"With both Glemsford and Hartest thick with Frosts, and with two brothers, each named John and each having children baptized at Glemsford over roughly the same period, sorting out lines was-- ... difficult... here-- ... Nonetheless, by correlating names and dates, we have been able to sort out the children of these two JOhns, except for a John baptized on 22 April 1561 (Johannes filis Johannis Frost bapt fuit".

To give the reader an opportunity to judge how correct this sorting out is, I ahve provided pertinetn extracts from teh original Latin entries in teh parish registers, in the lists of children for both John's.

To this material should be added this quotation fro m the will of an unplaced Elizabeth Frost of Glemsford, widow, dated 5 Jan 1558/9 and proved on 30 June 1559. In it she names her sons Thomas, Edward, and Benjamin and wills "that all my goods before bequethed be equalie divided by the discretion of my two brothers [in law?] olde John and yonge John". What became of olde John does not appear, nor do we find evidence to decide which of them was the John Frost named int eh 1568 subsidy list of Glemsford when he was taxed 4s. 2d. on "65 in goodes". (Suffolk Green Books No. XII p. 17.)

Citation to TAG 61: 165. Edward and Thomasone were the parents of the immigrants Elizabeth Frost who m Henry Rice and Philemon Whale, later of Sudbury MA; Thomasie Frost m Edmund Rice, and Alice Frost m Thomas Blower, and had descendants in New England (TAG 52:65).

General Notes for Child Thomazine FROST

There has been alot of confusion about Thomazine's last name, parentage, and ancestry. That she was Thomazine Frost is proven by the marriage record at BurySt Mary's. That she was the daughter of Edward Frost and Thomaszine Belgrave, and ancestry of both of those individuals, is completely proven, largely through a string of wills that connect the individual members of the families involved.

THere were two Frost familes of Hartest and Glemsford, Suffolk, England. One was John Frost, a clergyman silenced by Archbishop Laud in early 1600's, had atleast two children, Edmund, b 1593 at Hartest, and m Thomasine at Hartest, m 3 to Reana, and John Frost. This marriage is often confused with that of Thomasine Frost's parents, Edward Frost and Thomasine Belgrave.

Edmund was a preaching elder and also silenced for ihs views, and foced to leave England; he migrated to CAmbrdge, MA, with first wife and son John, one of founders of First Congregational Church at Cambridge and an elder. ANd his wife died at Sudbury, 1653.Children John, Thomas, Samuel, Joseph, Deacon James, Mary, Ephrai, Thomas.

Meanwhile back in Glemsford and Hartest, William Frost of Glemsford, d 1549, m Philippa, had Roger, John the older or middle and John the younger, Henry. Roger had William, bp 1558, John, bp 1562, Henry, pg 1574, Edward, bp 1576, Henry bp 1579.

John Frost the elder of Glemsford had Wlliam b 1555, Edmund b 1564, John b 1564, Willliam b 1568, Henry b 1572, among others.

John Frost the younger of Glemsford m AnnScott, had Edwrd m Thomasine Belgrave, John b 1609? Henry bp 1568, and this family were clothiers.

Both families were quite prosperous, and I doubt whether they weren't related.

Despite the fact that Edmund served at least five times in the General Court in Boston there is no direct evidence that he was friendly or hob-nobbed with the colony's leaders. But there is indirect evidence that John Winthrop was aware of him other than as a member of the legislature. Edmund Rice married Thomasine Frost and Thomas Blower married her sister, Alice Frost.
Blower arrived in Massachusetts in 1635 but died shortly after 1639. In 1640, Nathan Lufkin of Hitcham, Suffolk, England wrote to John Winthrop in Boston that Thomas Blower owed him 24 pounds and that Edmund Rice knew about it. By this time Alice Blower had already remarried. The tone of the letter suggests that Lufkin and Winthrop were well acquainted and that Lufkin and Edmund were also. Hitcham, Stanstead, and Groton, Winthrop's old home, form a triangle about 8 or 9 miles on a side in the southwestern portion of Suffolk County. This was in the Stour River Valley that had been a major center of Puritanism for at least a generation before.
In fact the extended families of the three Frost sisters, Elizabeth (who married Henry Rice), Alice and Thomasine, were at the center of one of the largest networks of interrelated Puritans who immigrated to the Massachusetts Bay Colony. These might be important underlying facts that allowed Edmund Rice's native abilities to blossom. -Bob Rice

Stanstead parish register (TAG), as Edmund. Also listed on the Berkhamstead parish register as Edward. Apparently only one child. Edmund and Edward were interchangeable names. However Edward is often confused with a nonexistent Edmund who did not marry.

Lived at Sudbury, moved to Marlboro 1664, deacon of church there.
All chldren but eldest, whose birth not found, by Anna. Tw o yungest recorded Marlboro, others at Sudbury. He got half of his father's land in Sudbury.
