General Notes (Husband)
This agrees with info in Morse genealogy. He came to MA at a later period than his parents. Settled in Watertown in 1635. His name is 28th on a Covenant of 1636; in August, 1636, a home was assigned himm in Dedham, in the part of it that is now Medfield.
Later he purchased 800 acres of land in Bogestow, the petition for that town didn't succeed; eventually the town of Sherborn was founded there. With his sons, he was "by far the greatest landholder" and they held one third of the new subscriptions. He was "evidently a man of large possessions and a leader in civic affairs."
He was leader among the proprietors of Sherborn, first selectman, chosen one of a commission for treating with the Natick INdians for 4000 acres of land in what is now Ashand and Hopkins, MA, for an equal quqanit y in what now constiutes the northwest and central parts of Sherborn. The town agreed to pa 300 bushels of corn, and Daniel Morse paid 3/4 of this. "In all public meetings, precedence was yielded to him." Will probated 6/13/1688. (Early Planters of Sherborn, Holliston and Medway).
Robert Charles Anderson's article on Samuel Morse, Great Migration Immigrant, New England Ancestors, Summer 2007, does not give a last name for his wife Lydia, doesn't discuss why not, and gives only local vital records as sources. Morse Genealogy said his wife was Lydia Fisher. Anderson shows that there was no record of the marriage. Morse Memorial and Fisher Genealogy also say Lydia married Daniel Morse. There is confusion about which Anthony Fisher was her father; she was the daughter of Anthony Jr., son of Anthony Sr. and Mary Fiske.
The Fisher Genealogy says:
"The inventory of [Anthony Fisher Jr's] estate, showing only personal property in Dedham and Dorchester, was presented by Ensign Daniel Fisher, July 26, 1671, and an agreement for the distribution was made as follows: "July 26, 1672, We whose names are hereto written being he sons and ye daughters of our late deceased father Anthony Fisher, sometimes called 'of Dorchester', deceased,', etc., and signed by Daniel, Nathaniel, and Cornelius Fisher, Daniel Morse, and Joanna Fisher".
Daniel Morse seems to have signed for his wife, who was living at the time.
The estimated year of birth of son Daniel places him in a five year gap between two other children baptized at Redgrave. A microfilm of the original parish register for REdgrave was examined to try to find Daniel. No such record was found. However, the register is hard to read for some portions of the period of time between 1608 and 1613. Another baptism for this family was found, however, for a son Samuel bapt 1 May 1603, one year after the marriage of the immigrnat and two years before teh baptism of the next child (I think leading to including a son Samuel in the family who is not listed elsewhere).

The Fisher Fallacies
The genealogy of Anthony Fisher and his descendants is a good case study of the way in which information can be misinterpreted, incorrectly copied and even creatively embellished to produce a plethora of contradictory, inaccurate and confusing versions of the same basic facts.
Anthony Fisher was one of the earliest settlers in North America, and as a result, many Americans can trace their family tree back to him. The rapid growth in the use of personal computers and the web as tools for genealogical research has enabled many hundreds of Fisher descendants to trace their lineage back to Anthony Fisher.
Unfortunately, many of the most commonly-used sources of genealogical data contain information that is inconsistent, ambiguous or just plain wrong. Some common errors include
Misunderstanding the geography of England, so that towns and villages are placed in counties hundreds of miles from their true locations, and county names are confused with the names of towns.
Attempting to "correct" dates taken from original records prior to September 1752, in an effort to force them to fit the modern calendar. This often leads to several versions of the baptismal record for the same individual, with dates that differ by 11 days or 22 days or a single year or a year plus 11 days.
Confusion between two people of the same name living in the same (or a neighbouring) village. These are often cousins who were named after a shared grandparent, or given a name that was popular within that family.
Confusion caused by different spellings of the same name, which was very common even as late as the early 19th century.
Assuming that a connection exists between two people, when there is no documentary evidence to support it. This sometimes happens when a researcher wishes to establish a link to a notable person.
