where during the war of the revolution a cannon ball was shot through one of its walls. It has been preserved and may to this day be seen in the wall.

Other nearby points of interest to travelers of the new highway, are historic Yorktown, where Lord Cornwallis surrendered to General George Washington. Here also may be viewed the cave where Lord Cornwallis is reputed to have held his headquarters during the closing days of the revolution.

Then there is Jamestown, where the first English settlement was made in 1607, with John Smith as leader. A monument and shrine have been placed there in honor and memory of these first settlers.

ca 1928
