Notes on Burkharts of Berks County and Pennsylvania

Herbrechtingen and Jacob the weaver Burkharts

This family is linked by both Jerry Burket, from whom most of the following info comes, and Sharon Martin, to both Troy's Andreas son of Georg family, and Jacob Burkhart the weaver of Reading. I haven't seen or heard any evidence that Troy's family (from Georg Burkhart of Cumru) is Georg born 1703 in Herbrechtingen. Two sources are Bess Burkett Hill's The Burkhardt-Burkett family in America: a history of the ancestors of Johann Jacob Burkhardt, which apparently is an unpublished or semi-published manuscript, someone sent me a Adobe version ofit, and Ellis, Nina Detter, Burket/Burkett/ Burkhardt family tales and trails, 1649-1990, Bountiful, Utah: Family History Publications. See Jerry Burkhart's page Roberta Wunder's site on the descemdants of Johann Jacob of Herbrechtingen. Bud Coplen's "The Descendents of Jorg Burckhardt and Appolonia Meyer" page "Descendants of JOhann Jacob Burkhardt", looks like most likely from Bud Coplen's page but cannot identify source. Johann Georg Burckhardt b 10/14/1703 Troy Burkhart says Sharon Martin told him that this was Georg the father of Andreas Sr, Georg, Sebastian and Catherine of Berks Co, and I think Jerry Burkitt had such an idea, too. From checking all the above sources, I can't find any substantiation for this idea, and Sharon Martin has been too busy travelling around the globe since last November to tell me where she got it! I asked Jerry Burkett - who can't seem to focus on it. Anna Marie Burckhardt b 7/13/1705 d 1706 Andreas "Andrew" Burckhardt III b 12/12/1706 Johannes Burckhardt b 9/17/1708 father of Johan Dedric who came to PA and gave rise to a line of Burkett's. Further, he has Johan Jacob Burckhardt, Johannes Burckhardt and Johan Georg in a row as if all of them out of this family somehow matter - but he doesn't explain it. He seems to say and I think he said outright at some point that Johan Georg was Georg of Berks Co father of Andreas, etc. of Troy's line. Johannes Burckhardt b 9/17/1708 m Katrina Herbert. Both died in Germany. Confusion over whether they ever came to US and then returned to Germany. Ellis has Katharine Herbert or Hebert, a French maiden, desc from Huguenots. (doesn't say how we know this. ) Johannes Dedric came first to New WOrld in 1741, then Katrina and Johannes Burket arrived 27 yrs later on 6 Oct 1767, on the Hamilton, from Rotterdam to Philadelphia. JOhannes Burcket signed the ship's roster. Ellis says Polly Kountz, Koontz, Coontz, kunz was the daughter of Jacob Kountz, of Prussian ancestry. A talented musician and skilled pianist. At the time the piano was a new instrument and only affluent families could afford one. "She was a delicate lady bred to the aristocracy of Europe". "Family tradition reports Polly (Kountz) Burket to be of noble descent with deep familial roots in Prussia. Delicate and of artistic nature, she was accustomed to more refined living than was to be found in the New World. (though it isn't clear they ever left Philadelphia) Polly did not adapt to the hardships offered in America. In later years, she persuaded Johan to return with her to their honeland. They had a son, Johan Dedric. . Johan Dedric m b unknown, m Polly Koonz. An accomplished pianist. Brought some trappings of her life in Europe such as nice china to Philadelphia. She couldn't adjust to life in the new world and they returned to Germany and died there. They had fled in early 1700's to Amsterdam, Holland. Their son, Jacob Burkhart, born there while awaiting emigration to America. Arrived on Loyal Judith, 1741. Settled in Philadelphia. Not known if they ever left Philadelphia before they returned to Germany, where they died. . Jacob b around 1740-1, Amsterdam, Holland m Barbara Fisher, daughter of William Fisher IV and Sarah Coleman.. William was mayor of Philadelphia in 1773, and they were the grandparents of Samuel Rhodes Fisher, who was founder of Austin Colony and Texas statesman. Ellis lists nine more children born to Polly and JOhan Dedrick Burkhart. Jacob the eldest son married Barbara Fisher, Quaker and daughter of a mayor of Philadelphia, and descendants were founders of Texas. Ellis's book traces Johannes' descendants (Johan Dedric's), who took the name Burkett. Johann "John" Jacob