At Obliquity, we are fortunate to have direct access to the English county record offices which house the primary sources of genealogical information for that period: the parish records of births, marriages and deaths.
Our information on the Fisher family is taken from these primary sources and is as accurate as we can make it, taking into account the difficulties of translating the fading and often illegible handwriting in centuries-old parish record books.

The People
Agnes Fisher
She is often omitted from the Fisher genealogy but she does appear in the baptismal and burial records of Stradbroke as a sister of Anthony Fisher I.
Alice versus Mary Bockenham/Buckenham/Buckingham
What was the name of Anthony Fisher II's wife? Mary is usually quoted, apparently based on church records in Massachusetts. However, her name appears as Alice in the baptismal records of her last two children, Nathaniel and Cornelius. Perhaps the surname of Buckenham (in various spellings) has been confused with the married name of her sister-in-law, Martha Buckenham nee Fisher.
Which Anthony Fisher?
Occasionally there is confusion over whose children are whose. The families of Anthony Fisher I and his son Anthony Fisher II are sometimes lumped together in one large family
.
Hester Fisher
She is often omitted from the Fisher genealogy but she does appear in the burial records of Syleham as a daughter of Anthony Fisher I.
The "twins" Joshua and Mary Fisher
Joshua Fisher and his sister Mary were baptised two years apart in two different parishes. If they had been twins, it is much more likely that they would have been baptised together.
Leah Fisher
She is often omitted from the Fisher genealogy but she does appear in the baptismal records of Syleham as a daughter of Anthony Fisher II.
Lord of the Manor of Syleham
Some sources give one of the Anthony Fishers as "Lord of the Manor of Syleham." There were, in fact, three manors associated with Syleham. The Manor of Syleham Comitis has existed since Saxon times and the Manor of Esham dates back to at least 1285. The third manor, which no longer exists, was variously called the Manor of Syleham, Monk's Hall, Tylney's Hall, or Syleham Hall. Monk's Hall is now a private home and we were very privileged to be invited inside by the owners when we visited Syleham in early 1997. There is absolutely no evidence, however, that Anthony Fisher or any other member of the Fisher family was lord of any of these manors. Is this an example of delusions of grandeur by an ever-hopeful descendent?
Various spellings
Bridges versus Brigges versus Briggs.
Bockenham versus Buckenham versus Buckingham.
Marie versus Mary.
The Places
Custrichhall, Weeley, Essex
This location (in various spellings) often appears as the birth or baptismal place of various members of the Fisher clan, all because Amos Fisher lived here after his marriage in 1633.
East Bergholt, Suffolk
The same problem arises with East Bergholt. Cornelius Fisher, the brother of the aforesaid Amos, worked as a clerk (clergyman) here until his death in 1641.
Syleham, Weymouth, Suffolk
Syleham, Suffolk, Kent
Weymouth, Suffolk
These particular combinations of place names are often found in various sources on the web and elsewhere. Here is a small lesson in English geography:
Syleham is a village in Suffolk.
Suffolk is a county in the east of England.
Weymouth is a town in Dorset.
Dorset is a county in the southwest of England.
Kent is a county in the southeast of England.
The proper combination is Syleham, Suffolk, England. Perhaps Weymouth has been confused with the East Anglian port town of Yarmouth (now called Great Yarmouth) from which it is thought that Anthony Fisher II departed England. Where Kent comes in is anybody's guess.
Pre-1637 events in Massachusetts
The Anthony Fisher II family did not arrive in America until 1637 so none of the children (John, Daniel, Lydia, Leah, Anthony, Nathaniel, Cornelius) could have been born there.
Various spellings
Custrichhall versus Custrich Hall versus Custridge Hall.
Weeley versus Wesley.
I have three Barber/ Barbour families, clearly related, clearly a fascinating tale.
Richard Barber, b 1565 Stradbroke, Suffolk, England
i
E. Barber b 1597 m Henry Brock
i
i
Mary m 1639, Stradbroke, Henry Phillips
i
i
Elizabeth m Robert Gowing
i
i
Priscilla m William Robbins, descendant married into the Morse line down the line.
