General Notes (Husband)

I have one source with him born in Wethersfield, Worcester, MA, which I think is a place that was in Connecticut - but I think if he travelled around it was later.

I have entered just one of his children by Sarah Haines; she married a FRENCH.

He married twice. He married Sarah HAINES Northampton, Hampshire, MA, 15 Jun 1662. (Sarah HAINES is #696.) Sarah was born in Springfield, Hampden, MA abt 1642. Sarah was the daughter of Edmond HAINES and Hannah ?. Sarah died 7 Dec 1691 Northampton, Hampshire, MA, at 49 years of age. Her body was interred 1691 Bridge St. Cemetery, Northampton, MA. He married Hannah DICKINSON 30 Nov 1692. (Hannah DICKINSON is #12688.) Hannah was born in Billingborough, Lincolnshire, England abt 1636. Hannah was the daughter of Nathaniel DICKINSON Dea. and Anna ?. Hannah died 17 Jul 1723 in Hadley, Hampshire, MA, at 87 years of age. Clifford L. Stott, "The correct English origins of Nathaniel Dickinson and William Gull, settlers of Wethersfield and Hadley," NEHGR, 152 (1998):

Hannah, or Anna.

On 16 Jun 1670 Hannah first married John Clary, son of John Clary & Sarah (-23 Dec 1681), in Hadley, MA. Born ca 1632. John died on 10 Feb 1690/1.

John Clary of Hadley, admitted freeman Feb 1678/9 was probably a son of John of Watertown.

On 30 Nov 1692 Hannah second married Enos Kingsley.

Enos, of Northampton, married Sarah Haynes first.

Information from Jim Berrie -

The parents of Enos Kingsley were John and Alice (Thatcher) Kingsley of Rehobeth.

Apparently Enos arrived in Northampton on his own about 1659, and married Sarah Haines there.

The dates for all children were found in the Northampton VR's.

From J.R. Trumbull's "History of Northampton" - "Among other arrivals in 1659, were George Sumner, Enos Kingsley and Ralph Hutchinson. The first two named came from Dorchester, and the last from Boston. To each of these men was granted for a home lot eight acres of upland, lying on the 'westerly side of ye Mill River'. But by a special vote they were each required to pay twenty shillings to the 'Townesmen at demand thereof', and were also to build upon the lots and hold them four years, before obtaining title. At a subsequent meeting the amount to be paid for them was reduced to ten shillings, and the condition of four year's possession repealed. This was the first instance in which the town demanded payment for land granted to settlers."

"These were among the first lots taken up on South Street. They were double the size of ordinary home lots, situated some distance from the settled portion of the town, and by reason of the intervening river, much more difficult to access."

When an inventory of the town was taken, Enos Kingsley still owned his 8 acre home lot, plus 18 acres of meadowland.

His name does not appear on the church Covenant signed in 1661, and he did not take the 'freeman's oath' until 1687. One can only speculate as to why this is.

When a portion of the town was attacked by Indians on October 28th, 1675, Enos Kingsley's house and barn were burned by the marauders. Kingsley, Preserved Clapp, Ralph Hutchinson and William Smead lost all of their possessions, including the crops that had been gathered into the barns. They all fled across the river into the town, and there were no reported deaths, however they all became dependant on the goodwill of the townsmen to keep them from starvation. Application was made in 1676 for lots located inside the fortification, or palisades, that were erected that year, but these lots were not granted until the following year (1677).
