Acknowledgements

In God We Trust (our National Motto)

The origin and the significance of this motto are very interesting to those of an historical turn of mnd. The suggestion that the Deity be recognized on the coins of the United States was made by Rev. M.R. Watkinson of Ridleyville, Pennsylvania, to Salmon P. Chase, Secretary of the Treasury, in a communication dated November 18, 1861.

The Secretary of the Treasury, Honorable Salmon P. Chase, under date of November 20, 1861, addressed a letter to James Pollock, Esquire, Director of the Mint in Philadelphia, in which he stated that “no nation can be strong except in the strength of God, or safe except in His defense. The trust of our people in God should be declared on our national coins.” Legislative action December 9, 1863 approved our National Motto- In God We Trust.

Salmon Portland Chase (1808-1873) was a prominent American statesman and Chief Justice of the United States. He served as Secretary of the Treasury under President Abraham Lincoln. He served as governor of OHIO from 1856 to 1860.

The First Prayer in Congress

At the Fitchville, Huron County, Ohio meeting of the Firelands Historical Society, the following was presented by Mrs. King, and read. “In Thatcher’s Military journal [sic] under date December, 1777, is found a note containing the identical ‘first prayer in Congress’ made by the Rev. Jacob Duche, a gentleman of great eloquence. Here it is, a historical curiosity.”

“O, Lord our Heavenly Father, high and mighty King of Kings, and Lord of lords, who dost from Thy throne behold all the dwellers on earth, reignest [sic] with power supreme over all the kingdoms, empires and governments; look down in mercy, we beseech Thee, on these American States, who have fled to Thee from the rod of the oppressor, and thrown themselves on thy gracious protection, desiring to be henceforth dependent only on thee [sic], to thee [sic] they have appealed for the righteousness of their cause; do they now look up for that countenance and support which thou [sic] along [sic] canst give; take them, therefore heavenly father [sic], under they [sic] nurturing care; give them wisdom in council and valor in the field; defeat the malicious designs of our adversaries; convince them of the unrighteousness of their cause; and if they still persist in their sanguinary purpose, O let the voice of thine own unerring justice sounding in their hearts, constrain them to drop the weapon of war from their unnerved hands in the day of battle! Be thous present, O God of wisdom! and direct the councils of this honorable assembly; enable them to settle things on the best and surest foundations, that the scene of blood may be speedily closed, that order, harmony, and peace may be effectually restored; and truth and justice, and religion, and piety prevail and flourish among the people. Preserve the health of their bodies and the vigor of their minds; shower down on them, and the millions they represent, such temporal blessings as thou [sic] seest expedient for them in this world, and crown them with everlasting glory in the world to come. All this we ask in the name and through the merits of Jesus Christ, Thy son, our Savior, Amen.”

Our Father, We come boldly before your throne, praising you for your mercy, love, and grace. We thank you for blessing each of us and our nation in so many ways. We are grateful for our freedoms and prosperity, for your church and our families. Instill in us the determination to make our country one nation under God. May each person come to enjoy your love and forgiveness. Cleanse us and use us to bring about peace in the hearts of men. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

The Bellevue Church of Christ is a group of people devoted to being the church that Jesus promised to establish as his own in Matthew 16.The local congregation in Bellevue, trying to follow that 1st century example, was formed in 1961. The church met in different places before moving into the present building at 1070 Castalia. Two men are presently being supported as preachers: Edward Scaub and Gordon McWhorter.

ST. JOHN’S LUTHERAN CHURCH

O God, Thou who didst guide the forefathers of our great nation, we would seek out Thy guidance in this hour. We praise Thee for the greatness of our nation, wherein freedom and liberty for all have been brought about through law and justice. We would ask Thee to bless and guide all those in positions of leadership and authority. Send They [sic] spiritual peace as well upon those who guard and defend our nation, and to all who endeavor to preserve democracy in our world. Guide us, O Father, as we endeavor to preserve the precepts and statutes of our land, thereby assuring the possibility of peace and happiness for all, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

