Birth from Sturbridge town records
Marriage in Sturbridge town records.
Ived in Southbrdige, on the family homestead. He was a member of the HOuse of Representatives of Massachusetts in 1858 from Southbridge.
His wife, Keziah Batchelor, of Charlton, Massachusetts was a sister of Rev. David Batcheller, a well known Methodist clergyman of his time.
John was the next occupant of the family homestead.
"His personality is well described in a letter to me from my cousin Elizabeth whose composition I have quoted, and from which I now quote:
'Once when your mother was here, I gave her an old letter, our grandfather wrote to our grandmother, when he was in Boston, as representative from Southbridge -- I remember ti began "HOnored Madam" and gave advice to the boys, Prevostus, Francis and Otis about the farm work -- you know, he taught the district school witners, when a young man and named his first boy, Prevostus, and first girl, Manilla, as a change from the more common names that most of his scholars bore. He was a masterful man and was called King John, by his help and neighbors. He was a tall man - 6 feet, dark and spare, energetic, with a taste for books, and writing, adn with little or none, of the Yankee twang, and dialect common at that time, though he liked to coin words, and to express his ideas in an original manner. He was born in this house, which was then in Sturbridge, and built by his father, who was William, son of William, the Scotch Irish man, from Carrickfergus, Ireland.
Births of his children are recorded in his family bible.
Some samples of his writing:
From a letter:
"Rec'd yours with much exultation relating to nuptial affairs."
"Having been requested by your parents (whom it is my duty and delight to obey) I once more take my pen to write a few lines; although in a rhapsody style. "
"But alas - religion does not prosper in the towns hereabouts - the people's conversation is principally upon political disputes. "
"O Lord thou are worthy fo our best tahnks and greatest eoncomiums and Thy name deserves to be perpetuated in our hearts."
Another letter: "The day I left Marblehead I came to Salem, sold my cheese to advantage, bought salt very cheap, came to Medford that night, and on the third night reached home." Another letter lists the produce he has to sell.
On his winter's work as a school teacher:
"I began my school Dec. 2nd shall finish it the forepart of March next. I have a very large school (84 scholars). When I reflect upon the great multitude of youth that have been and are now entrusted to my care, I feel sad and responsible for the education, morals and manners of the rising generation that I interrogate 'Who is sufficient for these things'. But notwithstanding I am under sucha serious restriction, yet I feel a delight in my employment."
Many of these letters were to Rev. David Batchellor, above.
On the social life of Sturbridge: a four page outline of an argument in the Village Lyceum on the question, "Has the general state of Society in New England been improving for the last hundred years?"
"The discussion of this question has occupied the attetnion of this respectable Society three evenings; in which time many things have been brought forth by those on both sides of the question to show the former and present Characteristics of Society". He contrasts "self interest" with "selfishness", the first commendable, the second implying covetousness and reprehensible and concludes that on the whole there has been a gain which is reason to hope for continuing gain, that we now 'enjoy facilities much more calculated for improving the general state of Society than was the condition one hundred years ago."
"
General Notes (Wife)
Her brother, Rev. DAvid Batcheller, was a well-known Methodist clergyman. Inherited the McKinstry farmhouse.
From a letter by a cousin contemporary with John MErriam:
"Once when your mother was here, I gave her an old letter, our grnadfather worte to our grandmother, when he was in Boston, as representative from Southbridge -- I remember it began "Honored Madam" and gave advice to the boys, Prevostus, Francis and Otis about the farm work - you know, he taught the district school winters, when a young man, and named his first boy, Prevostus, and first girl, Manilla, as a change from the more common names, that most of his scholars bore. He was a tall man -- 6 feet, dark and spare, energetic, with a taste for books, and writing, and with liitle or none\, of the Yankee twang, and dialect common at that time, though he liked to coin words, and to express his ideas in an original manner. He was born in this house, which was then in STurbridge, and built by his father, who was William, son of William, the Scotch Irish man, from Carrickfergus, Ireland.
A letter dated 1808 to David Batcheller begins, "Rec'd yours with much exultation relating to nuptial affairs."..."Having been requested by your parents (whom it is my duty and delight to obey) I once more take my pen to write a few lines; although in a rhapsody style."...."But alas- religion does not prosper in the towns hereabouts - the people-s conversation is principally upon political disputes."
He liked to participate in a local debating club. He seems to have taken religion and moral matters very seriously. He often quoted passages from the Bible in praise of God.

General Notes (Husband)
Notes for JOHN WARREN:
From "Bullard and Allied Families"
He had a homestead and seven other lots, aggregating 188 acres. John
Warren, though a member of the Puritan church, was in sympathy with the
Quakers, and was the subject of much criticism and abuse by certain church
officials. He retained his membership in the church, however, and died,
at peace with its doctrines, December 13, 1667, aged 82 years. His wife
Margaret (surname unknown), died November 6, 1662. His will dated November
30, 1667, was proved December 17 of that year..."
