General Notes (Husband)

Samuel Winch was of Sudbury in 1670, when he bought 8 acres of land from Samuel How at Lanham after King Phillips War, and in 1671, when he occupied land in the South Bounds. A few years later he settled in Framingham (though it was not incorporated until 1700?), and was an original member of the Framingham Church. Elizabeth Winch, spinster of Great Alhallows, London, in her will, made 1659, calls herself "bound for Virgina" and names brothers Richard and John. Much speculative genealogy has been based on this. "It is thought that John may have been teh father of Samuel of Framingham, Mass. Virginia was often used to mean America". My information is from Rootsweb Worldconnect; crews-james and Anderson-Larson databases. Information on Samuel Winch is fairly standard and there is not much of it. The little that is cited on him was taken from several town histories in various New England locations. Only one database actually ventured to give him a father - John Winch. Not everyone lists both wives and children of both.

General Notes (Wife)

"Wilmington of the Adirondacks", (2nd ed.), 1974, pgs. 33-35. See also: Letters and research from Mary McKenzie, Lake Placid Historian. Samuel was in Sudsbury as early as 1670, when he bought 8 acres of land of Samuel How at Lanham after King Phillips' War. _________________________________________________________________ "New England Captives carried to Canada between 1677-1760 during the French and Indian Wars" by Emma Lewis Coleman. In this two Vol. set there is a story about the Indian Attack at Salmon Falls a little village at the Piscataque River. In this story they list the people the Indians took as captives, on the list was a woman listed as Barnard, Benjamin's wife. Following the list the go into an explaination of each person mentioned. The following is what they say of this woman: Barnard, Sarah (Wentworth) "Benjamin Barnard's wife of Salmon Falls was rescued by Captain Church at Fort Androscoggin in Sept. 1690. Benjamin died in Watertown in 1694. He was of York company in 1685 and 1689, and owned land bordered by that of Richard Tozier. In 1705 Paul Wentworth, Uncle of the Barnard children was made their guardian." This seems to show that Mrs. Sarah was daughter of Elder Williamand sister of Elizabeth (Wentworth) Tozier. In 1698/90 Sarah married Samuel Winch of Framingham"