On June 10, 1864, a constitution was adopted by Lutherans in Bellevue, known as the Evangelical Lutheran St. John’s Congregation. The Rev. Jacob Dornbirer, who was vicar at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Fremont, was sent over to conduct services and then became the first pastor. The services were held in an old school building on Broad Street where the new addition of the Immaculate Conception School now stands. The congregation purchased the former Methodist Church on Center St. at a price of $2,000 on Dec. 27, 1867. On May 7, 1893 the congregation voted to purchase a lot at the corner of South West and Harrison Streets at at [sic] price of $2,200. May 6, 1894, a resolution was passed to build a church on the lot. August 1, 1894, a Women’s Missionary Society, was started to assist in the building of the new church and furnishing the interior of the church. The Young People’s Society furnished the pews and the Sunday School assisted in furnishing their rooms. Remodeling of the church, was done in 1926. In 1953 the demolishing of the Parish House was started and on Oct. 11, 1953, groundbreaking services were held for the present $225,000 educational building. On Aug. 14, 1960, the congregation broke ground for the present church building. The building was dedicated on Jan. 14, 1962.

OLENA PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

Almighty God, we praise you as the advocate of justice and the giver of freedom. We confess that we have at times neglected rights and restricted freedoms. Forgive us for overlooking wrong and tolerating injustice. Have mercy upon us as a nation, O God. We thank you for our great land which you have blessed and preserved. We are grateful for the freedoms we enjoy as a nation. O God, help us to protect those freedoms and to stand as a living testimony of Your Grace-- through Jesus Christ Our Lord. Amen.

Church founded in 1835, incorporated in 1839 and present building erected in 1861. The bricks for the church were made in Olena.

SAINT ALPHONSUS (Catholic)

SAINT ALPHONSUS Parish, Peru, Ohio, is the oldest Catholic Congregation in the Diocese of Toledo, Ohio. Now, attached as a Sister-Parish to Saint Mary in Norwalk, Ohio it boasts of the fact that from July until November 1841, Fr. John Nepomecene Neumann, C.SS.R (later- from 1852 to 1860-- the Bishop of Philadelphia, Pa., and now Beatified and, hopefully, soon to be canonized, i.e., given the title of “Saint”) resided and worked in this Parish.

CLARKSFIELD SEVENTH DAY ADVENTIST CHURCH

Almighty God at whose word this world came into existence, by whose power earthly kings rise and fall, in whose omniscience this great country was predicted in Holy Writ, we humbly bow before Your majesty. We recognize Your guiding hand throughout our nation’s history, Lord; and we fall prostrate before the wisdom of. Your prophesies of the future. No man can successfully lead this nation into Christianity without the power of the Holy Spirit. As we move from this bicentennial year into new and greater endeavors, help us not to forget to take hold of the hand of Omnipotence. In the name of Christ we pray. Amen.

The Clarksfield Church is on Fitchville River Road and was founded in 1921. They have a membership of about 108. The Norwalk Church rents from the Universalist Congregation at 39 West Main Street, Norwalk and was founded in 1962. They have a membership of about 40.

O God, Our Father, and the Father of all nations, even though all do not recognize Your Fatherhood. We give thanks that our forefathers who established our nation, America, looked to You as their Father and God. As they said, “In God We Trust,” may we never lose sight of Whom we are to trust for help and guidance. we confess we have not always trusted you above all else, and have not kept Your statutes and ways; instead, we have trusted more in ourselves and our might. we have failed You,. O God, and all mankind. We humbly bow before you asking for Your forgiveness and the healing of our nation’s wounds. Have mercy upon us; O Loving Father. Now may we on our 200th Birthday rise again as a great nation so that Your Kingdom may come on earth as it is in Heaven. In the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, Savior, and Redeemer. Amen.

In 1830, a young Methodist minister, Rev. Thomas Barkdull was admitted to the Ohio Conference and appointed to the Elyria circuit. The Clarksfield building came in 1838 with the grounds a gift of Squire Smith Starr. The original cost was $1200 with the people doing the building. In 1848 the church was redecorated and in 1953 a parsonage was built. A Woman’s Society of Christian Service was organized in 1944 with Mrs. Clay Puder as the first president; in 1956 this organization financed the building of a kitchen.

Increase our concern for people beyond our own boundaries and for the poor and afflicted in our own land, that we may be a blessing and an example to all nations. Bring us at last to that day when the whole world shall know peace and blessedness, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we gather to glorify and praise Thy Holy Name. we are thankful for this privilege of worshipping Thee here in this place. We are grateful for Thy Son- Jesus Christ who not only told man about You, but by His example shows us what we can become. We give Thee thanks for the Scriptures which continue to challenge us to live lives more in keeping with Thy will and hope for us.

