General Notes (Husband)
SAmuel (John, Samuel) b 5 Feb 1673 Deerfield,MA m 29 May 1700, Hannah
Burroughs, b 1675 of Enfield,CT . She d 3/5/1702.
He removed from Northampton to King St. Enfield, to escape from Indians
about 1700; farmer, resided on present Chauncey Allen place.
He d Enfield,CT 1735. Children all born Enfield. He may have also
had several other children.
From Allen Memorial, Family of Samuel of Windsor CT: SAMUEL3 ALLEN (John2, Samuel1), b. Feb. 5, 1673; m. May 29, 1700, Hannah Burroughs, b. at Northampton in 1675. In 1697 "the town exsep of Samuel Allen as inhabitent in the town and grant to him eleven acres of field Land & two of medow on condison he cum & settel."(+) In 1698 the boundary of his land is given as adjoining on the north of the farm of his brother John on Kings street, and extended west to the great river. This farm has lately been known as the Chauncy Allen farm. The farm remained in the hands of Samuel's descendants until a few years ago. Samuel Allen was chosen constable in 1715. He d. 1735.
The house must have passed to Samuel's son John. Chauncey Allen's line from Samuel was John, John, Isaac. Chauncy was born in Enfield, 1796, married in 1822, Mary Pease, died in 1850. He should be on an 1847 map but not an 1868 map. His middle name is not given. His son Isaac A. Allen did live in Enfield; married there in 1850. Had son Isaac A born 1859. Isaac Jr moved to Hartford and was an architect.
On 1855 Hartford Co map, Chauncy, Henry and Horace's places can be found, along with that of George Moses Allen, a son of Henry Sr. Somewhat north is the apparently larger farm of IA Allen. This is apparently Isaac Almaan (sp?) Allen, son of Chauncy Allen. Near him and also across the river are two properties of A. Allen; he was tehre in 1868 as well, and I could nto discover who he was. John and Azariah were playing musical properties; they owned more than one property. North of them in Thompsonville are the properties of J.B. and J.V. Allen. JV Allen was Jeremiah Vallet Allen, from Israel, Moses, Azariah, John.
Homes were in Ware House Point.
Children b. in Enfield.
Orrin Allen gives no place of birth for Samuel.
Steve Shook in his worldconnect database indicates doubt of where Samuel Allen actually lived at death.
Death: 05 MAR 1772 in Deerfield, Connecticut Note: It is unknown if Deerfield is actually located in Connecticut. Deerfiel d may be Enfield, Hartford Co., Connecticut.
The source of the confusion may be that Enfield was part of Massachusetts until 1749. Deerfield was near Northampton. To go to Enfield one simply rowed down the Connecticut River not very far.
LDS has dod 17 Feb 1735 in Enfield, Hartford, Ct. According to everyone who gave that date and cited LDS as their source.
Willard and Orrin Allen differ on the children of Samuel; Orrin says that the first Hannah, given by Willard, died, and lists the birth of a second one, who also died.
General Notes (Wife)
This is one of several versions I have of her origins.
Samuel Allen genealogy states that she was born in Northampton, Massachusetts in 1675. NEHGS vital records does not confirm that, though it is not clear that they have vital records for Northampton. Probably she was not born in Northampton.
"Samuel Allen and Hannah Burrows may have been married on May 29, 1700, ra ther than May 19, 1700 [Vital Records, Volume 1A, page 9; History of Enfi eld, Volume 2, page 1765]. Some printed sources indicate that Hannah Burr ows married Henry Woodward. 1" It sounds like Vital Records for Enfield, Connecticut atleast verifies that Hannah Burroughs did marry Samuel Allen in Enfield. I think that it was Hannah the daughter of John Burroughs and Hannah Colver of Windsor and New London, who was born 15 Dec 1674 in New London, who married Henry Woodward, not in Enfield.
It is important to note that in 1700, Samuel Allen lived in Enfield, not Northampton and not Deerfield, and that the fact that the marriage is confirmed to have occurred in Enfield makes it more likely that his wife was from Enfield.
If she was really the daughter of John Burroughs and Hannah Colver, an idea that atleast is relatively well researched, then she was born 15 Dec 1674 in New London, New London, Connecticut.
