Henry "Harry" N. Fitch, son of James "Henry" and Louise Alice "Allie" (GEORGE) FITCH, was born on 14 December 1887 in Steele, ND, per his WWI registration form, June 5, 1917. At the time of his registration for the draft, he was a student at a University in Minneapolis, MN, with no parents and no wife.

Later, he married Fannie E. Foote, and had 2 children:

* Ray Foote Fitch, born 11 July 1923 in NYC, married Betty Jo Millspaugh. Ray's middle name was his mother's maiden name, Foote. He and Betty Jo had 6 children, and lived in Evanston IL, Muncie IN, Cambridge ENGLAND, Washington DC, Elinendorf AFB AK, San Antonio TX, and Sacramento CA. Ray was a Colonel in the US Air Force.

* John Clifford Fitch, born 29 August 1925 in Muncie IN, married Wilmuth Hill, born 31 August 1925 near Parker City, IN.

Both boys were living with their parents in Muncie, Delaware Co, IN for the 1930 census, taken April 7. Further information from the census showed that Harry was born in ND (* about 1897, not 1887 per WWI registration), Fannie was born in SD (about 1903), Ray born in NY (1923), and John in IN (1925).

The 1967 George Reunion in Richmond, IN was the 50th anniversary of the reunion. In the booklet for that event, the Fitch family was noted:

"Later in the 1940's through the letters of Grace Roberts Bias, descendants of Enoch George, who had gone to Missouri in 1850 were found to be living in Muncie, Indiana. Dr. Harry N. Fitch, who was then teaching at Ball State Teachers College, was happy to find so many relatives of his mother Alice G. Fitch near-by. He came often to the reunion, sometimes bringing with him his brother, William Fitch of Washington D.C. and others of his cousins. Dr. Fitch last attended a reunion in 1957, but still sends yearly greetings to the reunion." (page 7)

Harry and Fannie both died 30 July 1968, possibly in California.

Biographical obituaries of John Clifford FITCH and his wife, Willi (HILL) FITCH:

Obituary from sfgenealogy.com: Independent Journal - Monday, January 28, 1980 - Page 4

Memorial services for John C. Fitch, 54, a top Reed School District official, will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Redwoods Presbyterian Church in Larkspur.

He died Saturday at a local hospital.

Fitch, a 23-year resident of Corte Madera, was born in Muncie, Ind.

After graduating from high school, he served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After the war, he earned a bachelor's degree in education at Ball State Teacher's College in Muncie and a master's degree, also in education, from Indiana University.

He moved to California in 1950 to work on his doctorate at Stanford University. Before finishing, he was recalled to active duty with the navy in 1951 during the Korean War.

After one year of sea duty with the Navy, he was assigned as a special assistant to the Admiral's office in Tokyo.

He later turned down an administrative position with the American Dependant Schools in Tokyo to return to the United States as a vice principal in Menlo Park.

Fitch later joined the Reed School District, where he worked for 23 years. He was business manager and director of curriculum for the district at the time of his death. He also had been principal of the district's four schools as well as acting superintendant.

He was a member of Phi Delta Kappa, the California Association of School Administrators, a charter member of the Marin County Association of School Administrators and the Redwoods Presbyterian Church in Larkspur where he served as elder several times. He also served many years on the educational advisoryboard of San Quentin School.

He is survived by his wife, Wilmuth Fitch of Corte Madera, principal of Henry C. Hall School in the Larkspur district; two sons, Michael Fitch and Gregory Fitch, both of Corte Madera; and a brother, Dr. Ray Fitch of Sacramento.

The family prefers memorial gifts to Redwoods Presbyterian Church, John Fitch Memorial Fund.

Obituary for Wilmuth Hill "Willi" Fitch
Wilmuth "Willi" Hill Fitch Born August 31, 1925 and given the name Wilmuth Lee Hill. Delivered by her father, at the family farm near Parker City, Indiana. Wilmuth passed peacefully January 31, 2007, after a long struggle with Alzheimer's disease.

As the family's first born child, a "country girl" growing up on a farm in the Midwest, Willi developed an early appreciation for life. As a toddler she rode on the tractor with her dad as he worked the fields. She soon was driving the tractor herself and able to help with the work of the farm in many ways. Willi rode horses before she rode a bicycle, and had a succession of treasured personal horses and ponies until she went away to college.

As a girl of 16, she was appointed to the County Clerk's office in Randolph County, Indiana (her grandfather was a County Commissioner) ... and according to her, was "running the show" after a short time. This was a repeated pattern in later activities of all kinds and she most often assumed leadership roles in whatever she was involved with.

She developed an early love for music of many varieties, played and taught piano, and enjoyed singing and sharing that joy with many people throughout her life.

Willi married John Clifford Fitch of Muncie, Indiana in 1947. Both she and John had graduated from Ball State University and later earned graduate degrees from Indiana University before heading to California.

John, a Naval officer, was recalled to the service and Wilmuth went to join him, stationed in Yokohama, Japan. They stayed there for over a year and their first child was born there. They both cherished their time in Japan, made some lifelong friendships there, later helping to sponsor two young students they had come to know to come to the US and live.

In 1954, they settled in Palo Alto, where Wilmuth first taught school in Cupertino and John did further graduate work at Stanford. The family, now including two sons, moved to Marin in 1958, where John was the first Principal of the newly built, Bel Aire School in Tiburon.

After her children were of school age, Willi returned to work at the Larkspur School District in 1960. She was a teacher, curriculum coordinator, and ultimately served as a Principal at each and every school in the district, at one time or another, until she retired in 1984. She also traveled to Germany as a consultant for curriculum development with the American Foreign Service Schools.

Willi and John enjoyed spending several anniversaries in Hawaii, and lots of time with family and friends at Lake Tahoe. Many blissful hours were spent in the company of good friends, family, and neighbors visiting, contemplating, and recreating on the front porch of the little red cabin next to the "Lake of the Sky" and hiking, picnicking, and sightseeing in the beautiful Sierra Nevada mountains.

A devoted wife and daughter, and dedicated caregiver, Willi spent much time and energy caring for John in his battle with cancer which ended in 1980, and for her folks, Earl and Edith Hill of Parker City, Indiana in their later life.

A caring, compassionate, "can-do" person, Willi will be remembered by family, friends, many former students, and a few remaining colleagues, as someone with a special spirit and touch. Someone who was never too busy to lend a hand, an ear, or to give her opinion or to share a smile, a story, a laugh, or a lesson.

She is survived by sons: Michael and Gregory (Patty); grandchildren, John and Monica; her beloved dog, Rosebud, all of Corte Madera; sister, Barbara Jo Foster (Dr. Gordon) of Miami, FL; brother-in-law, Dr. Ray F. Fitch (Betty Jo), of Sacramento, CA; and numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom loved her very much and will miss her greatly. Memorial services will be private and family prefers memorial remembrances to Redwoods Presbyterian Church, Larkspur, CA, or the Alzheimer's Association.