Nicholas Barbor b bef 1566, Laxfield area, Suffolk, England
m Sibilla Gold, persecuted for Protestantism, remarried
Robert Fiske, persecuted for Protestantism.
Sibilla's sister Isabel Gold, also persecuted for Protestantism, married someone named Phillips.
Sibilla Gold and Robert Fiske had Anthony Fisher., of Laxfield, Suffolk, who went to Dedham, Massachusetts; a daughther married Daniel Morse, from Dedham, Suffolk, England, to Dedham, Massachusetts.
George Barbour, born to Thomas Barbour on 28 Dec 1613 in Fressingham, Suffolk, went to Dedham Massachusetts, married first Elizabeth Clark, a daughter married Jonathan Morse, son of Daniel Morse above from Suffolk to Dedham Massachusetts. George Barbour married second JOanna Faxon, who was previously married to Anthony Fisher, son of Anthony Fisher above.
All of these people were founders of Dedham Massachusetts, even though only some of them are known to have travelled to Massachusetts and clearly they arrived there on separate UFO's (that on occasion actually disembarked in WAtertown); and noone has noticed that they knew each other well in England, nor has anyone noticed that history of religious persecution ties some of them together.

General Notes (Husband)
Assumed to be the father of William Fisher who married margerie Bert. Oen can argue that Robert, father of William, was son of William (John) because the will of John entails Chickerign Hall to eldest son William and then to William's eldest son, John, and if John should die without surviving male issue, to "his next brother Robert." Both William's brother Robert and his son Robert were second sons, with reason to settle elsewhere. Since William married in 1551, one certainty is that his father, Robert, must have been old enough to have had a son of marriageable age at that date. Since John, eldest son of William, was under age in 522/3 when the will was written, Robert could have been born as early as about 1505, and thus father of a man who married in 1551. The chrnology in the latter case is tight, however, and we believe that it was John Fisher's son, rather than his grandson, who was father of William Fisher. Moreover, a Robert fisher born ca 1505 would not have been the man of that name on the 1524 Subsidy list. (1997 NEHGR)
Robert Fisher settled in Syleham (cum Essham) where hsi name appears in the 1524 Sbusidy of Suffolk. In January 1547/8 he witnessed the will of Thomas Fulcher of the neighboring parish of Ferssingfield.
A Syleham deed has information about Robert and his son, William. The document is a lease, made 15 January 6 Elizabeth I (1563/4) between Emery Tyleney of Weybread esquire, lord of the manor of Monks Hall in Syleham, on the one hand, and William Fisher of Stradbroke, yeoman, on the other:
Witnesseth, that where the said William Fysher hath the day of the making hereof and holdeth to hi and to his heirs of the said Emery as of the said manor of Monks hall by copy of court roll, according to the custom of the said manor, one acre and half of land lying in Wygnotts Croft in Syleham aforesaid between the way leading to the church of Syleham aforesaid on the north part and the tenement and croft called Wygnotts on teh south part, and one acre of meadow be it more or less lying next the Town meadow otherwise called Tunmnan meadow in Syleham aforesaid between the meadow of the said manor on teh east part adn the meadow late John Carter on the west part, two acres and half of meadow be it more or less in Syleham aforesaid lying in West meadow one pightle called Pyggis pightle otherwise Pogs pihtell in Syleham aforesaid containing by estimation one acre bit it more or less, one piece of meadow in Syleham aforesaid containing by estimation half an acre an dfourteen perches be it more or less, and one piece of meadow in Syleham aforesaid called Small doole containing by estimation half a rood be it more or less, which said premises late were in the tenure of one Robert Fisher Father of the said Wiliam Fisher, deceased.
Mr. Tylney leased, for the sum of 9 po9nds 3 s 4d, the abovesaid lands for one thousand years to Willaiim Fisher, for the yearly rent of 6 1/2 d. Various conidtions of the lease are inculded in teh document.
No probate record has been found for Robert. He was alive when named in the January 1547/8 Fulcher will. The above deed shows that he died before January 1563/4.
