Philip Burkhart of Alsace township married at Schwarzwald or the Reformed church in Reading, on July 23, 1804, Barbara Wagner, listed as of Alsace. Barbara Wagner was b and d , and her death certificate says she was the daughter of Henry and Elizabeth WAgner. This is what I so far know or suspect about them. Elias Wagner, most likely the father of Henry and Johannes Wagner but possibly their uncle, died in Exeter. Administration was granted solely to wife Margaret in 1755. But on 1754 tax list, only "Widow Wagoner" lived in Exeter. Their land is described to me as in "Exeter Zone" in 1750 property tax map - at the far southwetern corner near the border of what became Cumru, Alsace and Exeter townships. They got there after 1725. In 1775, Abraham Levan owned the land that had been Elias's, and also the land that had been Heinrich Werner's, and the land that had been Isaac Levan's. His neighbors were Heinrich Werner (Vernon), Isaac Levan (Levant), James Lewis of Cumru, Daniel Messerchmidt (Messersmith), James Lebo, and Johannes Bishop. John Bishop may have married Barbara Keim the daughter of Hans Nickel Keim and Barbara Schneider. Since in 1876 map of Exeter township shows that Elias Wagner of that time owned land in th e "Hill District" of northern Exeter, near borders of Cumru and Alsace, I wonder if the family owned the same land all along but something like possibly remarriage of widow Wagner disguised its ownership. She would have had to marry a Levan. Johannes WAgner, b 1751, m Susannah Liesz, as per below, in 1769, Reading, both of Exeter. Died 1831 in Cumru, where he lived, leaving a will/ probate. He served in the Revolutinary War and may have been locally prominent, if noone knows who he was. Someone wrote me of a document that traces ancestors of him and some Werners's; Werner was the name of some immedate neighbors of Elias, above. He and Henrich exchanged sponsorship of each other's children as per below. Henrich Wagner, b estimated around 1740. "Of Exeter" when he married Dec 14, 1769, Sphia Seiwertin of Maxatawny. She apparntly died. He remarried on Apr 2, 1771, to Elizabeth Gottschall the widow of Johan Nicholas. Johannes (Hans) Neues, possibly a relation, bought large parcels of land in Frederick and Northern Liberties Townships, what became Montgomery County on the border of Berks, beginning Oct 26, 1720, and he sold some of it in 1722, to George Philip Dodderer of Faulkner's Swamp, also in Montgomery County but often associated with Berks County and its settlers. Berks County created 1752, from Philadelphia, Chester and Lancaster Counties, and Montgomery created in 1780's from Philadelphia Co. In 1734, Johannes Neus is listed on the tax list for Frederick Township. The name became Nuss, Neyes, Nees, and every way of spelling those. Nuss means "Nut" in German. Not possible to distinguish yet if these people were NEES (Swedish), NEUES or NIESS (French) or Neuss/ Nuss (German). Jacob Meck (Meek) married Margareta Nies from Oley in 1788. Johan Jacob Nuss, d 1757, m Anna Maria Reiher, records at Goshenhoppen Church, in Hanover Township. Had: Anna Maria Nuss b Jan 2, 1740, m Dec 7, 1856, Elias Schneider, of Oley or Exeter. Maria Elizabeth Nuss, b Nov 27, 1741, m Sep 12, 1758, Johan Nicholas Gottschall, son of Christopher Gottschall, who was born in Germany and christened in 1740, brought to PA in 1741, naturalized in Alsace in 1761 or 1762, and lived in Reading. Marriage performed at Goshenhoppen Church by Rev. Krug of Reading, who incidetnally was so interested in the Gottschall's that he wrote a book about them. Nicholas Gottschall died, and his widow, Elizabeth, was granted administration of his estate, in Reading, on July 23, 1770. Then Elizabeth the widow of Johan Nicholas Gottschall, married Henrich Wagner, in Reading, records of Rev. Krug I think, or Reading Reformed, on Apr 2, 1771. Anna Margaretha Nuss b Oct 15, 1746, m Mar 31, 1766, records of Rev. Krug, at Goshenhoppen Church, Benjamin Leinbach. She is believed to have later married Nicholas Gottschall, who instead of dying went to Ohio, but that was a different Nicholas Gottschall who married a Margaret, had children in Berks County, and died in Berks County leaving a will, while apparently a Nicholas Gottschall and wife Margaret of Washington County, PA, went to Ohio and left a will and other documents of their own. No evidence of who Margaret who married the second (there were a total of three of them in Berks County) Nicholas Gottschall was. Someone else is getting the probate files of the three Nicholas Gottschall's and also of Christopher / Christofel Gottschall, so no need to get them. I expect Nicholas Gottschall's probate folder to confirm that Henry Wagner and wife Elziabeth lived on Nicholas Gottschall's property, which would have been in probate for ten to twenty one years, under sole control of the widow, unless she had no children, and if not, then probalby she flat out inherited the property and/ or its wealth, of which it looks likely Nicholas had a fair amount since he lived in Reading and owned land in Alsace. Johann Conrad Nuss, b Mar 17, 1744, m Aug 22, 1769, Maria Margaretha Roeder. Anna Catherine Nuss b Jan 14 1750 no marriage record. Johann Jacob Nuss b Mar 15, 1753, m Feb 23 1779, Anna Maria Roder. The only Henry Wagner in the 1790, 1800 census, lived in Reading. In 1790, he is tantalizingly listed next to the names of Jacob Burkhart Sr, John Burkhart and Jacob Burkhart Jr of Reading, weavers, who