On this Bicentennial Celebration of our Nation’s founding, we are grateful for the wisdom, love and sacrifice which has gone into making it a great nation. Often we accept our freedom and comforts of living as rights rather than privileges which have been earned by the lives and blood of our forefathers. We acknowledge that our nation often forgets from whence it has come and from whom it has gained its strength. Forgive us as a people when we rely upon armed might rather than Your strength. Forgive us as a people when we demand more from others than we are willing to give. Guide our nation into the future that it shall continue to be the benevolent hand helping wherever needed. Let us see the the proverbial cup of water and crust of bread given in love and concern are still great witnesses of Thy Way. Help us as a people to be sensitive to the blessings we take for granted and feel the sufferings and needs felt by other peoples of the world. When we are unhappy with our nation, help us make constructive change rather than destroy it, that it shall regain Thy vision and continue to show Thy love to the world.

As we pray, we ask Thy blessing upon each person remembered during the silent meditation. Where there is illness of body or spirit, may there be healing. Where there is grief because of death or loss, may there be comfort. Where there is need of a way to live, may Thy way be realized. Where there is hatred, bitterness, apathy, may there be the realization that there is a better way to live. Help us share the times of joy as well as sorrow. In all things help us to return to Thy Sanctuary next Sunday to praise and glorify Thy great name together. Bind us in fellowship and prayer which Thy Son has taught us, in praying, “Our Father….” Amen.

COLLINS UNITED METHODIST
History Comments-
Location- RD 1- Collins, Ohio- on Hartland Center Road-
north of Route 20.

This congregation is worshipping in the third building since the founding of the church. The first was located at East Townsend beside the present Town Hall. The second and present building is in the same location. Fire destroyed the second building in 1931. The present building was constructed in 1931 and dedicated in 1933. To our knowledge, the Collins and West Hartland churches have always been served by the same Pastor who has lived in the Parsonage on Hartland Center Road. The Parsonage land was purchased in 1858 for the purpose of becoming the Parsonage lot. The house was constructed or moved onto the lot shortly afterward.

WEST HARTLAND UNITED METHODIST
History comments-

Location- Corner of Zenobia and Greeniwhc-Milan Roads, south
of Route 18 and east of route 250.

This congregation is worshipping in the original Sanctuary which was built in 1873. A new addition was added in 1973 which contains classrooms, fellowship hall, kitchen, and restrooms. For many years the church’s Sanctuary served as the auditorium for the public school which was located across the road. The children would spend rainy recesses in the buggy sheds. To our knowledge, the West Hartford Church has been served by the same Pastor as the Collins United Methodist Church since Collins was founded. This is unique that two churches would have such a long working relationship.

Our gracious heavenly Father, in a time when the thoughts of persons are apt to be attracted by things, we are especially thankful for our Christian heritage that inclines our hearts’ thoughts to Thee.

During this time of celebration and commemoration we look to the past confessing our sins as a people believing that to the past confessing our sins as a people believing that you will forgive us and gloriously work within us anew. We ask that your blessings and guiding hand be upon those responsible for molding the character of this great nation. Be with us as we endeavor to walk in the light of truth and justice and we will forever give you the praise and honor. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

History Highlights:
Olena Charge or Circuit: Four churches were combined (Peru, Hartland, Olena, and Fitchville). A circuit rider in horse and buggy preached to all churches. He started on Saturday and ending Sunday afternoon.

1914- Church raised and basement was built. The original bell is still used and is in good condition. It was from”Buckeye Bell Foundry 1889-Nanduzen and Tift-Cincinnati. The 137th Anniversary” (April 20, 1837- April 21, 1974)

We thank you for your guidance upon us as a people through these 200 years and help us to realize that the only way we can continue to be strong is to come back to the basic teachings of thy Word. Help us to draw close to Thee again and help us realize that we must rely upon thee in every area of our lives. Dear God give us leaders who will lead our nation closer to Thee and who will seek Thy guidance in their own lives. Amen.

A Bible preaching church, which started in 1961 as the Baptist Mission. In 1969 a new building was erected and renamed The First Baptist Church.

HARTLAND CENTER COMMUNITY CHURCH

Forgive us for overlooking wrong and tolerating injustice. Have mercy upon us as a nation, O God. We thank you for our great land which you have blessed and preserved. We are grateful for the freedoms we enjoy as a nation. O God, help us to protect those freedoms and to stand as a living testimony of Your Grace-- through Jesus Christ Our Lord. Amen.

