I have a discrepancy in the children's names despite having talked with some of the children adn grandchildren. The five children listed in Willard's death notice don't include "Catherine", who my father said my Aunt Mayme took in while others may have stayed with his Aunt Amanda. Other sources told me it was Julia that Aunt Mayme took in, and that the other children went to relatives of their mother in Delaware. That is what the family says. I remember Julia being closely involved with my family somehow, and had actually thought that she either was my father's aunt, or had been one of the foster children Bessie Mae took in.
He graduated from Delaware College in Newark, in I have both 1892 and 1901. I have that in 1900/ 1901 he was serving his second term as a member of the five man Delaware State Board of Education. He was specifically responsible as Superintendent of Schools for Delaware County. He studied and passed the state bar exam, about 1903, then served a term in the Delaware State Legislature about 1904, was principal of a local school and respected as being very bright. (This could conceivably have coincided with being superintendent of the area schools; New York State had a similar position. It was a local administrative position on the state level and the administrators served on the State Board of Education and coordinated between the state and the district, as well as enforcing state laws. )
Then, after 1908, he went to Salt Lake City, Utah, as a special agent for teh U.S. government land office (government land lawyer). A son recalled riding around to various farms with him on horseback.
On 28 Aug 1908 prob in Delaware City, Delaware, he married Julia Rebecca C Sadler, the daughter of James E adn Laura Sadler. The 1900 census shows her in Delaware City with her family and Willard Smith, strangely enough, boarding. James Sadler is said by Willard's son's widow to have been a mayor of Delaware City, and Willard's son William was a mayor of Delaware City for about two terms in the 1950's or so. James Sadler was also a coal seller. Smith family members still live on James Sadler's property, but in 1900, it was mortgaged and James and wife came from Maryland. 1880 census has him nine years old, census enumerated ___ day of June. registration at Delaware College age 16, Sept 6, 1888. Regitration for bar (not admitted until Nov 1903), Delaware he said on Sept 20 1897 he was 25. Willard is buried in Salt Lake City. His widow returned to Delaware City. Then somehow one of the five children got sent to live with Aunt Mayme, my father's aunt, and the others got sent to two of their mother's sisters in Delaware City. Laura and Gertrude.
