General Notes (Husband)
A Robert or Roger McKinstry left the Edinburgh, Scotland (Midlothian, E. Lothian, W. Lothian Counties) Scotland, moved to Armagh, Ulster County, Ireland in 1669. A son who studied at the University of Edinburgh for the clergy and a grandson emigrated to Massachusetts during the 18th century. A genealogy is available of the descendents of REv. John McKinstry. Willis wrote a small book on the Massachusetts McKinstry families (another emigrated from Ireland to Pennsylvania); he thinks all of those families are related, but there is not direct proof.
Willis thinks William's father and grandfather also emigrated from Scotland to Ireland (with ancestor of John McKinstry family) but doesn;t say why he thinks so.
Names dictionaries insist the name McKinstry had been in Ireland sice atleast 1300, evolved from Gaelic for "son of the traveller", probably from Scotland originally. One clue would be, all Irish failies there for centuries were Catholic, Catholics and Protestants never intermarried and never converted back and forth. All Protestants recently from Scotland, England or, a substantial number of them, France.
William McKinstry came to Boston, MA, in 1740, at age 18, moved to Medfield, MA, where he remained for about seven years. He may have worked as a hired man for the Plimpton family. (from John McKinstry Merriam: The McKinstry Name in Sturbridge and Southbridge). He saved up and bought 60 acres of "New Medfield", on Jan 15, 1747/8. Worcester Deeds book 27, p 124. He added to this first purchase in 1748 by deeds from Reuben Ellis, Benjamin Dunton, and Gershom Plimpton, recorded book 51, pp 293 and 303, and book 53, p 536.
A family tradition that William McKinstry came to this country in 1747 and bought from King George of England one thousand acres for one shilling an acre is not borne out by the records.
Some of the settlers of MEdfield organized a new village nearby; "New Medfield". New Medfield became STurbridge, and that part of Sturbridge eventually became Southbridge. In Worcester County. The Morse family was among the leaders.
The land that William McKisntry settled, in 1748, on was teh part of Sturbridge that is now Southbridge, MA. The farm has ever since been occupied by his descendants in a direct line to the present day.
THere is a family legend that William McKinstry selected his tract after spending a comfortable night sleeping on a ledge called "Birch Rock", on the McKinstry farm, but the actual story of William's gradual purchase of the land from the original surveyor and from neighbors is entirely different from the legend. The family nevertheless prize the rock. He served on a town Committee of Safety during the Revolution.

Inherited one third of his father's land, including the house (which was still standing in 1947). Part of the house apparently was intended for use of the Baptist Society, which may have met in the kitchen.
Wiliam Morse succeeded as the occupant and owner of his father's home. A sample of his record keeping has been preserved; "indicative of his careful accounting and may we say his Scotch thrift. It also shows a nice cursive hand.
