General Notes (Husband)

1658 HUBBARD Jonathan, s. John and Mary (Merriam),____, 1658. P. R. 1. View More Birth Lowell
which means he can't have been born in Connecticut.

"Joanne" sent me some pages of data from "the Olive".

Savage says that Jonathan was a brother of John Hubbard of Boston. The will of Robert Merriam, dated Dec 10, 1681, mentions his cousin jon. Hubbard who lives with me. The term cousin is quite likely to mean nephew. Merriam also names wife Mary and cousin Isaac Day, in Old England, son of my sister Joan Day. He names also brothers Joseph and George and their children, three daughters and two sons.

Now Shattuck in his History of Concord says that the wife of Jonathan Hubbard was Hannah Merriam, niece to Deacon Robert. But she is not mentioned in Roberts will, neither is she found in the lists of the children of his brothers Joseph and George. Deacon Robert had no children. George had a daughter Hannah who was married to William Taylor.

Joseph, who died early, was ancestor of most of the Concord Merriams. His will, dated Oct 29 1640, is given in NEHGR . 2 page 184 but gives no listo f children. In the Concord History are mentioned John who married Mary Cooper in 1663 and had John, Nathan, Joseph, Samuel and "some daughters". Joseph married Sarah Stow 1643, left one daughter. The family was of consequence in Concord. Deacon Robert married Mary Sheafe. He died Feb 18 1681 age 72. It is to be noted that this is before the marriage of Jonathan Hubbard, showing clearly that the legacy of land was not made on accout of his marriage to Hannah, which marriage did not occur until a year later.

It seems generally accepted that the mother of Jonathan Hubbard was Mary Merriam. Her name was Mary. As no evidence is advanced, for the name Merriam that name is likely to be a guess arising from the relationship mentioned in the will of Robert Merriam. But the vital records of the immediate family of Robert allow no place for a Mary who might have been mother to Jonathan Hubbard.

It is quite as likely that her name may have been Sheafe. Some color is given to this guess inasmuch as Mary Sheafe Merriam is quite as insistant as Robert over the relationship. She names him "cousin' and twice speaks of him living with her. She names "cousin Jonathan Hubbard that now lives with me and cousin Samuel Merriam" as her executors. Jonathan's father was somewhat of a roamer, and Jonathan had for long made his home with the Merriams. Jonathan's father was John Hubbard, and his grandfather, it is supposed George. George Hubbard is supposed to have come first to Water town, tho have removed in 1635 to Wethersfield. He bought his Guilford property when he decided to go there in 1648, from Jacob Sheafe, brother of Mary Merriam. This was when John was 18, just the courting age. [The implication is that Mary Merriam was nee Sheafe; she had married a Merriam.]

I just realized that my notes make it clear that I dont have all the information.

It says that Robert Merriam was married to Mary Sheafe, however we know this. He had no children. He died at age 72. His will lists his brothers, Joseph and George. George had one daughter, Hannah. Allegedly his will names Joseph's children but my source didn't give them. A different will named specific sons and "a bunch of girls".

So one would need to see Joseph's and Robert's wills.

We also need the marriage record of Robert Merriam and Mary Sheafe.

Both Robert Merriam and his wife Mary Sheafe inssited that JOnathan or John Hubbard, who subsequently married Mary allegedly Merriam, was their "cousin" and lived with them. He seems to have been independently both of their cousin. They also had a cousin named Day.

How they were all cousins is not known. John grew up in Connecticut. The Day family lived in connecticut, and the Connecticut River valley.

In Guilford, Connecticut, George Hubbard the father of Jonathan, bought a plot of land from Jacob Sheafe, who this source identifies as the brother of Mary Merriam. Maybe she's the wife of Robert Merriam, and it rather looks that way, but it doesn't explicitly say so.

I found a birth record for JOnathan Hubbard, in Lowell, I think, and it gives his mother as Mary (Merriam), but from what I wrote, there could be more to that record that was hard to read and transcribed only as illegible. I found a marriage record for Jonathan Hubbard to Mary Rice in Concord.

One needs to see a marriage record for John Hubbard and Mary Merriam or Sheafe or whoever she was, and a marriage record for Robert Merriam and his wife Mary. It looks as though the latter marriage would have occurred in Massachusetts, but not necessarily, and the former may ahve taken place in Connecticut.

In Connecticut, the records are spotty, and they are also often hard to locate.

It would also be good to look at the birth record of Jonathan Hubbard, and those for the other children of John Hubbard and Mary possibly Merriam.

I do not have the subscription to NEHGS at the moment to be able to do this. Those records are at NEHGS, and some of the Connecticut records are there as well. Some of both are also at Ancestry.

Some of these people could also be discussed in Teh Great Migration Begins, which is a subscription database at NEHGS, if anyone has access to that.

Yours,
Villandra
