Notes
General:
Mary and John Clearing House Vol 18, Part 2, has this on him: p 89

Michael Humphrey appeared in Windsor, CT in 1643. Until 1991 it had been accepted that he was the son of Samuel and Susanna Humphrey who were in Lyme Regis, Dorset in 1648. This was based on a letter they signed to Michael Humphrey in that year. Past reserachers could not expand on this ancestry because the Lyme Regis parish registers had not survived.

The mystery was solved in 1991, when Douglas Richardson of Tucson, AZ, found that some of the Bishop's Transcripts of Lyme Regis did survive. Thsoe that survived are: a few after 1579, 1608-1609, 1613-1617, 1620-1621, 1623, 1625-1628, 1630-1634, and then continuously from 1666 forward. Samuel and Susanna Humphrey above were not the parents of Michael Humphrey but a younger brother and sister. Richardson's findings appeared in the Search series, Vol 16, pp 139-41. The following is a condensation of this article:

1. Michael Humphrey - bapt 31 Jan 1577/8, Honiton, Devon (parents not listed) probably descended from teh large Humphrey family in Honiton, Devon (15 mi NW of Lyme Regis). Probaly died bef 24 Jan 1648/9, the date of teh letter mentioned above. He married (1) Ann __ by 1607, who was buried 14 Oct 1613, Lyme Regis. He m (2) Martha Pride, 4 Jul 1615, Bridport, Dorset. She was living 24 Jan 1648/9, in Lyme, Dorset.

Children by first and second wife listed.

Michael Humphrey was one of them.

Michael was a merchant and trader adn was not particularly religious in his younger days. IN 1667 he and James Eno protested the paying of taxes for the support of the ministry of Windsor, CT, but he later joined the church in Simsbury. He evidently carried on trade with his brother, Samuel, in France.

Five children listed. I have a sixth child among the three I had listed, and no idea where he came from. He lived there and it seems to be based on something.

From Dorset England list, June 5 2007:

This Michael is possibly the father of my ancestor Michael Humphrey, bapt. 10 Sept, 1620, in Lyme Regis.

Mike Humphhrey is still unsure that the elder Michael, father of Michael b 1620, was Michael Humphry of Honitan, 1577, and not another Micael from elsewhere. (and maybe not a Michael from Chaldon, 15xy.) I've just received these results of a marriage search by the Dorset Historical centre, confirming the information I had on the Bridport marriage of Michael Humphrey & Martha Pride. I'm looking for any information that might shed some light on the family of Michael, 1620, and father Michael, mother Martha. There were 7 children in Lyme Regis. The elder Michael may be Michael Humphrie, bapt 31 Jan, 1577, in nearby Honiton, Devon. Or Michael Humfrey of Chaldon, whose wife was Dorothy Bawler. --------------------- Another tantalizing find from the Dorset HistoricalCentre: a Michael Humphry, and Arthur Humphry, alias Arthur Hues, are cited together in 1613 in some court proceedings. From past searches in Devon, I know that some of the Humphrey (Humphry) families there had changed their surname from Hues to Humphry. Does anyone have any details of the Hues/Humphry family in/near Honiton and relationship with Humphrey(Humfrey) in Lyme Regis ?? Thank you .. Mike Humphrey ... ================================================= In a message dated 5/16/2007 2:49:37 P.M. Pacific Daylight Time, Mikenhumphrey writes: My last post had many questions. I'll winnow down to a single inquiry here - I'm seeking information about: Michael Humfrey (Humphrey) of Chaldon, father of John Humphrey, who emigrated to Massachusetts and returned later to England. I have a copy of the visitations of Dorset, 1623, and entry for this Michael, wife Dorothy Bawler, & son John, bapt 1597. We have A2A records of business dealings in Cornwall, and possibly York, 1615. The surname is spelled Humfrey, Humfreys or Humphrey, all referencing residence in Chaldon. To date I've never found birth/marriage records. He died in London, 3 April, 1626. His son John is well -documented. Looking for BMD records. This Michael is possibly the father of my immigrant ancestor, Michael Humphrey, bapt. 10 Sept, 1620, Lyme Regis. Any information would be greatly appreciated ... Mike Humphrey ...

Doris .... Yes, my current data on the elder Michael's family leads me to believe that he was married twice: (1) to Susanna(h) (Ann?) surname may have been Shewers. Place/date unknown. Parish records for Lyme Regis show burials of sons Michael, Samuel, daughter Sarah, and wife Ann? (undecipherable in my copy) in 1613. (2) to Martha Pride, Bridport, 4 July, 1615. I have Parish records for 7 children including my ancestor Michael, 1620, Lyme Regis. Circumstantial of course, but it makes sense to me that given the common sons' forenames Michael & Samuel, that the elder Michael was married twice. Son Michael #1 was buried a few months before Michael #2 was born, and son Samuel #1 died 8 years before Samuel #2 was born. Another logical possibility is that there were 2 different elder Michael Humphreys, possibly related, and the 2nd (later) family used the forenames Michael & Samuel to honor the 1st families sons. And again my basic question: was the elder Michael from Honiton, 1577, Chaldon, 15xy, or another Michael from elsewhere. --------------------------------- With information received only yesterday from the Dorset Historical Centre I see Arthur Humphry, alias Hues, and a Michael Humphry of Lyme Regis, 1613, cited together in a court hearing. This particular spelling, "Humphry", was prevalent in Honiton at the time, and we have other evidence of men changing their surname from Hues to Humphry. A2A shows records also of a reverse change, from Humphry back to Hues. Was Michael Humphry of Honiton from a family with surname Hues in a previous generation??? I would greatly appreciate any information shedding light on this question. Below I've copied information from my initial post, about a week ago: the Parish records I've seen for the 2 Michael Humphrey(ry) families in Lyme Regis in the early 17th centrury. Best wishes ... It appears that there was likely a prior (1st) marriage of the elder Michael with Ann X, and burial records for 3 children, all before 1615. Mike Humphrey wrote me on June 6 that he had just received info from the Dorset Historical Centre.

Arthur Humphry, alias Hues, and a Michael Humphry of Lyme Regis, 1613, were cited together in a court hearing. This particular spelling, "Humphry", was prevalent in Honiton at the time, and there is other evidence of men chanin their surname from Hues to Humphrey. Was Michael Humphry ofHOniton from a family with surname Hues in a previous generation?