Actually the will of Hannah Burrows, widow of John Burrows, names her daughter Hannah Woodward. Then it names Henry Woodward, who would have been her son in law, as an executor. Hannah died in 1731. Hannah Burroughs the wife of Samuel Allen allegedly died in 1702, before giving Samuel three more children. Her husband, Samuel, died in 1736. This appears to prove that JOhn Burroughs and Hannah Colver are not the parents of Hannah Burroughs, and require that the entire family was that of John Burroughs of Windsor and New London. The family were nearby and had similar names. The names Hannah and John were very common in that time. The name Burroughs is apparently a respelling of "Burrows", and is not rare.
Speaking of the family being nearby, Enfield deeds of sale of land clearly show that Samuel Allen, William Hulbird and John Burroughs were neighbors.
Houseofnames.com says the name was brought to England by the Normans and was given to families who lived near hills, since the name is Old English for "hill", and that further "the" Burroughs family is descended from a Norman nobleman named "De Burgh" (of a town), who lived in Hampshire. Notice the inclusion of three mutually contradictory ideas in quick succession. Since the name is common, came from different parts of England and is held by people of different haplogroups, the genesis that it comes from an old English (Saxon) word for "hill" makes sense. JOhn Burroughs' Y haplogroup suggests the male line ancestor was a Norse v
Viking, not necessarily or even most likely a Norman, but given marital habits in medieval England the direct male line may not have consistently worn the name Burroughs.
Victor Burroughs, http://familytremaker.genealogy.com/users/b/u/r/Victor-Leamy-Burroughs/FILE/0001page.html, also extensive posts to the Burroughs forum at Genforum, has researched the family of John Burroughs of Enfield, Connecticut in some detail; this family has also been discussed extensively at the Burroughs forum at Genforum. His information on Hannah appears to all come from secondary sources. He believes that she was the daughter of John Burroughs of Enfield, and cites a half dozen published sources for that idea. He specifically stated to me that the newer Burroughs of ENfield genealogy came to the conclusion that Hannah was the daugther of JOhn of Enfield. However, he wrote to me that this genealogy does not explain this line of reasoning. His other main source is Francis Olcott Allen's History of Enfield Connecticut. I don't have direct access to this book. As nearly as I've been able to learn from assorted people, this book states that John of Enfield had a daughter named Hannah, but her birth was never recorded because the Enfield records don't begin until a year or two after she was born. Her date of birth of 1680 or 1681 is estimated. That John had such a daughter is proven by his will, which names her, then age 12 or 13, as his daughter, along with his other daughter who was still living, and his son John. The book also contains the actual record of the marriage of Samuel Allen and Hannah Burroughs.
Apparently no records proving the identity of Hannah Burroughs who married Samuel Allen exist. Victor Burroughs argues that it simply makes sense to think that the Hannah who Samuel married was the Hannah who lived in that community and was of age to be married. I can find no evidence that some different fate such as death or marriage to someone else befell Hannah the daughter of John of Enfield. John's widow Hannah remarried after his death, but she did not marry Samuel Allen. The Hannah of Windsor and New London is accounted for; it was she who married Mr. Woodward.
Victor Burroughs posted the following further transcribed information to the Burroughs forum:
The History of Enfield, CT. Francis Olcott AllenV.1 pg 24BOOTH (2nd gen.)William married Hannah BURROUGHS d. of John Burroughs 1693, (William Booth) d. 1753 age 89 left 2 sons. This seems to indicate that William Booth married John and Hannah Burroughs daughter Hannah. This I know to be incorrect. Hannah was born in 1680 and would have been 13 years old. John Burroughs died in 1691 leaving his wife , a widow, with 4 children. She is far more likely the one who married William. She would have been 35 years old in 1693, William Booth was 29. Hannah Booth died in Enfield and based on her age at death, she was born in 1658.
[My note: Hannah Burroughs witnessed a deed in Enfield in 1698.
(Ancestry of Edgar Rice Burroughs, which got his emigrant ancestor wrong, takes the position that it was Hannah the widow of John who married William Booth, and THEN she married Samuel Allen. Heh, heh, heh. the ability to write science fiction must run in that family.)
