General Notes (Husband)

The will of John Egglynden the Elder, of Bedynden, 18 January 1511. To be buried in teh churchyard of Bedynden. To the hgih altar there, etc. To every godchild, 6d. To the high altars of Halden and Smerden. A bushel of wheat to be made into penny loaves and distrubuted to the poor people of Biddenden in the churchyard on Good Friday every year for twenty years. To the brotherhod priest of Bidyenden 6s 8d a year for life. To the church of Biddenden. To son John, if he will be a priest, 10 pounds to pray for my soul, etc. And if he will be no priest, then teh said 10 pounds to pay another priest to pray, etc. To wife Alice half of household goods, adn teh other half to son Richard. The residue [sic] of all goods to son Richard, whom I make the sole executor. Stephen Pell, clerk of Smerden, overseer, and to him 3s 4d. Witnesses: John illes, Walter Brynganden, gylberd Stedman, and Thomas Ponett. I make John Lechynden, John Elsy, Walter Brykynden of Biddenden, and Richard Morelyne of Benynden my feofees. My wife to have either her jointure or else her dwelling in my messuage where I dwell, the "soler" on the "doyce" side with the Chamber under, sufficient fuel and fire, the little garden at the head of teh soler and another litle garden at longtown pett, and her easement in kitchen and brewhouse, also one third of my son Richard Egolynden's fruit, during her "wedewoth", and an annunity of 20s. paid by son Richard during her widowhood, etc. Son Rchard to occupy and take the profits of teh said messuage that I dwell in and the lands called "Smersole soo house" [sic} until he come to age of twenty-one, paying the charges ebfore rehearsed, and when he come to said age my feofees to deliver said lands and tenements to him and his heirs forever. He also to have all my outlands and tenements which I have not willed, paying to John Egoynden my son 30 pounds, 5 sshillings a year for six years out of my outlands, that is 28 acres bought of Vincent Muune, land called Goreland, Morehams, adn Biddennen Meed adn luetham. If said Richard refuse to pay teh said 30 puonds, then John to have teh said outlands. For twenty years 5 pounds a year shall be levied out of the land called lenttham t o priests clerks and poor people to keep an obit in the church of Bedynden. Proved 10 March 1511-12 by teh executor named. (Archdeaconry of Canterbury, vol. 11, fo 7.)
