Elder Isaac Heath and brother William Heath were joined in New England by various relatives. These included their brother in law John Johnson of Roxbury, widower of their sister Mary Heath, and their nephew and niece, Edward Morris of Roxbury, and Elizabeth (Morris)Cartwright of Boston.

Edward Morris and Elizabetn (Morris)Cartwright may have taken another sibling, Isaac Morris, aged 9, who was on the opewell in 1635 in the company of John and arbara Ruggles of Nazing, Essex, probably same as Isaac Morrison baptized at Great Amwell 3 Feb 1625/6. He may have died young as no further record of him.

General Notes for Child William HEATH

Douglas Richardson, The Heath Connection, English origins of Isaac and William Heath of Roxburgy, Massachusetts, John Johnson, Edward Morris, and Eizabeth (Morris) Cartwright. NEHGR, 2992, 271-278: "American genealogists have been aware for some time that hte immigrant John Johnson (ca 1590-1659) of Salem and Roxbury, Massachusetts, was related in some way to Elder Isaac and William Heath of Roxbury, and that the Heaths were also kin somehow to the immigrant, Edward Morris, and to Morris's sister, Elizabeth (Morris) Cartwright. Such kinship is proved by a series of Johnson, Heath and Morris Wills, reviewed by Reay G. Hurlburt in Capt Johnson Nd his wife, Margery of Roxbury - Who were They?" in TAG, 22 (1945-6); 47-49.

John Johnson in his will proved in 1659 called Ellder Isaac Heath his loving brother, and named him overseer in his will. Elder Isaac Heath's will dated 10- Jan 1660/1 referred to three knfolk; cousin Martha Brand, whose maiden name was known to be Heath, kinswoman Mary Mory *John Johnson's daughter(, and kinsman Edward Morris. Isaac Heath's widow Elizabeth in her will proved in 1664 naemd 'my cousin Capt Johnson. Isaac Heath's widow Elizabeth in her will dated 26 Sep 1673, named her cousin Isaac Johnson, cousin, Pepper (a Johnson son in law), cousin Bowen, cousin Bartholomew, and cousin Nathaniel Johnson's wife. All of these relatives can be identified as children and grandildren of the immigrant John Johnson.

It looked as though John Johnson was married to a sister of Elder Isaac and William Heath, adn that Edward Morris and his sister Elizabeth were the nephew and niece of Johnson's wife and of the Heath brothers.

In 1978 Peter Walne, County Archivist of Hertfordshire, published evidence which proved that the immigrant Heath brotehrs had their origins in hte adjacent parishes of Ware and Great Amwell (NEHGR, 132 [ 1978]: 20-21. He did not mention Johnson or Morris.

Richardson used Family History Library films of parish registers of Ware and Great Amwell to search for all entries for Johnson, Heath and Morris. John Johnson's wife and the mother of Edward Morris and his sster were Heath's. Further, the Heath brothers were first cousins to Martha Heath, wife of George Brand of Roxbury.

The family tree I have put together here is from these articles.

1992 NEHGS article says that the name of William's wife has not been found. However, apparently her father and uncle named her in their wills.

That William and not either of his brothers Robert or John, was the father of the next generation, is strongly suggested by the fact that he inherited his father's house there, to the exclusion of his brothers. He was probably established there already. The Ware parish registers do not name the father of children baptized there between 1581 and 1604, but the spacing of baptism suggests that there was only one Heath family having children in this period of time. Beginning 8n 1604, the registers include the father's name, and that year William's son Thomas was baptized. This was probably his last child. No further children for this William appear in the registers of Ware or Great Amwell.

From Douglas Richard, update:

New evidence on the Heath line has confirmed that William Heath, Sr., of Ware was the father of the immigrants Isaac and William. An inquisition taken at Ware, Hertfordshire, 20 June 1628, mentions an earlier indenture dated 20 March 1612/13 where by Humphrey Spenser of Ware, gentleman, citizen, and haberdasher of London, and John Thorowgood of Ware, yeoman, acting as trustees, conveyed various properties to a large number of inhabitants of Ware, among them William Heath and Isaac his son .

General Notes for Child Margaret HEATH

Married and had children. She may be the Margaret Heth who m in the adjacent parish of All Saints and St. John, Hertford, Hers., 26 Nov 1571, John Norris. She d. probably before 6 March 1592/3 when her father in his will left a bequest to her unnamed children.

General Notes for Child Robert HEATH

Living 6 Mar 1692/3, when his father made his will. He may be the Robert Heath "Dwelling with Thomas Heath at Ware end" who was buried at Great Amwell, Herts., 6 Oct 1603. He evidently had children, who are mentioned but not named in his father's will.

