General Notes for Child John ADAMS

I do not know where the birth information nor the name of a wife come from - besides Ancestral File.

John Adams is a proven brother of Henry Adams. He was the eldest son of their father John - who was born in 1555. Ancestral File supplied the father with a son who was his twin brother!

John Adams Sr made out a will in a hurry three days before he was buried, and did not live to sign it nor have it witnessed. In it he specified that his son John got his inheritance only if in four years from the date of his will he was living with his children and caring for them, and that relatives and not John would oversee their property and expenditures. This was in 1603/4. A wife was not living at that time and my sources say her name is not known. The executor was Henry who did not press the will. But in due time all of the heirs of this will were called before a court, the will was produced, and a guardian for the children who benefitted from John Sr's will was appointed, though this appears to have included all children named in the will. John Jr died in 1609, and his widow and Henry were his executors under his will. Then everyone had to appear in court again, if that wasn't the one time they appeared in court.

My sources have no other proven children of John Sr though they may have existed. John and Henry are known as John Sr's children only on account of the wills and estates of John Sr and John Jr. Younger brothers and sisters would not necessarily have been mentioned at all, apparently since the chief concern of this dying man was apparently to protect the interests of John's children.

General Notes (Husband)

He did not come to MA with his parents. HE was admitted among prprietors of Dedham, MA, 1637, admitted to church in 1640,"giving good testimony unto the Church of the gracious workings of the ordinances upon his heart to the obedience of faith."

1636, granted land adjacent to Joseph Morse. Sold his land in 1654, removed to Boston, followed the trade of a tailor; the following year he wrote his will and went to England, "evidently taking the larger portion of his goods with him for the purpose of trade". He drew his will just before he left..

Mentions his wife, Annas. The will was probated 6/18/1657. He also cites his "brother and friend Francis Chickering". Morse genealogy takes the position that Annas was Annas Chickering, sister of Francis. G. Andres Moriarty argued that seh was not. (NEHGR 100:79, 1946)

Moriarty argues specifically,

"Miss Leavitt based her statement upon the fact that JOhn Morse in his will (printed in The Register vol 8, p 278) called Francis Chickering "my sister".

"The account of the English ancestry of the Chickerings (The Regiester, vol 69, 00 276-29) and the will of Henry Chickering of Ringesfield, Co Suffolk, father of Francis Chickering, dated 11 July 1626, proved 7 July 1627 (cf The Register, vol 63, p 282), fails to disclose a sister of Francis Chickering named Annas. Francis did have a sister, name unknown, who was married to one Nicholas Wolnough, when their father HEnry made his will. It is of coruse possible that her name was Annas and that she married secondly John Morse but this seems rather remote possiblity and the chances are greatly in favor of some other combination to make John Morse call Francis Chickering "my brother". Their wives may ahve been sisters or gain they may have been merely "brothers" in the church. At any rate the evidence was not sufficient to jutsufy Miss Leavitt in stating without qualification that Annas, wife of John Morse, was sister of Francis Chickering. "

John is the first child of Samuel listed in Morse genealogy.

His estate eventually was enumerated for 385 pounds.

General Notes (Wife)

She appeared to be a sister of Francis Chickering. Joseph called him "my brother". Francis Chickering married Anne Fiske, a sister of Rev. John Fiske, minister at Wenham and Chelmsford - see his entry in this pedigree.

General Notes for Child Mary BIGGE

Her parentage is controversial; I have two sets reconstructed from the same set of wills and so forth of the Bigge family of Kent. The family were clothiers.

I've adopted James as teh father as the primary parents because I've seen the argument for how it was derived; the argument for the other parentage exists. The Bigge family traces back nearly to 1400 through their wills, in the Cranbrook area. They seem to have always been clothiers, fairly well off.

The parents of John Bigge, clothier of Cranbrook, Kent, have not been identified. John Insley Coddington (NEHGR, Oct. 1938) said John "may well have been a descendant of Richard Bigge of Cranbrook, clothier, whose will, dated 4 November, 24 Henry VIII [1532], and proved 5 Aug. 1533 (P.C.C., 5 Hogen), was printed in Emmerton and in Waters' `Gleanings,' p.11." The author has examined the wills of that Richard Bigge and his son Gervase, and leans toward John, the son of Richard's son James, as the best candidate. However, James is not known to have had a daughter Elizabeth, and did have a daughter Susanne. James did have only two other known children, named John and Mary.

According to one breakdown, one individual had the following children.

+ 2 i. John2 Bigg.

+ 3 ii. Elizabeth Bigg.

+ 4 iii. Mary Bigg.

2. John2 Bigg (Parent of John1) (#1687) birth date unknown. His remains were interred August 13, 1605 in Cranbrook, Kent, England.(2)

He married Rachel Martin September 14, 1583 in Tenterden, Kent, England.(3) (Rachel Martin is #1686.) Rachel was born before June 17, 1565 (chr. date) in Lydd, Kent, England. Rachel was the daughter of James Martin and Joan Adam. Rachel died circa 1647 in Dorchester, Suffolk Co, MA. She was christened June 17, 1565 in Lydd, Kent, England.(4) Rachel's estate was probated November 17, 1646 in Suffolk Co, MA.(5)

John was employed at as a clothier. John's estate was probated October 30, 1605 in Consistory Court, Canterbury, Kent, England.(6)

One of John's sons mentioned "my Aunt Mary Bridger of West Peckham and her two sons, Robert and Thomas Betts"; in his will.
