In Antrim this tax census was done in 1862; this varied across Ireland.
Plot numbers are the plot number on the Ordnance survey map that goes with Griffiths Evaluation. On some versions of that map one can identify the exact land.
Sections of County Antrim are unfortunately mixed up.
Normal quality land was typically evaluated at 1 pound an acre in County Antrim, except possibly close to Belfast. Land valued at less than that was poor quality land, often used for grazing.
Of McKinstry's who lived in houses, most were valued at either 1 pound or 15 shillings. I don't know how thse two values would have differed.
Only the County Armagh McKisntry's had wealth. None owned their land, though there are records of atleast two from Ballinderry registering as freeholders or freemen in the 1830's. If you look at their wills, though, it isn't necessarily true that poorer McKinstry's werent attaining middle class standards of living, and a number reflect a Presbyterian outlook on life.
The Ballyclare area McKinstry's, though located only six to eight miles from Carrickfergus, strongly appear to be an independent line, descended from John McKinstry Sr who lived in Ballynashee in 1666. See McKinstry snippets. See this map of their distribution; roughly the townlands where they lived are shaded. The wills on the snippets page clearly show that across the parishes within this area, in the mid to late 19th century, members of immediate families were scattered across the parishes. It is quite clear that Robert, owner of the large farm in Glenwhirry parish, lived in a different parish. In other words the families were as closely related as they look. Also, a close look at Griifths indicates that there may have only been under ten, maybe only seven or eight, McKinstry families in the entire area.
The McKinstry board at Rootsweb contains two posts from American descendants of the Glenhead, Ballywhirry family, and a third from an American descendant of a memer of the same family who inherited another family farm in Ballyclare. Evidently a number of one family, atleast, probably more, emigrated, sometimes after having their children born in Ireland.
There were also McKinstry households scattered along the coast between Larne and Carrickfergus, including Templecorran. There was a cluster of McKinstry's in the southern tip of County Antrim, and a smaller one in Shankill, and of course McKinstry's in Belfast. Tehre was a small and wealthy family in County Armagh, though by the end of the 19th century they were descending to the level of ordinary farmers.
An elderly man wohse family had lived in the Ballinderry area wrote to Susan Perong that his family was descended from the Ballyclare McKinstry's, but I find no direct evidence of that, and the elderly man also claimed that the Ballyclare family was descended from Roger, when it is clearly descended from John who was of the same generation as Roger. He appeared to be following cues in the letter he got. Susan is probably not familiar with the Irish method of doing genealogy. ;) The Irish imaginatively tie together and embroider family histories over mugs of ale. They tend to believe that everyone of one surname is related, and many otherwise scientifically sophisticated Americans share the belief that 20% of the people of Ireland, who share one Y DNA SNP, are direct descendants of Niall of the Nine Hostages, a legendary early medieval king.