General Notes for Child Joan HEATH

livng 6 Mar 1692/3 wehn she was named in her father's will, m and had children. No further information.

General Notes for Child Elizabeth HEATH

Living 6 Mar 1592/3 when she was named in her father's will; married at Ware 3 Dec 1582, John King, possibly the man of that name buried there 17 May 1593. Children, bp at Grat Amwell, named in grandfather's will, surname King: 1. Margaret, bp 18 Sept 1583, m at Great Amwell, 29 Dec 1607, William Curtice. 2 John bapt 24 July 1586.

General Notes for Child Thomas HEATH

Probalby the Thomas Heath buried at Ware 19 Cot 1616; m there, Nov 29, 1599, Agnes Woodburne. He was named in his father's will 6 Mar 1592, /3, apparently not yet married.

General Notes for Child Ellen HEATH

Living, unmarried, 6 Mar 1592/3 wehn her father named her in his will. She may be the Elinour Heath buried at Ware 16 May 1604, or the Hellen Heath buried there 10 Jul 1626; it is less likely that she was the Helene Heath who m there, 29 March 1608, Richard Archer.

From http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sunnyann/fisher.html by P. Davidson Peters - he has the Anthony Fisher's mixed up, and I do not know if the Fiske's are really of aristocratic descent.

Anthony Fisher was at syleham until atleast 1623. In Denton, Norfolk, about six miles from Syleham, in 1626 and 1629, the baptisms of two children of Anthony and alice were ercorded. In March, 1636, according to the will of his brother John, he was still living in Denton. anthony arrived in New England probably in 1637. First record of him in the colonies is 18 Jul 1637, when he appears on a list of those accepted by the town authorities in Dedham.

Anthony Fisher, son of Anthony and Mary Ann (Fiske), had been baptized in Syleham, county of Suffolk, England in April of 1591. In 1637 Anthony Fisher, his wife Mary (Buckingham), and their children Anthony, Cornelius, Nathaniel, Daniel, Lydia, and John came to Boston, departing most likely from Yarmouth in the ship Rose, and arrived in the last week of June. They settled in Dedham and subscribed to its covenant on July 18th of that year.

Mary Ann (Fiske) had descended from an ancient family who, until a recent period, had its seat and manorial lands in Laxfield, in the county of Suffolk, England. Lord Symond Fiske, the grandson of Daniel, was Lord of the Manor of Standhaugh, parish of Laxfield, and had lived during the reign of Henry IV and VI (1399-1422). His eldest son William had lived during the reign of Henry VI, Richard III, and Henry VII, and died about 1504. His grandson Robert had fled England with his family during the religious persecution, returned, and later married Sybil Gould who had been in great danger as had her sister Isabell Gould, who had been held in the Castle Norwich. Had Sybil's brothers not had such powerful influence in the county, it is believed by Sybil might not have escaped death.

The emigrant Anthony Fisher was said to have had a proud and haughty nature so that although his wife Mary (Buckingham) had joined the Dedham Church in March of 1642, he was not comfortably accepted until some time later. He was, however, made freeman in May of 1645 and had been chosen Selectman to act in town affairs in Dedham between the year 1646 and 1647, two years later became Deputy to the General Court, and in 1660 was County Commissioner. When he died in his 80th year on April 18th of 1671 in Dorchester it was said of him that he was "an Englishman of strong and positive character, and that for the times, he had liberal means and was considered favorable by his fellow-settlers and citizens." He and Mary's children were Anthony, Cornelius, Nathaniel, Daniel, Lydia, and John Fisher.

General Notes for Child Lydia FISHER

daughter of Anthony and Mary Fisher, according to Samuel Morse Genealogy.

I found an Anthony b 1558 and Mary b 1560 as parents for her.

I have a later Anthony son of Anthony and Mary as her parents.

Parents were misidentified in Morse genealogy. From http://www.obliquity.com/family/records/fisxxx01.html by David Harper and Lynne Marie Stockman, based on

The Fisher Fallacies

The genealogy of Anthony Fisher and his descendants is a good case study of the way in which information can be misinterpreted, incorrectly copied and even creatively embellished to produce a plethora of contradictory, inaccurate and confusing versions of the same basic facts.

Anthony Fisher was one of the earliest settlers in North America, and as a result, many Americans can trace their family tree back to him. The rapid growth in the use of personal computers and the web as tools for genealogical research has enabled many hundreds of Fisher descendants to trace their lineage back to Anthony Fisher.

Unfortunately, many of the most commonly-used sources of genealogical data contain information that is inconsistent, ambiguous or just plain wrong. Some common errors include

Misunderstanding the geography of England, so that towns and villages are placed in counties hundreds of miles from their true locations, and county names are confused with the names of towns.

