He was born at Keyes Ferry, Jefferson Co., W. Va. He bought 182 acres of land in Monroe Co., W. Va., in 1797 for 5 shillings. The county court was held in his home in October of 1801. The "Reed and Donner Party" was organized in the vicinity of Springfield, Sangamon Co., Ill. and started from that city Apr. 14, 1846 for California. Sarah and her family were in this group. Sarah got as far as Kansas (4 miles above the mouth of Blue River, near Manhattan, Ks.) and died. An inscription was cut on a tree of her death. The party stopped to pick up other families and headed west. Only 45 of the original 81 persons survived that winter in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The pass is called "Donner Pass." A monument has been erected at that site.

Mary was the daughter of John and Agnes Adams. Susannah (Susan) was the daughter of Robert Cowan and Susan Woods. He was born near Ashville, N.C. He was a Captain during the Indian War. In 1792, his company of 42 men were attacked near Crabonchid while defending the stations in the Cumberland. The Indians, 56 strong, created a panic and attached. One of Samuel's men was unhorsed near the Indian line and Samuel at once seized the horse and led it near him, so his man might mount again but Samuel's own horse was shot from under him and he took to a tree, where he was met by an Indian with uplifted tomahawk. He caught the warrior's arm and uttered an Indian word meaning friendship, which the brave eased off and led him to the chief where for a time he was free from danger. While this was being done, every Indian near enough struck him with the flat side of his tomahawk. This diversion was in favor of Samuel's panic-stricken men, only three others were killed. A relief party was set out to find Samuel's body, because he was believed to have been killed. When they arrived at the tree where Samuel had hidden, they found fragments of some paper. This paper contained the roll of the company and had been torn to pieces by Samuel. Samuel was taken to Willtown where his fate was in suspense for three days. He was made to run the gauntlet, his feet and hands made fast and the Indians threw him over their heads to see what the effect would be on his nose, but his life was spared and he was adopted into the wolf clan of the Cherokees. The Indians wanted peace, so 8 of the braves escorted Samuel to his home in Blount Co., Tn. The only ransom they asked was a key of whiskey. Samuel was about forty at the time he was captured and his hair being brown, but on his return his hair was gray and his body was scarred and beaten severely. He resided for some time near the Teclico Blockhouse, where the Indians came to trade. When a native from Willtown came across the river, he would say "Cananla, Cananla" meaning Peace, Peace and then spend days with their brother of the wolf caln. Samuel and his family finally settled at Winchester, Tn. He was a member of the first convention that formed the State of Tn. He is buried in Woods Cemetery, near Mingo Swamp, northwest of Belvidere, Tn.

They met Texas style in 1970 at a joat barbecue held in a Dallas apartment complex where the both lived. Bob has a bachelor's degree in business administration from Texas Tech. in Lubbock. He was a management trainee with General Motors. Cynthia, a former cheerleader and history major, graduated from the University of Texas and worked as a management consultant at the now defunct U.S. Civil Service Commission.
The soon married and moved for a few months to Arizona, where Bob was a Chevrolet district manager. But a chronic desire to sontrol his own destiny asserted itself so he quit his job. Before they left, however, they had time to develop their first attachment to a locale. They had rented a house in Sedona, a town in a canyon of craggy beauty, inhabited by retirees, artisans and such movie people as Jane Russell.
Back in Dallas, Bob found work as a counselor at a small personnel agency. Cynthia, who had been on leave, returned to her job at the Civil Service . In 1973, Bob set up his own one-man executive recruiting office. This involves finding mid-level employees for companies. In 1979, Cynthia started working for the Merit Systems Board as an office manager. This agency oversees the federal governments hiring and firing practices. They currently reside at 6526 Chevy Chase, Dallas, Tx. 75225.

In the fall of 1779, the Pauley party, consisting of John Pauley, wife and child, Mr. Wallace, Capt. James Pauley, Margaret and child, and Bruce Miller left Handley's Fort near Union to go to Kentucky. They followed the trail down by Wood's Fort, to New River, crossed the river near the mouth of Rich Creek, and were overtaken by Indians about five miles from the mouth of East River.
Capt. James Pauley, Wallace and the two children were killed. Margaret was dragged from her horse and knocked senseless by an Indian club, and John Pauley was mortally wounded. Believing that his wife and child were murdered, John Pauley, although mortally wounded, made his way back to Wood's Fort, where he died the next day of his wounds.
Margaret was taken to the Indian towns on the Miami, where she was adopted by Chief White Bark. She was finally released and returned to her people at Union, Va., around 1785.
Tridly was from Union. He was a delegate to the Virginia State Assembly in the 1819-1820 term. He also served as a Captain in the Military.
Margaret and Michael are buried in the Union Cemetery.
