History of William and Susannah (WALKER) JENKINSWilliam JENKINS, 1762-1833, born in Wales. At the age of 14, he visited his uncle in Ireland and fell in love with his cousin, Susannah WALKER, born 1764. William's uncle was opposed to the marriage because of their tender ages. Susannah was 13. They eloped to America in 1777 and married at the age of 15 for William and 14 for Susannah, then settled in Isle of Wight County, Virginia. William joined the Virginia militia when only 15 years old and served throughout the Revolutionary War, his exploits reading like those of a mature man. After several years in Isle of Wight County they moved to Pittsylvania County where they remained until 1807 when they moved by oxteam to Ohio. He and his family settled in Cincinnati and bought 80 acres of land on the present site of Main Street, which he later sold. He then moved to Butler County and settled on Dry Fork. He died in Okeana at the age of 71. Susannah died at the age of 88. Source #2: History and Biographical Cyclopaedia of Butler County, Ohio (1882) William and Suzannah's sons William (Jr) and James JENKINS and grandson Charles SHIELDS are mentioned several times in the sections on Morgan township and Okeana in relation to stills, etc. The biography for Alexander Walker DeARMOND, in that same book, states that "William JENKINS (Jr), one of their relatives, was a soldier in the war of 1861." |
"William JENKINS I born 1762, died 1833, buried at Okeana. He owned what is now the village - was the first Post Master, Justice of Peace, etc.(Charles then listed the children, their spouses, and some comments which are incorporated below).
"The witnesses of the will of Reuben GEORGE are children of William 1st. We are descendants of William 2nd. William 1st, William 2nd, and their wives lie in the old JENKINS cemetary on the JENKINS homestead where your uncle Cary lived near Okeana School."
(the letter continues on, listing Rebecca JENKINS DeARMOND's children, plus some personal comments.)

married Nancy, a cousin. That suggests that William Sr and

Who were these cousins? James was a farmer north of Okeana. He was one of the Jenkins brothers who signed the 1837 will of Reuben George Sr..
