Some military records of the French dominion are at the National Archives in Ottawa. They are in manuscript form and on film:

  • Troupes de colonies, 1627 - 1758: colonial troop lists.
  • Personnel militaire et civil, 1685 - 1765: civil officers, military officers, clergy, etc.
  • Dossiers personnels, 1626 - 1816: salaries, promotions, pensions, service records, land grants, vital records, and notarial records.

Records of the French soldiers who served in America during the French and Indian War (Guerie de Sept Ans) from 1758-63, are at the Archives Nationales du Québec in Sainte-Foy. The most famous of the French regiments is the Carignan-Salières Regiment, which was sent to Canada in 1665 to secure the colony from Mohawk and Iroquois attacks. About a third of the soldiers remained in Canada permanently.

  • Sulte, Benjamin. Histoire de la Milice Canadienne-Française, 1760 - 1897 (Montreal: Desbarats, 1897). History of the French-Canadian militia, 1760 - 1897.
