Prehistoric discoveries: Extinction - either preceding (about 13,000 years ago) or following the most recent Ice Age (about 12,000 years ago) with Clovis people arriving in the California area of North America about 11,000 years ago. The Rancho la Brea Tar Pits, now in downtown Los Angeles, are a source of education about the Pleistocene (Ice Age) climate and ancient plants, mammoths, sloths, and people long ago. The "La Brea Woman"'s skull, found in 1914, was carbon dated to have lived 9,000 years ago, before the Gabrielino Indians began living there. Mostly, the "tar pits" yield asphalt and animal fossils. Current Americans, like Tony Baker, continue to study Clovis and other Paleoindian residents of North America by what's left of their tools and of their skeletons, and cause archeologists to study "what if" questions. With more evidence discovered, theories about Clovis change. | ||
California National Historic Trail (National Park Service), as well as the Oregon Trail, were taken by individuals and families heading west for various reasons. Starting at Iowa or Missouri, the trail went through Kansas, Nebraska, Wyoming, Idaho or Utah, Nevada, to California or Oregon. The history and the markers of the trail are organized by the Oregon California Trails Association in Independence, MO. The California Trail with map - was taken by the Donner Party, where 70 year old Sarah Hanley Keyes was the first of the group to die (26 or 29 May 1846, KS). Sarah was the mother of Margret Reed, whose husband James had organized the trip.
