General Notes (Husband)
of same Hubbard line as Martha, l-12
His death date must be wrong; his children were all born to a ghost!"
"Joanne" sent me some pages of data from "the Olive".
Savage says that Jonathan was a brother of John Hubbard of Boston. The will of Robert Merriam, dated Dec 10, 1681, mentions his cousin jon. Hubbard who lives with me. The term cousin is quiote likley ot mean nephew. Merriam also names wife Mary and cousin Isaac Day, in Old England, son of my siter Joan Day. Henames also brothers Joseh an dGeorge and their children, three daughters and two sons.
Now Shattuck in his History of Concord says that the wife of Jonathan Hubbard was Hannah Merriam, niece to Deacon Robert. But she is not mentioned in Roberts will, neither is she found in the lists of the children of his brothers Joseph and George. Deacon Robert had no children. George had a daughter Hannah who was married to William Taylor.
Joseph, who died early, was ancestor of most of the Concord Merriams. His will, dated Oct 29 1640, is given in NEHR . 2 page 184 but gives no listo f children. In the Concord History are mentioned John who married Mary Cooper in 1663 and had John, Nathan, Joseph, Samuel and "some daughters". Joseph married Sarah Stow 1643, left one daughter. The family was of consequence in Concord. Deacon Rboert married Mary Sheafe. He died Feb 18 1681 age 72. It is to be noted that this is befoer the marraige of Jonathan Hubbard, showing clearly that the legacy of land was not made on accout of his marriage to Hannah, whihc marriage did not occur until a year later.
It seems generally accepted that the mother of Jonathan Hubbard was Mary Merriam. Her name was Mary. As no evidence is advanced, for the name Merriam that name is likely to be a guess arising from the relationship mentioned in the will of Robert Merriam. But the vital records of the immediate family of Robert allow no place for a Mary who might have been mother to Jonathan Hubbard.
It is quite as likely that her name may have been Sheafe. Some color is given to this guess inasmuch as Mary Sheafe Merriam is quite as insistant as Robert over the relationship. She names him "cousin' and twice speaks of him living with her. She names "cousin Jonathan Hubbard that now lives with me and cousin Samuel Merriam" as her executors. Jonathan's father was somewhat of a roamer, and Jonathan had for long made his home with the Merriams. Jonathan's father was John Hubbard, and his grandfather, it is supposed George. George Hubbard is supposed to have come first to Water town, tho have removed in 1635 to Wethersfield. He bought his Guilford property when he decided to go there in 1648, from Jacob Sheafe, brother of Mary Merriam. This was when John was 18, just the courting age. [The implication is that Mary Merriam was nee Sheafe; she had married a Merriam.]

General Notes for Child Ebenezer HUBBARD
Ward's Rice genealogy has him married to a different person, and has him with same death date.
