General Notes (Husband)

It is not clear where he died. Even though he is commonly said to have died in Taunton, Massachusetts, he is not supposed to have ever left England.

It is not clear where he was born. According to Newell ancestry : the story of the antecedents of William Stark Newell, they were a family of ironmasters of Pontypool, Wales, a place celebrated for its working of iron. It was always possible to be in a place celebrated for the working of one's trade without being from there. Brothers James and Henry were connected with iron forges at Braintree and Lynn in Massachusetts. In 1652 they started independently as ironmasters. In October of that year an agreement was made between the town of Taunton and Henry Leonard, by which Henry and James Leonard and Ralph Russell were to set up a bloomery works on the Two Mile River. Their forge was erected in that part of Taunton which later became Raynham, Massachusetts, It was the first forge in Plymouth Colony, and before long probably became the principal one in America. James Leonard remained in Taunton the remainder of his life, while Henry went to several places in Massachusetts and subsequently to New Jersey, where he carried on the iron business. From these beginnings by the two brothers spread great iron industries, and their descendants were engaged in such enterprises for many years. Tus the name of Leonard came to be synonymous with the iron industry.