The first church in Hartland Center was a United Brethren Church organized in 1865 by Rev. Mr. Davis. In 1867 a church building was erected at a site only a few rods from the present location. After more than 75 years of service this building was completely destroyed by a tornado on April 27, 1943. Following the disastrous tornado, the church struggled for survival without a church building and without a regular pastor. In 1951, a reorganization under the name of the Hartland Center Community Church resulted in the purchase from the local Board of Education, the lot on which the new church stands. Ground breaking for the new church stands. Ground breaking for the new church as held July 26, 1953, and dedication service was April 17, 1955. One of the few usable items that survived the tornado is the American flag that is still displayed in the church. The church has continued through the years to be a blessing to the community and a testimony to The Lord.

From all kinds of work, you have called me to Minister in this place called Lyme, and I thank you. Through the tragedies of war and the dangers of traffic and the scourge of disease you have brought me to this, our Nations’ [sic] 200th birthday and I thank You. For providing us to live on this day, in this year, in this country, we lift our praise from the Old Lyme Church on the Ridge to You, dear God, You who always gives a love that forever lives. Accept our re-dedicated spirit today as we enter upon the way of each new day. Accept our trust that “Except the Lord Bless the House, they Labor in vain who build it.” Accept our gratitude for your blessings upon our Nation in its yesterdays and in its tomorrows. Almighty God, on this 200th Anniversary of the founding of the United States of America, we have gathered here at Hunts Corners to remember the many ways you have blessed our country. As we recall once again the story of our nation’s birth we would be mindful of our great heritage of freedom. we thank you today for the freedom of thought, liberty of expression, and opportunity to worship You in a way that holds meaning for us. Grant, we pray, that the light of freedom in our land may never grow dim.

Help us to understand that freedom’s light is holy and that apart from a knowledge of your sovereignty it will flicker and fade. As we think of liberty we would also remember the faith of our fathers. Like them, we would use a right the opportunities granted us out of obedience to Christ. Like our fathers, the goal of our existence is service to You. And it is in worship that we discover how to use our heritage of freedom to Your glory.

O God, save us from the boastfulness and pride that hides behind the banner of patriotism. Keep us from selfishness that hinders experiences of brotherhood. And keep us aware of our responsibility to all men and women. Protect us from the false belief that our country can do no wrong. In our national life give us the courage to proclaim Your moral law and the desire to obey it. Raise up strong leaders among all nations, men and women who respect Your truth and hold Your name in reverence.

Renew our faith in Yourself, Lord God of hosts, so that we may have a new confidence in one another. Fill us with Your truth, O God, so that our group life as well as our individual lives may glorify You. Fill us with Your truth so that our social attitudes as well as our personal devotions may be pleasing to you, O Lord God. we would ask you to keep our sin ever before us. O God, where we have lust for power, increase our desire of purity. Lord God Almighty, hear our prayer offered in the Name of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

O Lord, in an age when we are likely to be attracted by things instead of thoughts, may we look to the scarred face on Cavalry to see molded the mighty leaders of our modern manhood.

Forgive us our sins as American citizens, that we have not recognized the value of those simple and superb virtues which come back today with the recollection of two hundred years. Forgive us, our Father, that we have forgotten our duties of men in a republic, the duties of men and women in the new dawning democracy, the new duties that need to be performed. Forgive us through Your blessing from on high on the entire nation today. Guard the life of your servant and our President, Gerald Ford; guard and guide him and all others in authority by Your Gracious Love. Give us, we beseech You, today the realization of the enormous responsibility of power and leadership, and help us in all the activities of education and charity, that each person may feel their own responsibility as in the days of the establishment of our country. May every person by his or her own gathering of the manna in the morning-time have the fresh inspiration of divine grace in the Leader of all men and the Master of all men, even Jesus the Messiah. Amen.

Father of all nations and ages, we recall the day when our country claimed its place among the family of nations. For what has been achieved we give you thanks; for the work that still remains we ask your help. Grant that under your providence our country may share your blessings with all the peoples of the earth. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The present church edifice was dedicated on May 14, 1876. During this Bicentennial year of the country the parish celebrated the centenary of the dedication on May 9, 1976. The Most Reverend John A. Donovan, D.D., Bishop of the Toledo Diocese was present to be the principal celebrant of the concelebrated Mass of Thanksgiving.

