Children

General Notes (Husband)

emigrated to Newark, NJ in early 1870's, was survived by children, my great grandfather didn't know names or how many.

According to the 1900 census he emigrated in 1868. If he did, he was only 17 at the time, and his father had just died in Belfast, or was soon to die in Belfast. His father died in November of 1868 of "asthma" lasting 12 months.

I found him in various records in Newark. 1900 census says he lived at 88 Jefferson St., his wife was named Nelly, he was b April 1851, he was 49 and married for 28 years, born in Ireland, he'd been in the U.S. for 32 years. Which means he came to this country at age 17. He rented the house where he lived. He was a watchmaker. His wife was the mother of five children, one of them still living.

1900 census and city directories through 1891 listed him as William T. Lowe, watches and jewelry. He was at 28 1/2 Ferry until 1891, when he was at 386 Market St. I don't find him in the 1910 census. Nor Nellie.

The other William Lowe lived at 82 Summer Ave. was maried to Mary #, and had Mary J, William, and Lillie, as of 1880. He was a hosier until 1890 when he was a hostler. He was also a hosier or something like it in the 1880 census. He does not appear in the 1900 census.

William immigrated from Ireland in 1868 and had been in the U.S. for 38 year or 34 years, in 1900, neither of which adds up. He was married to Mary in 1880, and the mother of Catherine, age 3, but in 1900 he had been married to Nellie C for 28 years, and she was the mother of 5 children, 1 still living in 1900.

William and Mary/ Nellie had a child, Catherine, three years old in the 1900 census. She may or may not be the one child of five who lived.

Nellie emigrated from Ireland in 1865 and had been in the U. S. 35 years.

They must have married about 1872. At that time he would have been 21.

He is also found in the city directory, 1900-01; a watchmaker.

1880 census: just two William Lowe's in Newark and no others;, both 29 years old, both married to women named Mary.
