John Allen was probably born in Kempston about 1558, son of Thomas Allen and his first wfie Alice. Name of John's wife is unknown nad no record found of their marriage, probably abaout 1682.

Kempen cites Gillian Dollittle as speculating that son Richard Allen - the Richard Allen mentioned in Families of Ancient Windsor, I would guess, was born in Kempston to John Allen. Van Kempen.could find no Richard, son of John, bornin Kempston, andno mention of Richard in John's will in 1626 - which could mean he was dead by then, which would make it hard for him to be Richard who fathered Lydia, who Familes of Ancient Windsor says was baptized in November 1629, and of John, baptized in Jan 1627. Chalk up another one to Gillian Dollittle's intellectual abilities. Van Kempen notes that said Richard Allen alleged father of John of New Hampshire did have children baptized in Kempston beginning 28 Feb 1612 according to Families of Ancient New Haven, or 28 Feb 1613/14 (1614) according to Van Kempen.

Kempen mentions two marriages in the village church of John Allen; to Joan Fowler and to Agnes Flanders, both after his three known children were born, and no evidence it is the same John Allen.

In 1600, John witnessed his father Thomas's will adn signed as John Allen, Smith.

In the name of God Amen; the one and thirtieth daye of march in the year of our God 1626, andin the Second yere of the raigne of our souvaryne lord Charles by the grace of God King of England Scotland --- and Ireland defender of the faith. I John Allen of Kempston in the coutye of Bedford and in the dowses of -- beinge of wohle mynde and in good and ffit remembr-- prayse be unto allmightie god do make and ordayne this my presente testamente contaeyninge here in my last well in manare and forme following: ffirst I do commende my soule unto Allmightie God my maker and redeemer and my bodye to be buried in the church yard of All Hallows [All Saints] in Kempston a foresaid.

Item I geve and bequeeth unto James Allen my sonne and to his heirs forever all that my messuage [dweeling house] and -- with all the appertenances threunto belonging the -- I now dwell in lying and being in Eastend of Kempston -- the parsoneage grande. Excepte the east end of my dwelling house that is to say the two chambers and the lofts over them. The two chambers with the lofts over them I geve and bequeeth unto George Allen my younger sonne and his heires with this condition tha thtey shall not sell them away to anye other partie but to his brother James Allen and his heires geveing for them ---

All the rest of my goode and chattells moveable and unmovable, my debts payed my buriall and my wifes that was discharged I geve adn bequeeth unto James Allen, George Allen and Alice Willsere my three children to be equally devided between them all. And I make and ordane James Allen my osn my whole executor...