Per SAVAGE, VOL 4 DICT. FIRST SETTLERS OF New England
JOHN, Watertown, came probably in 1630, in the fleet with Sir Richard
Saltonstall, then aged about 45, and having wife and children (four
certainly are named in his will, and of them only Elizabeth could be
born here). There may have been others, but no record of birth or
death is found. He was admitted freeman 18 May 1631, chosen selectman
1636-40. Late in life he fell under the censure of the laws, unwisely
levelled at dissenting from the religious course of the major part of
the inhabitants and Bond informs us of proceedings against him in 1651,
1654, and 1661; but he died in peace, 13 December 1667, aged 82. His
wife Margaret died 6 November 1662. She was probably the mother of all
his children John, born 1622; Mary; and Daniel, born 1628; beside
Elizabeth who married about 1654, James Knapp. Mary married 30 Oct.
1642, John Bigelow.

John Warren, of Watertown, MA, probably arrived in 1630 when he was 45 years old, and was the son of John and Elizabeth (Scarlet) Warren. He was baptized 1 Aug 1585 in Nayland, Suffolk Co., England and died at Watertown 13 Dec 1667, aged 82.
John and Margaret Warren are clearly listed on ship's lists on their arrival in the New World. All their children were born Nayland, Suffolk county, England. While undoubtedly their four surviving children came with them, the children are not mentioned as passengers. They came from Nayland, Suffolk, England, where seven baptisms and three burials indicate the size of their family. No marriage record exists for John and Margaret. He married about 1614 Margaret Bayly, daughter of William Bayly of Westbury, Gloucestershire, England. (William Bayly's will dated 2 March 1613/14 mentions John Warren, "now husband of my daughter Margaret".)
John and Margaret settled in Watertown where he was made a freeman May 18, 1631. In 1635 he and Abraham Browne were appointed to lay out all highways and see that they were repaired. He was a Selectman of Watertown in 1636 and 1640, which was a position of high regard. However, he does seem to have lost some favor with the authorities sometime thereafter as can be seen from the old records: October 1651 he and Thomas Arnold were fined 20 shillings each for an offence against the laws concerning baptisms; April 4, 1654, he was fined for neglect of public worship, 14 sabbaths, each 5 shillings = 3 pounds and 10 shillings; March 14, 1658-9, John Warren was warned for not attending public worship, "but old Warren is not to be found in town"; May 27, 1661 the houses of "old Warren and Goodman Hammond" were ordered to be searched for Quakers. Despite his lack of conviction for the established church and his leanings toward the Quaker faith, John never gave up or lost his church membership. He may have kept his membership to avoid losing some privileges such as voting, etc.
By the time the first inventory of grants and possessions was taken in Watertown in 1639, John had acquired 278 acres of land, including (1) a homestall of twelve acres bounded west with the highway, east by William Hammond, north by John Biscoe, and south by Isaac Stearns; (2) nine acres of upland bounded south by John Biscoe, north by William Hammond, and east and west with his own land; (3) three acres of meadow bounded east by William Hammond, north by John Simson, and west with his own; (4) thirteen acres of plowland in the further plain, lot 84; (5) thirteen acres of meadow in the remote meadows, lot 50; (6) sixteen and a half acres of upland beyond the further plain, lot 19; (7) sixty acres of upland being a great Divident in the fourth division, lot 26; (8) a farm of 152 acres of upland in the third division. In the second inventory taken in 1644 the 152 acre farm had been disposed of, but John had been granted: (9) one acre and a half of meadow in Wards Meadow bounded by Thomas Arnold; (10) one acre and a half of meadow near the little plain adjoining to John Eddy; (11) two acres of marsh bounded southeast with the river and the west by the backlane.
John Warren's will was dated Nov. 30 and proved Dec. 17, 1667. In it he gave his daughter Elizabeth a book titled "the playnes man pathway to heaven". He also mentioned his sons Daniel and John, daughter-in-law Mary Warren, wife of Daniel, daughter Mary Bigelow, Elizabeth Knap, wife of James Knap, grand children Daniel Warren, Mary Bigelow, and Michall Bloyce, daughter of Richard Bloyce. The will was witnessed by Joseph Taynter and John Randall. Inventory of the estate was taken Dec. 16, 1667 by John Coolidge, Henry Bright, and Henry Freeman and amounted to £167 4s. 0d.
I found two or three separate web sites giving the contents of the NEHGR article based on wills, tracing teh ancestry of John Warren. One is Sam Behling, http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~sam/warwills2.html
