General Notes (Husband)

Sailed from Belfast 1682 with his family and an indentured servant. He and his wife Ann and children came from Balleniskcrannell, Parish of Sego, County Armagh, Ireland, and settled in New Castle County on the Delaware.

His son Henry came over from Ireland in 1683 on the Shoip Lion, as an indentured servant to Robert Turner (Penn's Mag VIII., 334).

In 1699 Henry Hollingsworth was deputy surveyor for William Penn, for Chester County. He surveyed 30,000 acres being transferred to Penn's children William and Letitia.

In 1682 Valentine and his family, wit his son in law, Tomas Connaway, and John Musgrave an indentured servant, sailed from Belfast for the Delawre, and settled on a nearly 1000 acre plantation at Shelpot on the Brandywine. He founded both Newark and its Quaker meeting. HIs roots go back several generations in Ireland; he was originally of English Puritan stock, settled there either with a land grant for fighting in the civil war, or in an effort to supplant the Catholic Irish. Named "New Work". He was recorded as having tithes seized in Ireland - large quantities of grain. Prominent in affairs of Friends. Early Newark meetings held at his house, donated land for a meeting house. Also owned land in New Garden. He was apppointed a Jutice of the Peace for New Castle County, in 1685, and represented the county in the Assembly in 168203, 1687, 1688, 1689, 1695, and 1700. He died after 1710. He and Ann are interred in Friends' ground at Newark.

From "Immigration of the Irish Quakers to Pennsylvania"

Ther records of this family in Ireland are from the registers of Lurgan Meeting, County Armagh. There is of course no foundation for the tradition that Valentine Hollingsworth married Catharine, daughter of Henry Cornish, High Sheriff of London, who was executed in 11685. It is probable that the Hollingsworths went over from England to Irealnd with other planters early in the 17th century, but there is no proof to show that they came from Cheshire, as stated by some histories of the family. "

Henry was born "abut the sixth month in the yeare 1632".

Some of my info on VAlentine Hollingsworth is from "Irish Quaker Immigration into Pennsylvania".

According to Earl Darrah (web site), alot of the info about Valentine and his children and grandchildren is from the Hollingsworth Register published for many years by Harry Hollinsworth, starting in April 1965. He was a careful researcher and a Hollingsworth history guru. He thought Valetine's parents were Henry and Katheran Hollinworth both b ca 1600. Valentine and his son Thomas probably came to America on the ship "Antelope" in Dec 1682 and settled in Delaware. Another son, Henry, came on the ship "Lion", sometimes spelled Lyon, in Oct 1683, and settled in Pennsylvania. All were prominently identifeid with William Penn and his Society of Friends.

A current source of info on the family is Richard Hollingsworth ([email protected]). He has a large database.

"Descendants of Valentine Hollingswroth, Sr. Society", established 1993. Sounds like Earl Darrah belongs to it, and Robert Coleman ([email protected]) is president.

Earl Darrah lists a second Henry Hollingsworth, an infant, born in 1656 and died in 1658, about the time the second Henry Hollingsworth was born.

Valentine left no will and his estate was never administered.

General Notes (Wife)
