General Notes (Husband)
Mathew Beckwith came with Mr. Winthrope in 1635, settled temporarily at Saybrook Point. Resided in Hartford in 1645. His history prior to that time is obscure, accdng to Connecticut biogr encyclopedia. He bought the hometead of Wm Pratt, orig proprietor of Harford.
Connecticut genealogical encyclopedia says the fact that Mathew was 70 when he died accidentally, requiring an inquest, in 10/21/1680, is the only proof of his date of birth "presumably in Yorkshire". Maybe something has been found since then?
The Beckwith Book by Paul Beckwith. Cites Connecticut Records. Matthew Beckwith came over with Mr. Winthrope, in 1635, became temparily a settler in Saybrook Point. He was in teh shipping business, and died in 1681 in a fall.
When he died suddenly by accident, by mistaking his way on a dark night and falling from a cliff of rocks, his estate valued at 393 pounds, left wife, Elizabeth, and childrden, Mathew, John, Joseph, Benjamin, and two daughters, widows, the relicts of Robert Girard and Benjamin Grant, both of whom were mariners and probably perished at sea.
I also have his children from another source; three girls named; one married to JOSHUA Grant, the other two no husbands listed. Mary, Elizabeth and Sarah (m Joshua Grant). Another source has Robert Girard as Robert Grant.
He was also called Becket, partic in Branford.
The Beckwith book traces his ancestry to time of William the Conqueror, Sir Hugh de Malbisse, but doesn't give sourcs. There was a marriage to a dau of Sir John Baskerville, a desc of FRench and Engl royalty to Charlmemagne.
The line is traced to Marmaduke Beckwith, of Dacre and Clint, Yorkshre, m 1 Anne Dynley, dau of Robt Dyneley of Bramhope, 2 Ellen, widow of Wm Style of Haddockson. In 1597 sold Clint and bought Featherstone and Aitken. Had Thomas, father of Thomas, whose son, Geroge, bapt March 29, 1606, of Featherstone Castle, Yorkshire, was founder of the Virginia Family in 1648, others, including Mathew as the youngest son, this the author of the encyclpedia article feels could not be Mathew the immigrant.
Mathew had a son, Mathew, how had a son, Mathew. There may also have been multiple wives named Elizabeth.
The immigrant Mathew ws in the shipping business. Mots Beckwiths in several CT towns mainly assc'd w Lyme, CT, were among the wealthier settlers.
A Mathew Beckwith was sued by Mathew Marvin for slander, BEckwith made a public confession of his slandering him, and fine ws remitted by teh court. Plaintiff, Mathew Beckwith made free in 1658 (Beckwith Book)
Mathew BEckweith fined ten shillings for unreasonable and immoderate drinking at the Pinnance (CT Records
Uncas, an Indian, vs Mathew Beckwith, Jr, for buring a wigwam of his.
In 1664-1666.
MMathew Beckwith (1610-1681), Mathew Beckwith (1637-1727), Mathew Beckwith (1667-1740); it must have been the son of th immigrant who burned Uncas' wigwam.
The second Mathew Beckwith, son of immigarnt, had a rather interesting marital history; "Elizabeth Rogers, dau of Mathew Griswold, granted a divorce from her husband, JOhn Rogers, th founder of teh Rogerine Quakers, 10/12/1676, they married 10/17/1670. Shortly afterword she m Mathew BEckwith she had children by ea husband. In 1703, Rogers made a rash attempt to regain his divorced wife, then married to Beckwith; Beckwith complained that he laid hands on her, declaring she was his wife, threatened bEckwith that he would have her in spite of him , all of which Rogers confessed to be true. But he defended on the plea that she was really his wife. In June, 1703, Mathew BEckwith, Sr appeared in court and sore that he was in fear of his life of him.
Mathew BEckwith the first had died in 1681 "by mistaking his way on a dark night and falling from a cliff of rocks". So this Sr was the second.

From Lynn Diana Gazis, Mar 6 1999:
The Beckwith Book says he was b in Yorkshire in 1610, traces his ancestor back to the time of William the Conquerer, but gives no sources. The purported ancestor of William the Conquerer's time is Sir Hugh de Malbisse. Other people with the same name and sates don't match up.
Matthew had a son, Matthew, and he ahd a son Mathew. Confusion over which Mathew did what, particularly since more than one married Elizabeth.
The imigrant Mathew was in the shipping business. Thre are records of Beckwiths in several Connecitcut towns but mainly assc w Lyme, CT, where they stayed the longest and were among the wealthier settlers.
Mthew Marvin sued Mathew Beckwith for slander. Beckwtih made a public confession of his slandering him, fine remitted by the court, and the plaintiff, Mathew Beckwith made free in 1658.
Mathew Beckwith fined ten shillings for unreasonable and immoderate drinking at the Pinnance.
Minutes before the Corut of Assistants, 1610 to 1681. Mathew Beckwith, Jr., for burning a wigwam of his. [Caulinks' History of New London'. "Now, I have: Matew Beckwith (1620-81), Mathew Beckwith (1637-1727), and Mathew Beckwith (1667-1740), so I take it that the one burning down Uncas's wigwam would have been teh son of hte immigrant (being a juinior, and since the grandson of hte immigrant was not born yet, or at best, if I allow for the possibliity that my dates may be off, was an infant.) Either of the two elder Mathew Beckwiths could have slandered Mathew Marvin, and any of them could have drun excessively at the Pinnance (since The Beckwith Book gives no date for taht event).
The second Mathew Beckwith, the son of hte immigrant, had a rather interesting marital history. " (The account above).
Tehre is also alot in the Beckwith Book about property owned and shipping activiites.