Attempting to "correct" dates taken from original records prior to September 1752, in an effort to force them to fit the modern calendar. This often leads to several versions of the baptismal record for the same individual, with dates that differ by 11 days or 22 days or a single year or a year plus 11 days.

Confusion between two people of the same name living in the same (or a neighbouring) village. These are often cousins who were named after a shared grandparent, or given a name that was popular within that family.
Confusion caused by different spellings of the same name, which was very common even as late as the early 19th century.

Assuming that a connection exists between two people, when there is no documentary evidence to support it. This sometimes happens when a researcher wishes to establish a link to a notable person.

At Obliquity, we are fortunate to have direct access to the English county record offices which house the primary sources of genealogical information for that period: the parish records of births, marriages and deaths.

Our information on the Fisher family is taken from these primary sources and is as accurate as we can make it, taking into account the difficulties of translating the fading and often illegible handwriting in centuries-old parish record books.

The People

Agnes Fisher

She is often omitted from the Fisher genealogy but she does appear in the baptismal and burial records of Stradbroke as a sister of Anthony Fisher I.

Alice versus Mary Bockenham/Buckenham/Buckingham

What was the name of Anthony Fisher II's wife? Mary is usually quoted, apparently based on church records in Massachusetts. However, her name appears as Alice in the baptismal records of her last two children, Nathaniel and Cornelius. Perhaps the surname of Buckenham (in various spellings) has been confused with the married name of her sister-in-law, Martha Buckenham nee Fisher.

Which Anthony Fisher?

Occasionally there is confusion over whose children are whose. The families of Anthony Fisher I and his son Anthony Fisher II are sometimes lumped together in one large family
.
Hester Fisher

She is often omitted from the Fisher genealogy but she does appear in the burial records of Syleham as a daughter of Anthony Fisher I.

The "twins" Joshua and Mary Fisher

Joshua Fisher and his sister Mary were baptised two years apart in two different parishes. If they had been twins, it is much more likely that they would have been baptised together.

Leah Fisher

She is often omitted from the Fisher genealogy but she does appear in the baptismal records of Syleham as a daughter of Anthony Fisher II.

Lord of the Manor of Syleham

Some sources give one of the Anthony Fishers as "Lord of the Manor of Syleham." There were, in fact, three manors associated with Syleham. The Manor of Syleham Comitis has existed since Saxon times and the Manor of Esham dates back to at least 1285. The third manor, which no longer exists, was variously called the Manor of Syleham, Monk's Hall, Tylney's Hall, or Syleham Hall. Monk's Hall is now a private home and we were very privileged to be invited inside by the owners when we visited Syleham in early 1997. There is absolutely no evidence, however, that Anthony Fisher or any other member of the Fisher family was lord of any of these manors. Is this an example of delusions of grandeur by an ever-hopeful descendent?

Various spellings

Bridges versus Brigges versus Briggs.
Bockenham versus Buckenham versus Buckingham.
Marie versus Mary.
The Places
Custrichhall, Weeley, Essex

This location (in various spellings) often appears as the birth or baptismal place of various members of the Fisher clan, all because Amos Fisher lived here after his marriage in 1633.

East Bergholt, Suffolk
The same problem arises with East Bergholt. Cornelius Fisher, the brother of the aforesaid Amos, worked as a clerk (clergyman) here until his death in 1641.
Syleham, Weymouth, Suffolk
Syleham, Suffolk, Kent
Weymouth, Suffolk

These particular combinations of place names are often found in various sources on the web and elsewhere. Here is a small lesson in English geography:

Syleham is a village in Suffolk.
Suffolk is a county in the east of England.
Weymouth is a town in Dorset.
Dorset is a county in the southwest of England.
Kent is a county in the southeast of England.
The proper combination is Syleham, Suffolk, England. Perhaps Weymouth has been confused with the East Anglian port town of Yarmouth (now called Great Yarmouth) from which it is thought that Anthony Fisher II departed England. Where Kent comes in is anybody's guess.
Pre-1637 events in Massachusetts
The Anthony Fisher II family did not arrive in America until 1637 so none of the children (John, Daniel, Lydia, Leah, Anthony, Nathaniel, Cornelius) could have been born there.
Various spellings
Custrichhall versus Custrich Hall versus Custridge Hall.
Weeley versus Wesley.

I have three Barber/ Barbour families, clearly related, clearly a fascinating tale.

Richard Barber, b 1565 Stradbroke, Suffolk, England
i
E. Barber b 1597 m Henry Brock
i
i
Mary m 1639, Stradbroke, Henry Phillips
i
i
Elizabeth m Robert Gowing
i
i
Priscilla m William Robbins, descendant married into the Morse line down the line.