Episcopal services in the Monroeville community were held as early as 1843 in the Presbyterian Church. By 1854, the Parish was well organized and funds were being raised to build a church. On August 8, 1860, stakes for the church were driven and the corner stone was laid September 25, by the Rector, the Rev. Samuel B. Marks and on November 30, 1860, the frame was raised. The church was built at a cost of $3,500. The first services were held in the new church December 8, 1861, and the first Holy Communion was celebrated on Christmas 1861. On February 2, 1864, Bishop McIlvaine, Bishop of Ohio, came to conduct the service of Consecration. On February 2, 1939, the people of Zion Church celebrated the 75th Anniversary of the Consecration and on June 27, 1964, celebrated the 100th Anniversary of the Consecration and also dedicated the new Parish Hall.

FIRST CHURCH- history comments

The first Methodists started meeting in the school house on Lot Thirteen of New London in 1814. The first Methodists Society was officially organized in 1816 with an Elder of the Church, Mr. John Haney, of Haneytown presiding. Haneytown later became known as Savannah. The first house of worship was a wooden structure built- about 1845. The present birck building was constructed on the original lot. Work on it was begun in October 1878 and was completed fourteen months later. In 1878 the people of the community circulated a petition to levy a tax on all property in the village to raise funds for purchasing a town clock. The clock was to be placed in the bell tower of the new Methodist Church. The General Assembly of the state of Ohio passed a bill authorizing such a tax and installation of the clock; it was installed November 1879 and began ringing out the hours in December and continues to the present. The 2005 pound bell used by the clock was purchased with the funds raised by a public subscription, a home talent concert and a social. The bell also rang to announce weddings, funerals, national celebrations and days of rejoicing as well as calling people to the hours of Worship.

GRACE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH- New London, Ohio 44851

Brief History comments:
The congregation of Grace United Methodist Church began in 1900 when the Second Methodist Episcopal Church was organized. For three years the congregation meet [sic] in homes of the members. In 1903 the present building was constructed on Newkirk Street. In 1960 a basement was constructed under the building and it was enlarged. In 1971 a remodeling project was undertaken and the interior of the building was refinished, a new pulpit and altar were installed and a piano was purchased. New pews were also obtained.

Our Lady of Lourdes Parish was erected in 1853, but it was not until 1896 that the first church was built (on St. James St.) and until 1936 that the first full-time permanent resident pastor arrived, Fr. Michael Haley. In 1908 Official Records and Files were kept in New London, whereas all former records are to be found in the parishes from which the priests came. The present parish worships in a newly decorated former Congregational church (purchased about 1936). A number of the clergy who served Our Lady of Lourdes are well-known, but none is more illustrious than that of Rev. John E. Duffy. Fr. Duffy retired from the Chaplains’ Corps of the US Army in 1947 “due to enemy inflicted wounds” received during World War II. He was to die of these wounds and the complications due to them in 1958. It was he, who dedicated the present church to “The Men of Bataan” with whom he served and suffered imprisonment. The Parishioners of Our Lady of Lourdes parish include people living in the neighboring communities of Ruggles, Greenwich, Nova, Clarksfield, Fitchville, Olena, Collins, and the surrounding farm area. There are approximately 162 families with a total membership of approximately 650 parishioners.

So, we rejoice in two experiences this day: You have been with us in the creative functioning of our government system and in the creative functioning of our humble worship as followers of Jesus Christ. We are pleased to be able to call You God the Father.

Since not all has been good in Your sight of our lives or in our nation’s life, You call us to serve You better and to practice the characteristics of godliness openly before all our brethren, religious or political. As we pray to You this day we look forward to the day when all words from our mouths will be acceptable to You. We long for the day when our behavior will be acceptable to You. We dream of the day when all our hopes and wishes will be undertaken from love. We give thanks to You that our dreams as a nation have always outstripped our achievements. So, as we worship this day and celebrate this day of national anniversary, it is necessary for us to still call upon You: lead us on. We are thankful for those of our fathers who dreamed. We are thankful for our fathers who acted on these dreams. We are thankful for our fathers who saw the dreams to be one thing and the action another and cried, “Never again. I am my brother’s keeper.”

