mother of the author, JOhn McKinstry Merriam, of "the McKinstry Name in STurbridge and Southbridge". Her mother and father were leaders in teh newly organized Methodist Church. Grew up on family farm.

She met her husband while walking down teh street at the village on some errand. He came from Concord to work in the counting room of the mill.
