Van Rensselaer C. Wisner site: JCC demonstration 1995

A Ku Klux Klan demonstration at the Jewish Community Center in Maitland, Florida on October 28, 1995.

The following are photographs (very bad ones, I should add) taken at a Ku Klux Klan demonstration at the Jewish Community Center in Maitland, Orange County, Florida on October 28, 1995. A large crowd of anti-Klan demonstrators and spectators turned out (my brother and I among them), hearing about it through word of mouth and from a local radio show host who encouraged the public to have an anti-demonstration. The demonstraion lasted for an hour or more. The demonstrators then must have decided that they had said what they wanted to say and filed themselves away to their automobiles. As they began walking, the crowd took notice and began moving towards them, proud taunts and shouts tossed ahead, and the police flipped down their face shields, preparing for the possibility of violence. None occurred (that I know of) and the Klansmen and Klanswomen drove off up Maitland Blvd. A confederate flag was acquired by the anti-Klan demonstrators and was burned.

Very bad shot of the Klan demonstration.
Another bad shot of the demonstration.
News helicopter circling overhead.
The demonstrators pack up and turn to leave...
...and the anti-demonstrators follow, causing a commotion.
The anti-demonstrators, such as this man, watch as the demonstrators get into their cars in the wooded area across the street.
The watching and commotion continues.
A confederate flag (belonging to the demonstrators?) that the anti-demonstrators are trying to set on fire.
A man holding up the flag victoriously, which caught fire with the help of a piece of paper as kindle.
The Southern Cross and the Old Glory.
A photographer taking a picture of the withered piece of cloth.
Another picture of the smoldering flag.
One more for good measure.
