He graduated from Menlo High School in 1943. At the age of 12, Bob suffered a bout with poliomyelitis which left his left leg impaired and handicapped him but little. Following high school he attended a short course at American Technical School in Des Moines. There after, he was employed as a mechanic by the Fontanelle Implement Company, McVay Chevrolet and Kirlin Auto Companies in Greenfield for several years. During World War II, he and his wife worked in civil service positions at Hickam Field, Honolulu, Hawaii, located adjacent to Pearl Harbor.
Thel was born in Jefferson twp., Adair Co., Ia, the daughter of Arthur William Keller and Grace Iona Phillips. She was a public school teacher. Her and Bob were married in Des Moines, Ia.
In November 1948, Bob ran on the democratic ticket and was elected to the office of Adair Co., Clerk of the District Court in which capacity he served just short of 15 years. He was also president of the Greenfield Service Club in 1953 and 1954. He served as treasurer of the Adair County Fair Board until 1963, a period of from ten to twelve years. In the fall of 1963, he began working for the Farmers Cooperative Elevator in Greenfield as Bookkeeper, later also becoming credit manager. In January 1975, he was elected manager and served the cooperative which his grandfather, Loren Sulgrove, helped to organize in 1921, being the first president of the board of directors. He left the Coop in January 1979.
Bob and Ethel presently reside at R32 Box 2, Greenfield, Iowa, 50849. Ethel is the researcher for this lineage.
