Information in here started out as being from Mark Dehart's
web page
unless otherwise noted. I started with Mark Dehart's
stuff, and fit the rest that I have found into it.
I really had to re-format his stuff; sI couldn't
follow it well enough to fit other families into it
in the web style format he uses; each individual has
his or her own family page, and you hve to follow
each individual's links! Since I found sustantially
more information in other sources, including the
original GMNJ article that was one of his main
sources, I am leaving it all inst of just presenting
my own line.
I also have some supplemental information from
the IGI and a little, mostly on Uriah Dehart's family,
from an updated version of the NJGM article Mark Dehart
cites. Mark Dehart's stuff is all
very carefully evaluated and footnoted, so people who
value that kind of research will want to look directly
at his stuff, which I have a link to at the end of this.
Mark Dehart cites two sources; G.C. Jenkins, Appalachian Pioneers
(or Information from Appalachian Pioneers, I'm not sure which)
"The Dehart Family" in Genealogical Mag of New Jersey 40(1),
Jan 1965.
The first part of this looks likely to be speculation in an
attempt to tie our family to the Manhattan Dehart family.
Somoene posted this suspicion to the Dehart list - and I was
darned if I could find it again.
It seems that Aert Simonz is the first known member of our
line - and his name suggests that he was the son of someone
named Simon.
William DeHart b abt 1550 Brest of Hart, France (Is more known
about the family?) This from Debra Clear, "based on family
legend". Family forced to flee to Holland to avoid
religious persecution.

Imm to New Amsterdam 1664, age 21. Arrived with
ample means, bought 300 acres in Brooklyn and
two negro slaves, built a stone house that stood
for two centuries. The farm was one of the
largest in Brooklyn.
Following is a picture of it - not stone. Maybe
a later, earlier or second house.

See a story people wrote about a visit to the Dehart home.
Symon himself never used Dehart surname, and
it isn't found in records at Nieukoop. He
plainly used old style, Symon son of Aert.
All church and civil records in the New World
identify the family as DeHart,T'hart, TerHart,
Van der Hart, ____Hardt or ____Haert, and
further variations.
Simon was one of Brooklyn's trustees or overssers
from 1680-3. n 1687 he took oath of allegiance to
English monarchy. In 1688 appointed to the office
of city commissioner. He was involved in an act
of rebellion on Sept 14, 1697; "when several prominent
Dutchmen, amog them Simon Aertsen, 'met, armed, at the
courthouse of Kings, where they destroyed and defaced
the King's arms which were hanging up there.'"