Nicholas Barbor b bef 1566, Laxfield area, Suffolk, England
m Sibilla Gold, persecuted for Protestantism, remarried
Robert Fiske, persecuted for Protestantism.

Sibilla's sister Isabel Gold, also persecuted for Protestantism, married someone named Phillips.

Sibilla Gold and Robert Fiske had Anthony Fisher., of Laxfield, Suffolk, who went to Dedham, Massachusetts; a daughther married Daniel Morse, from Dedham, Suffolk, England, to Dedham, Massachusetts.

George Barbour, born to Thomas Barbour on 28 Dec 1613 in Fressingham, Suffolk, went to Dedham Massachusetts, married first Elizabeth Clark, a daughter married Jonathan Morse, son of Daniel Morse above from Suffolk to Dedham Massachusetts. George Barbour married second JOanna Faxon, who was previously married to Anthony Fisher, son of Anthony Fisher above.

All of these people were founders of Dedham Massachusetts, even though only some of them are known to have travelled to Massachusetts and clearly they arrived there on separate UFO's (that on occasion actually disembarked in WAtertown); and noone has noticed that they knew each other well in England, nor has anyone noticed that history of religious persecution ties some of them together.

English ancestry of Joshua and Anthony Fisher (NEHGR 1997) doesn't mention a wife for him. He was only 21 when he died.

General Notes for Child Robert BIGGE

Robert was born Bef. 1500 in Beneden, Kent, England and died on January 13, 1546/47 in Benenden, Kent, England. He is buried in St. George the Martyr of Benenden, Kent, England. He married Elizabeth in Benenden, Kent, England in ca. 1530. She was born Abt. 1510 in Benenden, Kent, England and died in Benenden, Kent, England.
Robert's estate was probated June 2, 1548 in Archdeacon Court, Canterbury, Kent, England.(54) Born during the reign of the first Tudor, King Henry VII, he lived through all of the reign of Henry VIII, and died under the boy king, Edward VI.
The identification of this Robert with the son of Edward Bigge is not proven, except by coincidence of place and age. His will was extracted by Elizabeth French (NEHGR, Jan. 1912): "The Will of Robert Bigge of Benenden, 13 January 1547/8. To be buried in the churchyard of the parish church of St. George the Martyr of Benenden. Alms to be distributed at the day of my burial. To wife Elizabeth, if she continue unmarried, all my stuff and household implements; if she marry again, half my stuff and household implements to my daughters, to be equally divided at age eighteen or day of marriage. To my wife all my corn and sundry livestock. To my son Walter two steers. To my sons Richarde and Thomas a heifer each at eighteen, and to my son John two steers at that age. All my cattle, wheat growing, and other moveables unbequeathed to be sold by my executrix and the money employed to pay my debts. I give to my wife Elizabeth my lease of churchfield, and make her executrix and William Fowle of Benenden overseer. My wife to redeem two pieces of land at Walkhurst, mortgaged to John Moyse of Byddenden for 10 pounds, and also to pay to Elizabeth Vsborne 40 pounds for which I stand bound.

"My last will regarding the disposition of all my lands and tenements. I will to Elizabeth my wife for life my messuage and garden at Benenden forstall and four pieces of land at Walkhurst, she releasing all her right of dowry in all my lands. The messuage and garden at Benenden forstall to go to my son John and his heirs at my wife's decease. To my son Richard and his heirs at my wife's decease four pieces of land at Walkhurst. My executrix to take the profits of all my other lands and tenements until they amount to 40 pounds, to be paid to Elizabeth, Dorothe, Elionor, and Alyce, my daughters, to each 10 pounds at day of marriage or age of twenty years. If any die before such day or age, reversion to the survivors, to be equally divided. After the said 40 pounds be levied I give to my son Thomas and his heirs forever my messuage and lands at the lane of Rolvenden and my half of a meadow called dukes mede in Tentwarden [Tenterden], of which Lawrence Day holds the other half, and a piece of marsh land at Frencham containing ten acres, my executrix to have the said lands until son Thomas come to the age of twenty-two. After the said 40 pounds be levied, to son Walter and his heirs forever seven pieces of land called the sixe acres, Wadyfeld, gardeyn of begtylte, the porteke, the upper shurfeld, the Longfelde, and the nether shurfeld, lying upon the den of Begtilte in Benenden, he to pay to my son Richard 20s. a year during the life of my wife and after he enter into the said land. After the said 40 pounds be levied, I give to son John and his heirs a piece of land called the field about the house and another called Euerynden's felde, both upon the den of Bigtilte.

Witnesses: Willm Fowle his mark, John Asten, Lawrence Davy, and Henry Asten. Proved 2 June 1548 by the executrix named in the will. (Archdeaconry of Canterbury, vol. 8, fo. 2.)"
