General Notes (Husband)

From "The Hulets of Berkshire, Massachusetts, by Ron Bernard. He may possibly have been the son of Thomas who landed in Boston as early as 1630 from England. the name has eben found in nearby Charlestown as well as in Ipswich and Newton. - or not.

John Howlett/ Hulet is often confused with John Howlett, a son of Thomas Howlett, who lived all his life in Topsfield, and married Susannah Hudson. That John died by 1675, as below, leaving a wife and a daughter as his only heirs. His other two children had died.

John Hulett (possibly a mariner) came to America prior to 1672. He married Abigail, daughter of Michael and Abigail (Bedle) Powell of Dedham and Boston. John bought land in Boston on April 26, 1678 and sold it on September 8, 1679. They probably moved to Newton, MA and then on to Rehoboth, MA. John died at Rehoboth, MA, on November 6, 1708.

From a letter on the Internet from Orville Cox Day, something about a tyrant named Sir Edmond Andros, appointed governor of Massachusetts and Connecticut, messing with their charters, and John Howlett refused to live in Boston near the Tyrant Andros, so he "abandoned his blacksmith shop and moved to Newton". Did I mention that this family is mentally a bit off?

Robert Charles Anderson, Michael Powell of Dedham and Boston, NEHGR, 1977, p 173-174.

Abigail m by 1671, John Howlett of Boston, mariner. This is not the same John Howlett as he who was treated by Walter Goodwin Davis in "The Ancestry of Dudley Wildes" (Portladn, 1959, p 56. This secnod John Howlett married Susana Hudson, and had, according to Davis, three children born in Boston.

But the second of these children is, on the Boston records, "Samuel of John and Abigail Howlet born Feb 6 1672/3. This is the Samuel Howlett naemd in the will of Abigail (Powell) Howlett, not Susanna (Hudson) Howlett.

John Howeltt (Thomas), husband of Susanna Hudson, was dead by 1675, whereas John Howlett, Husband of Abigail Powell, was living as late as 1679. (Suffolk Deeds (Boston, 1880-1902, 11:221)

The actual John Hulettt who married Abigail Powell, lived in Newton, Massachusetts, then Rehoboth, where John Hulet (him?) died Nov 6, 1708. His only proven son is Samuel, who may have died young as no record of him after March 1676/7. Two probable sons are associaetd with him as they are the right age and lived in the right places to be his sons; Michael and John. Michael had the same name as Abigail's father, Michael Powell.

From NEHGR 1977; the John Howlett of Boston, mariner, who Abigail Powell married, was not the same John Howlett as he who was treated by Walter Goodwin Davis in The Ancestry of Dudley Wildes (Portland, 1959., p 56. This second John Howlett married Susanna Hudson, and had, according to Davis, three children born in Bostno. But the second of these children is, on teh Boston records, "Samuel of John and Abigail Howlet born Fb 6"1672/3. This is the Samuel Howlett named in the will of Abigail (Bedle) Powell, and his mother was Abigail (Powell) Howlett, not Ssuanna (Hudson) Howlett. John Howlett (Thomas), husband of Ssuanna Hudson, was dead by 1675, whereas John Howlett, husband of Abigail Powell, was living as late as 1679. Suffolk Deeds (Boston, 1880-1902), 11: 221.

I have seen it reported that it was John Hulit the husband of Hannah Whitaker who died in Rehoboth in 1708. There was also a John Hulit who had a child born in Newton shortly after John Hulit and Hannah Whitaker had children in Concord, but the wife was different. It could ahve been the same John Hulit, though that is inconsistent with the idea that Hannah Whitaker the widow of John Hulit of Concord ended up some years later in Enfield, married to William Hurlbert, son of Anne Allen by her second husband. It would not be beyond any family that associated with the Whitakers to commit bigamy, which was a common solution to marital breakdown before the present day. It isn't impossible that it was actually John Hulit II who had a child by a different woman in Newton, and I know of know proof that it was not he who married Hannah Whitaker. The fact that JOhn Hulit and Hannah Whitaker had children named Mary and Jonathan, a Mary Hulit married Joseph Allen the half grand nephew of William Hulbert, a Jonathan Hulit of Rehoboth showed up on the land next to theirs, and John Hulit II is known to have gone to Rehoboth and died there, together with some notion floating around that Hannah Whitaker the widow of John Hulit of Concord married William Hurlbert the next door neighbors and close relations of hte Allens, suggests that John Hulit of Concord was at least related to John Hulit II of Newton and Rehoboth.

Abigail, his first wife, died in 1677, leaving the way open for him to have married anybody anyplace anywhen. If Michael was born in 1679, his mother cannot ahve been Abigail Powell.

General Notes (Wife)

Abigail daughter of Michael Powell, b England 1605, and Abigail Bede or Bedle, bapt Wolverston, Suffolk, England, 14 Mar 1608 (TAG 23 (1947): 149-153) - they married in Engalnd about 1630. Her identity and that of her husband, John II Howlett, are discussed in Robert Charles Anderson, Michael Powell o fDedham and Boston, NEHGR, 1977, pp 173-174.

I'm not clear on WHO this paragraph refers to; Abigail Powell or Abigail Bede/ Bedle. Abigail Powell could not have married in 1630 and had no children until the 1670's.

Abigail the mother, widow, died in Boston bef 21 Apr 1677 when her inventory was taken. She left bequests to her four daughers, including Abigail Howlett, and to Samuel Howlett.