Known and possibel children of Robert Fisher, born probably at Syleham. Possibly Margaret adn Robert.
General Notes for Child William FISHER
As revealed by the contents of his 1591 will, William was among the privileged few of his contemporaries to learn to read adn write. also, he had armor, indicating military activity. This service was probably of a local nature, and his armor was most likely made of leather. Or perhaps he inherited the armor, which might have been rather elaborate.
William Fisher prospered as a yeoman farmer, retaining property in Syleham that he had inherited. Exctly when he adn Margerie resided during their early marriage is unknown, though liekly within the parish of Stradbroke. The parish churches of Syleham and Stradbroke aer about three miles apart, but the boundaries of the two parishes are much closer, the in-between being a walk of gentle ups adn downs across aprt of teh parish of Wingfield. Perhaps the Fisher home was near the boundary of one of the parishes. William and Margerie took some of their children to each church for baptism; Stradbroke in 1553, Syleham in 1556, and then Stradbroke again in 1559 (apparently with twins) and 1560. One little girl, almost four years of age, was buried in the Stradbroke churchyard in 1563.
As time passed, William purchased (according to his will) properties in Cransford, nine miles southeast of Stradbroke, and in Swefling, two and a half miles beyond Cransford. Whether or not he and Margerie lived for a period in either of these places is unknown. Eventually theymoved to the parish of St. James South Elmham, seven miles northeast from Stradbroke, still in county Sfufolk.
In St. James South Elmham, William wrote his own last will and tesament, "scripte by me Will'm Fisher", 14 June 1591. He died less than two months later, as the will was probated 9 August 1591. Because the surviving parish registers of St. James South Elmham start many years after Wiliam and Margerie died, it is impossible to find records of their burials.
William's will indicates that within the yeoman class of English citizens he was probably more akin to a gentleman than to a husbandman. He named no horses or cows or sheep or sheat or barley, the items so commonly counted as a portion of wealth by yeomen. In his will, though, he did name "implements." Perhaps animals to work or graze his land were owned by the men to whom he rented the several estates he held.
In his will William provided his "welbeloved wiffe" Margerie, for life, "all my free holde landes and Ten'tes, and indenture or lease lande lyinge and beinge in Sarlehame (Syleham)", without naming them. (One of them, Wignott(s), was bequeathed in 1638 by William's grandson, Cornelius Fisher (pv, p 173). William directed that after his wife's decease these properties should go to their son Anthony. In addition, Anthony was to receive "all suche movable goods as are in his custodie adn possession excepte one posted bedstede wch I boughte at Witchingham hall one fetherbedde and one coveringe wch fetherbedde posted bedsteade and coveringe I give unto Margery my wiffe. Also, "the rest of the Evidence concerninge the landes before devised to Anthonye my sonne I will that they shoulde be delyvered to him" (referring probably to the Syleham lands, mentioned earlier in the will.)
Son William was to inherit the lands in Swefling and Cransford, and each year he was to pay to "Margerie his mother" an annuity of 6 opunds. The testator William also bequeathed to his son Wiliam "all suche stuffe of howsholde as I have remayninge in his custodie and possession and all my Armor bookes and suche Evidence as I have concernynge the landes before devised to him."
Another genealogically significant item in William's will is his bequest to "Anne Forder my sister" of 40s. "Rose Forder her daughter" was to receive 26s 8d at her day of marriage.
William gave token legacies to his grandchildren as well, naming them as "my dawghter Johannes thre sonnes... and... their sister," "my sonne Will'm Fishers dawghter," "my sonne Anthonye Fishers two sonnes... and .. their sister," and "my dawghter Janes sonne.. and ... his sister... and ... the childe or children that my saide dawghter Jane is now bigge w all (if) god give her saffe delyverie." In another part of the will William named Jane's son: "Cornelius the sonne of Francys Wolnaughe".
After devising his properties, William gave to "Margerie my wiffe all the residue of my moveable goods lynnyage (linenage) plate implements and stuffe of howsholde" and appointed her and their son William as executors.