As to Prudence; I wrote to somene, "in all the sources I found in hte library, Prudence is the daughter of Mathew Jr. Except in the soruce that doesn't list any Mathew Jr. How do you get her the daughter of Thomas? Is it possible there was more than one Prudence?"

The land owned by Mathew Beckwith on the adjustiment of the boundary line, with Lyme, was found to be mostly within the boundary of that town, though his house was on the portion belonging to New London (Connecticut Records).
The swams around New London being infested to an unusual degree by wolves, the general court ordered every town to pay a bounty fo fifteen shillings for the killing of a wolf within its bounds. IN 1673, Mathew Beckwith claimed bounty for killing two wolves. (Connecticut Records)
Beween 1660 and 1664, Mould and Coit constructed the "Speedwell, Hopewell adn Endeavor", which were called "Barques", ranging from twelve to twenty ton, and in value from 50 5o 82 pounds. They were built respectively for Thomas Bebee, William Keeney and Mathew Beckwith, but like other movable property in that day, often cahnged owners. "The Endeavor" made several voyages to teh West Indies, Robert Girard adn Samuel Chester commanders, adn was sold in Barbadoes (april 1666) for 2,000 pounds of sguar. [Connecticut records]
The master of a vessel was generally part owner of both cargo and craft, and not infrequently was his own factor, agent and tradesman. In the samll coasters, especially, the master or skiper was entirely indepenedent of orders. He went from place to place, chaffing and bartering, often changing his course and prolonging his stay on his own responsibility. New London, before 17900, was as much noted for her coasting vesels and skippers as of late years for her fine fleet of smacks and smack men. Among the early planters who were of this class, is mentioned Mathew Beckwith and others. (Connecticut Records)
From tax lists of Lyme, under Governor Andrus: Mathew eckwith had one person, house and lands, 8 oxen and cows, 2 yearlings, 66 sheep and 2 hogs. Joseph Beckwtih total pounds 137.

Patent of New London, 1704 - Mthew Beckwith named.
Hartford, 17th May 1655. The court considering the said complaint of Goodey Beckwith of Fairfield, in reference to her husband deserting of her, declare yt by witt, evedence hath benn presented to them of ye manner of her husband's departure, and discontinuance, they judge that if the said Goodey Beckwith, wife of Thomas, shall upon her oath, testify to the magistrates, that are shortly to keep court at Strathford, that her husbands departure was as others have testified it to be, and yet she hath not heard from him any ways since he deserted her, the said magistrates may free her from her said husband. (Connecticut records)
Mathew Beckwith, his death being sudden, ad the result of an accident, a jury was summoned, who ave their verdict, "that he came to his death by mistaking his way on a dark night and falling from a cliff of rocks." His estate was valued at 393 pounds. He left wife Elizabeth, and children Mathew, John, Joseph, Benjamin, and two daughters, widows, the relicts of Robert Girard adn Benjamin Grant, both of whom were mariners, and had probably perished at sea. No other children are mentioned in the brief record of the setllement of the estate; but Nathaniel Beckwith of Lyme may upon supposition be included among his sons.
Mathew Junior, like his father, and most of the family, was a seaman. The births of his two eldest children, Mathew and John, are registered in Guildford, where he probably married and resided for a time. The next three, James, Jonah and PRUDENCE, are on record at New London, and three more, Elizbeth, Ruth and Sarah in Lyme, where he fixed his abode in 1677. These were by his first wife. His sedond wife was Elizabeth, relict of Peter Pratt, by whom he had one daughter, named GRISWOLD, all of these children are naemd in his will except Sarah. He died June 4th, 1727.
The first Mathew Beckwith died in 1680 or 1681, and the second Mathew Beckwith married Elizabeth Griswold. It is the Mathew who died in 1680/81 who was killed "by a fall in a dark night on a ledge of rocks".
Joseph and Nathaniel Beckwith, sons of Mathew Sr., settled in Lyme; John and Benjamin, in New Lonon. John Beckwith had a deposition presented in court in 1740, stated that he had lived at Niantic Ferry for seventy years.
A Thomas Beckwith, poor child, was sent to Mr. Weld by the Parish of Tuling, in Essex, England - was freed? Feb 4 1645.
I've seen different versions of Mathew Beckwith's parents and date of birth in Yorkshire.
From pp 1485-1486 of "Connecticut",
Mathew Beckwith was b about 1610 in England, presumably in Yorkshire. The history of his life to the time he came to Hartford, Connecticut is obscure. He bought the homestead of William Pratt, an original proprietor of Hartford, in 1645. About 1652 he was at New London and Lyme, his land lying in both towns. He was able to give land somewhat liberally to his sons, and it is recorded that in 1675 thirty acres more were laid out to him, all of which he gave to his son Joseph. The inquest at his death showed that he was tehn seventy years old. This is the only evidence as to the year of his birth. He left a widow, Elizabeth, who marreid Samuel Buckland and d before 1690. Children: John, mentioned below, Joseph, Nathaniel, Catherine, daughter, maried Robert Grant; daughter, married Benjamin Grant. (No Mathew?)

.Matthew must have been a colorful person. He often came to court for disputes with people, drunkenness, and debt. I wondered if there were more to the story of falling off a cliff on a dark night.
