Families living in the Indianapolis area on June 1, 1890

Updated 22 July 2002

Following the lead of David A. Lossos (Genealogy in St. Louis), and the inspired initiative of a woman in Maine, to whom this idea belongs, I am hosting this page as a forum for the reconstruction of the 1890 census data for Indianapolis, Indiana. Consequently, I am seeking submissions of census data - from 1890! As you are probably aware, for all intent and purposes, nearly the entire U. S. Federal Census of 1890 was destroyed by fire in 1921. However, using sources such as family Bibles, the 1880 U.S. census, the 1900 U.S. census, and city directories, it is possible to reconstruct what our ancestors' households looked like in 1890. If your ancestors lived in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1890, and you are interested in partaking in this project you can send me your data in the format outlined below.

Pretend it is June 1, 1890, and you are answering the census taker's questions.
Please give the following information (IN EXACTLY THIS FORMAT):

HEAD OF HOUSEHOLD full name (SURNAME, first middle); date born (day-month-year); relationship (Head, Wife, S-Son, D-Daughter, etc); sex (M=male or F=female); race (W=White, C=Colored, I=Indian, A=Asian); age (rounded to year = 1890 - birth year); place born (town-county-state or country)

SPOUSE's full name (maiden surname in ( )'s and include the same information as the Head of Household's

CHILD'S full name and include the same information as the Head of Household

NOTES: Include address of enumeration, city, county, state plus anything else you deem pertinent.

SUBMITTED BY: Name of submitter. Snail mail and/or <E-Mail address>.
