General Notes (Husband)
Deacon. He is often confused with the other Joseph Noyes, of Thomas Noyes son of Peter Noyes, who lived in Sudbury at the same time. As Carl Flegal (a Raymond cousin) points out, that Joseph Noyes would have been too young to be the Joseph who married Mary Darville. NOyes Genealogy, Vol 2 (James' descendants) bears this out. (Noyes, Harriett, 1904).
Further: The record of Peter Noyes' descendants shows that his son Joseph died before April 2, 1661, when his will was probated. (He died in Barbados; see Hist. Gene. Register, Vol 47, p 72)
Deacon Joseph Noyes (if not still confused with Thomas' son Joseph, Noyes carefully distinguishes him from PETER's son Joseph), was selectman in Sudbury for 28 yars from 1662, constable, 1667 and 1668, justice of the peace 1679, many other offices. He was a man of considerable property, and owned a number of slaves. He was a staunch and spirited proponent of temperance; he thought alcohol had reduced the "savages" and "heathen" to their current state. Also either knew Latin, or pretended to.
He wrote:
"To the Middlesix County Court: -- In answer to warrant received, I have used what means I could to get the selectmen together, but by reason of one trobel and another, it has been neglected. It is the minds of most of us that ther should be none to retale drink amongst us by reason of the growing sin of drunkness amongst us.
Our fathers came into this wilderness to enuoy the gospel and its ordinances in its purity, and the conversion of the heathen, but insted of converting them, amongst other sins we have tought them to be drunkards, which we may have cause to fear God has permitted them to be such a scourge as at this present. There be thos that sesir lecenses, but such as cannot command themselves ar not fit for such an imploie or trust. Verbum sapienti satis est quod suffizit. All things considred , it is not mine one mind only, but of some others, that Col. Samuel Horr is best accommodated and the most sutable man that presents himself wiling to undertake to entertain travellers, wich, as I understand, is the only, or at least the chief end of a house of entertainment, and not Tonn drunkards. Plain dealing I think is best. I pray pardon my boldness. Your servant, Joseph Noyes, selectman. Sudbury, Febr. the 29th, 1692.
