William and Elizabeth DeARMOND McELHENIE
Dauphin Co, PA * Huntingdon Co, PA

Elizabeth DeARMOND and William McELHENIE were both born and raised in central Pennsylvania, she in Dauphin County [map (south of Northumberland Co)] and he in Huntingdon County [map (south of Centre Co)]. [PA state map] When Elizabeth's parents moved north to Northumberland Co PA, probably in 1783, she may have moved with them, but the next year, on April 22, 1784, she married William. The details of how they met and married are not yet known, but they had 10 children together and lived in Huntingdon Co PA.

The dates of birth for the 10 children is from research done by Denis Adams on the old (now archived) GeoCities site. See his surname index.

This does not seem to be the Mary and John Hazelet buried in Highland Cemetery, Light Street, Columbia County, PA. This Mary was born around September, 1773 (not 1785) and died 12 May 1858 (84). This other John Hazelet Sr. was born about 3 Feb 1773 and died 19 Feb 1846 (73).

Denis Adams' online GED form (archived GeoCities.com) shows
*William and Elizabeth Dearmond McElhenie's son
*Thomas Dearmond McElhenie (1787-1871)
    married Margaret Elizabeth EAKEN
    (dau of John and Margaret CLARK EAKEN).
    Thomas and Margaret had a son,
*Thomas Jefferson McElhenie (1826-1893)
    born 4 July 1826 in Centre Co PA
    died 18 Mar 1893.

Adams' site has a considerable list of McElhenie's, but no other Thomas DeArmond McElhenie (1849-1924) an Ohio and NY pharmacist whose biography (without naming his parents) is in the "Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences".

Thomas Dearmond McELHENIE (1787-1871) was about 63 years old when pharmacist Thomas DeArmond McELHENIE (see below) was born in 1849. Perhaps the latter was his grandson?

Thomas Dearmond McELHENIE married Margaret Elizabeth EAKEN

In 1998, Mary Saggio (then at [email protected]) queried readers about Thomas and Margaret with some information she had:

MC ELHENIE/EAKIN - Centre Co. [PA] I am researching Thomas McElhenie (also spelled McElheny, McElhennie) who was born in Huntingdon Co, PA in 1787. He married Margaret Eaken (or Eakin) from Centre Co on December 12, 1812. Her father was the youngest of eleven brothers. Thomas and Margaret lived for 15 years on one of the many farms owned by James Duncan in Penn's Valley. In the winter, Thomas carried on trade between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, crossing the mountains. They had nine children (2 died in infancy): William, John, Margaret C., Elizabeth K., James, E., Thomas J., and Jane. In 1834, they moved to Ohio. I would appreciate any information on the family of Margaret Eaken and/or McElhenie.
* T.J. (Thomas J.?) and S.B. (Sarah B.?) McElheine lost 3 children to various diseases in Plankerville (Wayne Co OH near Wooster) in 1860 and 1866 per GenForum. Thomas J. and Sarah B. are listed in the 1870 census for Chippewa Twp, Wayne Co OH in GenForum with 3 children.

Another Thomas Dearmond McELHENIE (ca 1850-after 1922) [FindAGrave shows Thomas (1849-1924)] was a pharmacist in Ohio from 1865. In 1872 he joined the American Pharmaceutical Association. His biography is online in pdf. (Still checking their relationship)

Partial biography: "He entered the drug business in 1865, engaging with Zimmerman & Company, wholesald and retail druggists of Wooster, Ohio; in 1870 he matriculated at the Philadelphia College of Parmacy, and graduated in 1872. During the college years Mr. McElhenie was employed by Lancaster Bros., successors to William Hodgson, who for a time was partner of Daniel B. Smith, first president of the American Pharmaceutical Association. After graduation Mr. McElhenie returned to Ohio and accepted a postition as chemist with Benton, Meyers and Canfield of Cleveland, but an attack of typhoid fever soon thereafter compelled his return home. In 1874 he engaged with George C. Sands, New York, succossor to Prof. P. W. Bedford, and in 1876 he bought the store [in Brooklyn, NY] which he developed into his present business, March 27 [1922] concluding the forty-sixth year of his ownership. Later, during the same year [1876] Mr. McElhenie was married, at Wooster, Ohio, and last July [1921] it was our sad duty to report the demise of the life companion, who had shared his joys and sorrows for more than forty-five years." [NOTE: It would seem that Bella was his wife who died in July 1921 in NY.]

FamilyTreeMaker: Thomas D. McELHENIE (b 1850 OH) was married to Bella A. FISHER (b 1850 PA). They both died after 1920, perhaps in Brooklyn, Kings County, NY. Thomas, aged 70, was proprietor of a drug store in Brooklyn. The 1920 census showed 2 daughters living with Thomas and Bella: Gertrude, aged 33 (ca 1887 NY) and Hazel McELHENIE HANSON, aged 30 (ca 1890 NY). Hazel's daughter Dorothy HANSON aged 8 (ca 1912 NY) and son Robert HANSON aged 5 (ca 1915 MD). Apparently, Thomas and Bella had moved (from Wooster, OH) to NY by 1887 [His biography indicates he bought the NY drug store in March 1876, returned to Ohio to marry Bella A. FISHER before returning to Brooklyn NY later that year, 1876.]

Richard C. DeArmond's research (11/2012):
Elizabeth was born in Pennsylvania in 1765 and died about 1838. She married William McElheney, b. about 1765 in PA and died on the 22nd of January 1819 in Geneseo, Ontario, New York, USA. They had five children:
Mary, b. 1785;
Thomas DeArmond, b. 1787, d. 1871;
Margaret, b. 1789;
Jane b. 1792;
Elizabeth b. in 1793.
The parents of William are unknown.
I have one descendent for Jane who was married to David Torrence 1782-1864:
James Torrence 1820-1907.
Her mother was Elizabeth DeArmond, 1765-1838.
Her grandfather was Alexander Diermond (DeArmond) [not Thomas?], most likely the brother of my Irish ancestor John Diermond, 1714-1775 - he lived in county Donegal, Ireland (North)
