On-line Library Catalogs and InterLibrary Loan Services
for Genealogy (and other) Research

Some books are on-line for you to do direct family history research, such as Cutler's History of the State of Kansas or The History and Biographical Cyclopaedia of Butler County, Ohio. But many books you would like to use are not yet on-line. To access these books, try using online library catalogs to identify and locate books by title, author, or topic. Then order them through your local library with an inter-library loan request.

  4. Kansas Libraries (Blue Skyways)
Researcher Connie Snyder, [email protected], says: Search by Author, Title, or Subject. When you find a book that you are interested in, choose Holdings, to see what library(s) have that book. For instance, put 'Kansas genealogy' in and search by subject. This gives you several categories for further search. If a book is only found in one library, they may not want to loan it out, but will probably be willing to look in the index for a name or whatever you want, then photocopy it for you. I've only had this happen twice to me. If a book is found in one of the regional library systems, then they will most likely loan it. Once you have the name, author, call number, and libraries where its held, take the info to your local library, and request an inter-library loan. There is no charge for this service in Kansas.
  5. Kansas State Library Blue Skyways: index and search: just type "library" or "library homepage". Through the Kansas State Library catalog, you can find any book that is in the member libraries throughout the state, then order them through inter-library loan at your local library.
  6. Southeast Kansas Library System (SEKLS)
  7. Military record index
  8. Cutler's History of the State of Kansas
  9. Kansas Collection (was also "Early Kansas Imprint Scanners" EKIS).
  10. Early Kansas Newspapers (Kansas Collection)
  11. Mid-Continent Genealogy and Local History Library (for fee researcher list)
