Biography for child #7 Ephraim "Johnson" and Rachel COLYAR McCLEARY's son, Ephraim J. (1848-?) and Clare (Diffendarfer) McCleary
Biographical and Historical Record of Kosciusko County, Indiana; 1887; p 606-607
Ephraim J. McCLEARY, farmer, section 23, Wayne Township, was born in this county Jul 8, 1848, where he was reared and educated in the district schools. He was married September 3, 1872, to Clara E. DIFFENDARFER, daughter of Henry and Leah DIFFENDARFER, of this county, formerly of Pennsylvania. Her father is deceased.

Mr. and Mrs. McCleary have four children -- William H., Annie L., Lillie M. and Gladdis E..

Mr. McCLEARY owns forty acres of well-cultivated land, and is a successful farmer. In politics he is a Democrat.

The parents of our subject, Ephraim and Rachel McCLEARY, were natives of Virginia and Maryland respectively, and emigrated to Ohio when young, afterward removing to Michigan, where they were married. In 1832 they came to Kosciusko County, and entered 160 acres of land near Leesburgh, for which Mr. McCLEARY paid $1.25 per acre. The title to this land, although he had improved eighty acres, was invalid, owing to ths being within the limits of the Indian Reserve. This necessitated his removing to other land, and he came to Wayne Township, where he spent the remainder of his days. Like other pioneers he endured some hardships, and quite often hauled wheat to Fort Wayn for three shillings, and 40 cents a bushel. His greatest inconvenience and perplexity were the rough roads. He was one of the very first settlers of the township. Himself and wife were the parents of nine children, of whom six are living -- Joseph, Matilda, George W., Adelia, Ephraim, and Catherine. Both parents died in Wayne Township.

Moses (1815-1865) & Margaret McCleary
Moses and Margaret McCleary came to Kansas in 1856 or '58. They had more than a dozen kids, some born here, some elsewhere. They settled in Gardner, KS.
|
William & Hester McCleary
Their son, William, married Hester and lived in Linwood, Kansas (just across the Kansas River from Gardner in Leavenworth County).

|
Thomas J. Sr & Mae McCleary
(see above)
Thomas and Ida May (known as "Mae Ida" in our family) are my Great Grandparents on my mom's side.

William and Hester had Thomas McCleary Sr., who married Mae and had a farm here in Wyandotte County, then known as Turner, Kansas and now a part of Kansas City KS. They moved to Bonner Springs, KS and had 3 children: Thomas Jefferson Jr., Oscar, and Sadie Mae.

Thomas J. Jr & Edna Pearl McCleary
Thomas married my grandmother, Edna Pearl Wagner and had 12 children. My mother was one of them. Her name was Juanita Pearl. I pretty much know where they are all buried and my notes (not in front of me) has the dates.

My McCleary descent in Kansas would be:

Moses 1815-1865 Gardner Cemetery
William
Thomas Jefferson Sr. 1901-1943
Thomas Jefferson II
Juanita (called "Pat")

You may want to note that it was Oscar (my great uncle) who paid for his brother Thomas' funeral when he died in 1943. Uncle "Bum" as we called him and Aunt Rachel were very fond of me and I spent many overnight stays at their house in Bonner. Sweet people.

Oscar, Sadie, and Tom Jr. are buried in the Bonner Cemetery. Tom Sr. and wife are buried in another remote cemetery in Bonner.

Kansas City, KS researcher Joyce Lawrence's info shows Thomas Jefferson McCLEARY (1901 KS)
was the son of William Wesley McCLEARY, not Thomas Jefferson McCLEARY Sr. (1874 KS).
Joyce posted: "I have tracked my grandfather (Thos J.) to being born in Turner, Ks, which is now Kansas City, KS in 1901.
His father and mother were William Wesley & Margaret Mae McCleary and they had farm at 55th and Metropolitan Street, KCK.
Thomas married my grandmother Edna Pearl Wagner and after living briefly with Tom's parents,
they got their own farm in Bonner Springs, KS where they lived, bore 12 children (8 lived to adulthood) until Thos. J. died in 1943.
