William Noyes, son of Robert Noyes, was born probably at Cholderton, near Salisbury, Wiltshire, about 1568, died there in the spring of 1622 (estate inv. 30 Apr.); married about 1594 Anne Stephens, daughter of Nicholas Stephen of Burdrop Manor, born about 1575, buried at Cholderton 7 Mar. 1657-8, 82y, sister of Dorothy (Stephens) Parker, mother of the Rev. Robert Parker (see Wheeler, History of Stonington, Connecticut).
Noyes received his BA degree from University College Oxford 31 May 1592. In 1601 he was appointed rector at Cholderton, a post he held until 1621, shortly before his death. His widow was appointed administrix 28 May 1622.
Anne’s nephew Robert Parker, called "the father of non-conformists," went to Holland in exile, and later came to Massachusetts; he did not marry. Anne's will (18 Mar. 1655, 20 Apr. 1658) named her "two sons now in New England," and her sons-in-law Thomas Kent and Robert Reade, her executor.
Children Rev. William Noyes probably all by Ann, born at Cholderton:
REV. JAMES NOYES (1608-1656) and
NICHOLAS NOYES (1615-1701)
Two brothers, Rev. James Noyes and Nicholas Noyes, came to Massachusetts aboard the ship Mary and John in March 1633, and were part of the first group of about forty settlers of Newbury, MA in 1635. Their father was Rev. William Noyes, rector of Cholderton (county Wilts), England [about 11 miles from Salisbury], a graduate of University College, Oxford in 1592. Their mother was Anne Parker (sister of the scholar, Robert Parker); their cousin Rev. Thomas Parker accompanied them.
James and Nicholas had two older brothers, Ephraim (1596 - 1659); and Nathan (1597 - 1651) who succeeded their father as rector of Cholderton. A younger sister and brother remained in England.
General Notes (Wife)
Her will is probated on 4/27/1658, she bequeathed to sons James and Nicholad in New England.
She was wrongly believed to be Anne Parker the sister of Rev. Thomas Parker's father. This was in an early (1904) Noyes genealogy and got perpetuated. A response to the article dated 1906, cut from some journal and pasted into someone's copy of the book, states that actually Anne was the sister of Dorothy Stephens, the mother of Rev. Thomas Parker. Someone recently posted that information to a Noyes message board, which straightens that out. The person who pasted it judged that since it was so soon after the appearance of teh book and must have come from a genealogical journal in response to the book, it probably is based on superior information. The notion that Anne was herself a Parker is simply a mistake that stuck because it was in the book.
Here is the posting:
Anne (Stephens or Parker), wife of Rev. William1 Noyes, Cholderton City, England circa 1568.
Monica Barney emailed me the following on 7/31/96:
However, I got an interesting note from Veronica Smith ([email protected]) a few weeks ago that I have yet to put in my main file of Noyes info. She writes: You mentioned the question regarding the parents of Nicholas Noyes. Perhaps I can shed some light on it for you. I, too, have obtained much information from the same book of reference you and others have used:
"Genealogical Record of Some of the Noyes Descendants of James, Nicholas and Peter Noyes" (Volume 1, Descendants of Nicholas Noyes) Collected and compiled by Col. Henry E. Noyes, U.S.A. and Miss Harriette E. Noyes - Members of NEHGS - Boston 1904
However, I was fortunate enough to obtain a copy in which a newspaper clipping was pasted into the back of Vol. I. The clipping is dated 1906, some two years after the publication of the foregoing book. The clipping reads as follows:
* 8861. 2. Noyes. R.W. N., Oct. 22, 1906. The "Additional Corrections and Additions," page 3, of Wheeler's "History of Stonington, Conn." has the following: "Miss Harriet E. Noyes of New Hampshire says: 'From recent investigations in England the name of Rev. William Noyes's wife was proven to be Anne Stephens, daughter of Nicholas Stephens of Burdrop Manor, and sister of Dorothy Stephens, mother of Rev. Thomas Parker.'" M. G. F.
From the way the notice is written, I suspect is was printed in some genealogical publication. Since the date referenced is two years after the "Noyes Descendants" was published, I suspect the new information is more correct, although I have not obtained any actual copies from English records to substantiate it.
Mary Parker, as his wife, is apparently an error which has persisted, as so many people have relied on the information in the Noyes Genealogy and have not pursued further research.
Miss Harriette E. Noyes was aware that Anne Stephens was thought by some to be the wife of Rev. William Noyes, as she makes reference to it on Page 45 of Vol. I. Apparently, at the time of publication, it was their opinion that that information was erroneous. However, further investigation subsequent to the printing of the book, seems to have proved that information to be correct all along.
Also, in reading the will of the widow of Rev. William Noyes, she is referred to only as Anne Noyes. Therefore, the will could easily be the will of Anne (Stephens) Noyes, rather than Anne (Parker) Noyes as previously thought.
I hope to one day obtain a copy of the original marriage record for Rev. William Noyes so that I will have the actual copy in my posession. In the meantime, based on the newspaper clipping, I have indicated the wife to be Anne Stephens.

Their mother was Anne Parker (sister of the scholar, Robert Parker); their cousin Rev. Thomas Parker accompanied them.
I have this, also, "Ann'es nephew 'Robert Parker, called 'the father of nonconformists', went to Holland in exile, and later came to Massachusetts, he did not marry. anne's will (18 Mar 1658) named her "two sons now in New England", and her sons in law Thomas Kent and Robert Reade, her executor."
It looks as if Robert adn Thomas have been confused.