Burckhardt b 10/9/1712 Herbrechtingen, Germany d 4/21/1794, Reading, Berks, PA, He was orphaned at age 10 and probably raised by his grandfather Schneider in Flenheim and trained there to be a weaver. m 10/1751 Switzerland Sabina Dorthea Naegeli b 12/28/1721 Switzerland d 1/1/1796. Jacob Burkhart Sr was a master weaver, and was in Reading by 1762, when he is on a tax list. His will indicates this Jacob was married to a Sabina Dorothea. I need to see the proof that he is this individual in this family, also any immediate relatives b ca 1780 named Phillip. Phillip married the daughter of a man listed immediately before Jacob Burkhart on the 1790 census. There is considerable confusion about Jacob Sr's childrne. One version has he had just one son who lived, John Jacob b in Switzerland, and he in turn had Jacob Jr of the trio in Reading. Another is that Jacob Sr had two sons; John Jacob, and Jacob. Yet another is John GEORGE was the only surviving son of Jacob Sr, married the Fox woman, everything. Roberta Wunder's version 1. John George Burkhart b Aug 21, 1753 Canton of Berne, Switzerland. d Jan 2, 1847, Hessville, Sandusky Co, OHio m Jan 1776, Trin Luth Ch, Reading, Mary Barbara Fox. She b 5/28/1758 Reading d there abt Aug 19 1791. He m Catharine Fox 11/11/1792 Trin Luth Ch, Reading, she b 10/1/1773 Reading d 6/16/1862 Sandusky Co Ohio. They moved after 1796 when Sabina Dorothea died, to Lancaster Co, PA, then to Ohio. John Burkhart whichever son he really was was a personal body guard to Gen. George Washington and the family still has the sword he carried. By both wives, he had 17 children. Margaret Catharine Burkhartdt b 9/13/1759 Trin Luth Ch Reading, PA. d unknown. bapt 1755 Trin Luth Ch; records inconsistent John Burkhardt b 8/11/1756 d 1756 JOhn Jacob Burkhardt b 5/8/1758 Reading, Berks Co PA d unknown 2. Jerry Burkett's version: John b 21 Aug 1753. This I believe is the son mentioned in his will Margaret Catherine Burckhardt d infancy 1755 John George Burckhardt d in infancy buried 1756 John Jacob Burckhardt, Jr buried 1758. This is Bud Coplen's version, too. But the 1790 census shows Jacob Burckhardt Jr closely associated with (living with or next to) both Jacob Burkhart, sr, and John Burkhart, indicating he had a son Jacob who lived. They wouldn't have likelyt bee called Jr and Sr if not father and son. John Burckhardt, Sr b 8/21/1753 Canton Basel, Switzerland d 1/2/1847, Reading? m (1) 1/30/1776 Mary Barbara Fox, b 5/28/1758 Reading PA, dau David Fox, Jr and Catherine Geiss) d 8/19/1791 m (2) 11/11/1792 Catherine Fox, her sister, b 10/1/1773 ?Reading, PA d 6/16/1862. 4. Bessie Burkett Hill's version. John b 8/21/1753 in Canton Basel, Switzerland, which was just over the Rhine River from Wurtemburg. The family arrived in Philadelphia 10/1/1754. Jacob is on first list of taxables in Reading, 1759, master weaver. Margaret Catherina b 1755 Reading, died infancy John George b 1757 Reading died as infant John Jacob bapt 1758. Altogether 3 sons and 4 daughters. Jacob Sr alone was taxed in 1767 and 1768. In 1779 both Jacob Jr and John are listed as partners in business and taxed accordingly through 1785. Notice that if "John" or "Jacob" or whoever he was was born in 1753, his son could not have been grown in time to pay taxes in 1779. She cinches it by quoting John Jacob Sr's grave inscription. "John Jacob Burkhart b October 9, 1712. father was Andrew Burkhardt, master mason of Wurtemburg, Germany. His mother was ___(can't read my writing) Schneider. married to Sabina Dorothea Negeli for 42 years and 6 (I think) months. Seven children - 3 sons and 4 daughters. Two sons and one daughter still living and married. died April 12 1794 aged 81 years 6 months 2 days." I can't seem to find where anyone has what happened to John Jacob and any children; most have him died unknown. Hill follows the descendants of John, and the Fox sisters and their umpteen children - most or all took the name Burkett. Jacob Burkett John Burkett, Jr Samuel Burkett David Burkett b 1782 George Burkett 15 other Burkett's. Jerry Burkett says that Samuel was a Quaker and walked to, Jefferson County, from Bedford County, to start a new home. Also, that the family were in Bedford Co in the 1790 census. Johan Dedric was said tohave lived in Lancaster Co in Brecknock or Caernarvon TWP.