had no sons named Philip. IN 1816, a Henry Wagner died in Reading. I got his will. He left all of his estate to a single widowed sister, Mary Lehman, as if he had no other living relatives. My Henry seems to have had lots of immediate family all over the place in Berks Co, certainly Barbara the wife of Philip Burkhart was living in Alsace! Two other Wagners, Rosina and Susannah, married at Schwarzwald church in the 1790's and were listed as of Alsace. Rosina Wagner of Alsace m 1794, in Reading, I didn't get who she married. Susanna Wagner of Alsace m 8/12/1798 Jacob Schwenck. These were probably sisters of Barbara - and that becomes more likely given that the name Eva Rosina ran in the family of Elizabeth Wagner's parents or grandparents (see below). Christening records indicate that Henry Wagner was closely related to a Johannes Wagner who married Susannah, and to the Ritter and Jung and possibly Schneider families. Henry and Elizabeth Wagner and Johannes and Susanne Wagner sponsored each other's children. It also appears that he may have come to live near Reading, possibly in Alsace, around 1789. I can't find records of his other childrens' births! The 1790 census has just one Henry Wagner, in Reading, and a Henry Wagner died there in 1816 and left a will, naming only a widowed sister as if he had no other relations on earth, which of course my Henry Wagner did. Otherwise, no Henry Wagner owned land, seemingly, in Berks County. Possible his name was spelled more than one way; Wagener, Waggener, Waggoner. Wagoner. His first name was often written Henrich or Heinrich, and his call name and first name more than likely were not the same. Young lists his parents as John Young and Mary Shadler. I believe that Mary is the daughter of George Schaedler and that she died shortly after her son George was born. By 1850 John is remarried to Harriet. The 1840 Maidencreek census data shows John Young (b. 1770/1780), male (b. 1810/1820, John?), male (b. 1835/1840, Daniel S.?), female (b. 1760/1770, Catherine?), female (b. 1810/1820, Mary?) and female (b. 1835/1840, Mary?). I believe this is John's father and mother. The 1830 Ruscombmanor census shows John Young (b. 1780/1790 ??? ), two males (b. 1800/1810), male (b. 1815/1820, John?), female (b. 1780/1790, Catherine?), female (b. 1820/1825) and female (b. 1825/1830). Seven entries away is George Shadeler (b. 1770/1780), male (b. 1815/1820, Jacob?), male (b. 1820/1825, Henry?), female (b. 1800/1810), female (b. 1815/1820, Mary?) and female (b. 1825/1830). The 1820 Ruscombmanor census shows Ludwig Young (b. 1775/1795), three males (b. 1810/1820), female (b. 1775/1795) and three females (b. 1810/1820). In Alsace is John Young (b. 1775/1795), two males (b. 1795/1804), male (b. 1804/1810), male (b. 1810/1820, John?), female (b. 1775/1795, Catherine?) and female (b. 1810/1820). The 1810 Ruscombmanor census shows Ludwig Young (b. before 1766), male (b. 1800/1810, John Fry?), female (b. before 1766, Barbara?), female (b. 1765/1785, Catherine or Elizabeth?) and female (b. 1785/1794, Magdalena?). Two entries away is John Young (b. 1765/1785), male (b. 1800/1810), female (b. 1765/1785, Catherine?) and female (b. 1800/1810, Maria?). The 1790 Richmond census shows Ludwig Young with two males born before 1775, two males born 1775/1790 and three females. The 1813 will of Ludwig Young of Ruscombmanor names sons Ludwig, John, Daniel and George. Daughters are Christine (wife of Martin Christie), Catharine (wife of George Meck), Barbara (wife of Jonathan Becker), Elizabeth and Magdalena (the youngest). Also mentioned is John Fry, natural son of daughter Catharine. Notice that David and Michael are not mentioned. We are missing the births of John, George, Christine, Elizabeth and Magdalena. Two could have been born between David and Barbara (1772/1775, John?). Unless there were twins, the other two were born before 1770 or after 1782 (Magdalena). This implies that Ludwig was born between 1740 and 1750. It is in Berks Co, a few mi north of rte 78/22, just south of Kempton on rte 143. The Land over the Blue Moutain refers to the area where towns like Deer Lake, Orwigsburg, Schuykill Haven, Pottsville are located, which is Schuykill County. Albany is in Albany township which was incorp in 1752 and included what is now Greenwich township until 1755. Albany is a large township in NEmost part of Berks Co. The Blue Mountain is one of those rolling "hills" you saw from the plane. It's part of the Appalachians (those "hills" you saw) and crosses Pa from the Delaware Water Gap and extends in a somwhat southwesterly dierection to the center of the southern border of Pa where it crosses into Maryland. The Appalachian Trail transverses across the Blue Mountain when it (the trail) passes through Pennsylvania. The Blue Mountain was a natural dividing line when, in 1811, Schuykill County was formed from theNorthern part of what was then Berks County. So,until 1811, if you left Albany Township and went over the Blue Moutain, you were still in Berks County - after 1811, you were in Schukill. Very early maps (about 1760) of SE PA show the Blue Mountain whith a great deal of land above identified as "Pine Grove". At that time the area seemed to comprise much of what is now known as Schuylkill County. Much of this land "across the Blue Mountain" was given to early settlers for their service in the French-Indian War. Lehigh and LAncaster Counties are relevant to Ritter family history.
