The Old Dutch Church of Sleepy Hollow

The following is taken from "First Record Book of the 'Old Dutch Church of Sleepy Hollow' Organized in 1697 and now The First Reformed Church of Tarrytown, N. Y.," An original translation of its brief historical matter, and a copy, faithful to the letter, of every personal and local name, of its four registers of members, consistorymen, baptisms, and marriages, from its organization to 1791, by Rev. David Cole, D.D., Yonkers, N. Y., Published by The Yonkers Historical and Library Association, 1901.

FIFTH DIVISION (OR "BOOK").

Dirck Storm's heading, original and translated, of the register of marriages, followed by the register itself from 1687 to 1790.

Marriages.

This is the fouth and last of the four great registers, viz., the Register of Marriages.  The following is Dirck Storm's heading to it in the original Dutch:

HET VYFFDE BOECK DER NOTITIE.

THE ENGLISH

THE FIFTH BOOK OF RECORDS

In which will be shown the persons who, after three public proclamations, were confirmed in the lawful state of marriage here in the Church of Philipsburgh, since the year 1697.

In coming now to the register itself, it is necessary to state, that of 457 entries contained in it, more than half are loaded down with a fulness of statement which we could not reproduce in this volume without almost doubling its size.  And unnecessary fulness of words marks all the entries even to the end.  To illustrate, I give the first entry on the original register, in its own words, thus:

"Year 1698.  On the 30th of October, after three previous church proclamations, were confirmed in the lawful state of marriage, in the sight of God and His church, Abraham De Revier, J., j.m., born on the Island of Casant, in the parish of Gouda, with Rachel Van Weert, j. d., born on Long Island, in the vicinity of Midwout."

Of course my entries must give every date, name, place, and other particular found in the original, and must be responsible for preserving the precise spelling of every personal and local name.  But I must condense these long statements, and the method I adopt will appear in the register as given below.

As to names of places in the copy, they will be given in every case in the actual spelling of the old book.  The names Acquackanonck, Bedford, Canada, County of Richmond, Catskill, Esopus, Eastchester, Gowanus, Gravesend, Hackinsack, Haverstraw, Harlem, Keswick, Kinderhook, King Street, Long Island, Manor of Cortlandt, Manor of Fordham, Manor of Philipsburgh, Mamaroneck, New Utrecht, New York, Northcastle, Oyster Bay, Philadelphia, Poughkeepsie, Schenectady, Switzerland, Tappan, Tuckahoe, Wesel, West Farms, and Yonkers will need no explanation under any of the disguises in which they appear in the register.  As for the names that may give trouble to some, the table below explains them:
