Margaret (LYNN) GEORGE
Margaret LYNN, the first wife of Reuben GEORGE Jr, is a puzzle. We know that they married on March 10, 1825, in Butler County, OH. But who were her parents, and when was she born?

James H. LINN had a daughter, Margaret (1806-1828).

Reuben GEORGE's Margaret apparently was not the daughter of James H. LINN, son of Adam and Jane Isabelle (Dickerson) LINN who came from Westmoreland County PA, and were in Butler County OH by 1804. Records show that James H. Linn's daughter Margaret at first was a likely possibility. Being born December 2, 1806 in Ohio, she would have been the right age for Reuben Jr.. But Margaret died either September 18, 1828 or September 20, 1828, just days after Reuben GEORGE married his second wife, Nancy McCOTTER, on September 11, 1828. The second problem is that Pat Murray wrote in 2000 that Margaret LINN born December 2, 1806 actually had married William PATTERSON and died September 20, 1828 probably in Montgomery Co IN.

There were only a few other Margaret Lynn/Linn's in Butler Co OH around this time. Adam Linn Jr. had a daughter named Margaret Linn, born 1814 in Ohio, but she married Louis Roff and lived in Sidney, OH, per Louis Linn, 1999.

So the search for the parents of Margaret Linn/Lynn GEORGE - and whether she and Reuben Jr had a child -goes on.

There is no record that Reuben Jr. and Margaret had any children during their marriage from 1826 to her death, presumably about 1827-8. But there is circumstantial evidence. Reuben took his family west about 1844-45 to settle in hilly Andrew County, MO. On August 25, 1847, Reuben Jr.'s eldest known daughter, Elizabeth George, married Alexander Baily in Andrew County, MO. Two years earlier, on January 19, 1845, a Mandy George had married Charles Shipman in Andrew County, MO. There was a John George listed in the 1850 Andrew County census, but no reason to think he had a daughter, Mandy. The Shipman family was not listed in the 1850 census for Andrew County, having left the area for Wisconsin. Being born in 1826 in Ohio (per a Shipman resource), and getting married in Andrew County, MO, are two clues suggesting that Mandy George Shipman may have been Reuben (and Margaret)'s daughter.

Reuben (Jr) and wives Timeline:
1803 - (June 5) Reuben GEORGE Jr born WV

Family History
Reuben George, Jr., born June 5 1803, was about 9 when his parents moved from the Monroe/Greenbrier Co VA (now WV) area down the Ohio River to settle in the rolling hills of Morgan township, Butler County Ohio, north of Cincinnati, about 1812.

Reuben Jr. was 21 when, on 10 Mar 1825, he married Margaret LYNN in Butler County, OH. Currently, neither the identity of Margaret's parents nor proof of whether Reuben and Margaret had a child has gone beyond speculation.

Surely, Margaret had died by the time Reuben GEORGE married his second wife, Nancy McCOTTER, on 11 Sep 1828, also in Butler County. There is no record of any McCOTTER families living in the county, but again there is some speculation. Not knowing Nancy McCOTTER GEORGE's parents name, I also don't know if she and her sister-in-law, Jane McCOTTER GEORGE (wife of Reuben's younger brother Enoch) was Nancy's actual sister as well.

About 1844, Reuben Jr and Nancy George left Butler County OH for Andrew County MO, north of St. Joseph, MO. The family settled near the 101st River. Later, he and Nancy moved across the Missouri River west to Doniphan County, KS about 1855 where they continued farming. Reuben died of cancer on September 20 1869. Nancy George continued living in Doniphan County, attending an occasional picnic for the many residents of the county from Ohio. She died in September 1898.

Amanda George SHIPMAN:

I may never be able to prove this, but the dates and circumstancial data suggest that Amanda George SHIPMAN was the daughter of Reuben and Margaret (LYNN, LINN) GEORGE of Butler County, OH. Because of her husband's remarriage in 1828, we know that Margaret died within a few years after her March 10, 1825 marriage to Reuben George Jr.

Different sources indicate that Amanda George Shipman was born May 10 1826 or Jun 24 1826.

Reuben Jr. married again September 11, 1828, still in Butler Co OH, and had at least 5 children with his second wife, Nancy McCOTTER GEORGE. We do know that Reuben Jr. and his brother Enoch moved their families to Andrew County MO in the mid 1840s. Amanda "Mandy" George married Charles Edmund Shipman in Andrew Co MO (Hodges Marriage Records) on Jan 19, 1845. The couple had already left for Wisconsin by the 1850 census.

Similarly to Charles and Mandy (George) Shipman, the Baily family was not listed in the Andrew County 1850 census.
* By the time their first child, Anna Mary "Molly" Baily, was born on September 20, 1848, Alexander and Elizabeth had gone back east to Ohio. One source said Molly was born near Wellsville, in eastern Ohio, at a trading post where the Yellow Creek joins the Ohio River in Jefferson County, Ohio, London Township. However, by the 1850 census for Jefferson County Ohio, the Baily's were listed in Saline township. They apparently stayed in Ohio for several years before returning to Missouri and Kansas, where they spent the rest of their lives.
* Their only son, Thomas Baily, was born in November 1849 in Ohio.
* Emma C. Baily was born, likely in Ohio, around 1852-54. Around 1854, the BAILYs came back to Andrew County, MO and then across the Missouri River to Doniphan County, KS. Elizabeth's parents and other relatives still lived in both of those counties.
* Clara Baily was born in Andrew County, Missouri about 1855-56.
* Amanda Gertrude "Gerty" Baily was born in 1857 probably in Doniphan County, KS. The same year, Alexander apparently bought land in Andrew County MO from his father-in-law, Reuben George.
Son and brother Thomas Baily died about 1859 before the 1860 census in Kansas. Alexander was in the Civil War. Elizabeth died in Osage Co KS in 1867 with her baby daughter, Elizabeth. Both were buried in the Burlingame KS Cemetery. Alexander and his daughters then moved to Emporia (Lyon Co) KS where he eventually remarried and later died.