We are at a time of commitment in both faith and government. We must decide whether we will live the life of the pretender or to make our stand for righteousness of conduct for all. To this end, Father, we seek to have the future revealed to us: to have our old people dream dreams and our young people see visions of what the republican form of government can become. Through the grace found in Jesus Christ and made available in the Holy Spirit, so cause us to dream, cause us to see visions that will translate the words “Thy Kingdom com…” into a combination of religious living and moral participation in government that will produce a glory to life unknown before: a time of peace, a time of life, and a time of mercy that will reflect glory to God and honor to our land. THE UNITED METHODIST CHURCHES-

These two churches were started as class meetings. The class meeting at New Haven was begun in 1817 while the class meeting at North Fairfield did not begin until 1822. Both were organized churches prior to 1937. They both first met for worship in school buildings.

The New Haven church bought land and began to build its church in 1842 and completed it by spring-1843. The North Fairfield church started a building program in 1843 and completed the church in 1844. Both original structures are in use each Sunday worship in 1976.

During the early years the two churches were parts of different circuits. The North Fairfield church inherited a house and had a minister based here during 1847. IN 1909 the present parsonage at North Fairfield was purchased. While owning a house the New Haven church has not had a minister based there.

1909 saw both church buildings improved slightly. In 1919 the North Fairfield church added a basement to the building. A major remodeling with basement and addition space was undertaken by the New Haven Congregation in 1953. The North Fairfield church doubled its space with an educational wing in 1960. New Haven has added new lighting to its nave this year (1976). The North Fairfield with its present membership of 214 has now been praising God for 154 years. The New Haven church has been so engaged with its current membership of 222 for 159 years.

The Baptist Church of North Fairfield was organized in the fall of 1826. The church building was erected in 1837 at a cost of $2,650.00. The first pastor was Elder Morse who preached once a month for the first year. Extensive repairs were made on the interior of the building in 1851 and 1902. A basement and kitchen were added in 1922. In April of 1929 the Church of Christ and Baptist Churches united. They met in the Baptist Church building because it was larger. The Bell Tower had to be completely repaired in 1969 and now the bell rings every Sunday. More Sunday School rooms became necessary as the church is filled nearly every Sunday and basement curtain dividers were installed in 1975.

The First United Presbyterian Church of Norwalk celebrated the Bicentennial with a special Communion Service held outdoors in the Memorial Courtyard. Based on an eyewitness account of a communion service held in April 1867, the liturgies and prayers were of the 17th and 18th centuries. Following old customs, a bagpiper, beadle and precenter were used. Communion tokens were distributed as mementoes of the day.

The first church building was built in 1838, the second in 1870 and the third (present) in 1967.

May we by the enlightenment and guidance of the Holy Spirit become more fully and truly “one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” Richly bless President Ford and others in authority over us to the end that they may be high in purpose, wise in counsel, and unwavering in duty. God of our fathers, as we enter the third century of our national history, let Your divine benediction rest upon and abide with all of us and our children after us, in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord. This Lutheran congregation was organized 117 years ago under the leadership of the Rev. Wilhelm Schmogrow, who served as pastor for 15 years, until 1874. German speaking Lutherans of Peru and Sherman Townships were charter members. Anton Scheidt donated the site on which a small church building 28 by 40 by 16 feet high was erected. A Sunday School was started in 1861 and a parochial school two years later in which German was taught. From the time of World War I all services have been in English. In 1920 a new daughter congregation, Trinity Lutheran Church, was organized in Monroeville, and some of the Pontiac members were transferred to it. However until 1965 the two congregations were a dual parish under one pastor. The present pastor of St. Peter’s came in March, 1967 after having served for 40 years as a Lutheran missionary in India.

Almighty God, ruler of all nations, we pray for our nation and its people, and for our leaders. May we be mindful of your favor and obedience to your will. Forgive our shortcomings as a nation. And purify our hearts, to know the truth that alone can make us free. Save us from injustice and oppression, from pride and arrogance. and [sic] from greed and self-centeredness. Increase our concern for people beyond our own boundaries and for the poor and afflicted in our own land, that we may be a blessing and an example to all nations. Bring us at last to that day when the whole world shall know peace and blessedness, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The above prayer was used in a joint service with the Ripley Congregational United Church of Christ, Greenwich and the Delphi United Methodist Church held at Greenwich, July 4, 1976 at 10:30 AM.

The church was organized and incorporated as The Free Congregational Church of Ripley. Rev. Joseph Edwards and Mrs. Clarissa Edwards conveyed to the church, by deed, one acre of land “as a site for a Meeting House and Burying Ground,” reserving the right to pasture sheep on the land. The building was dedicated February 11, 1854, remodeled in 1910 and 1965. In 1961 the church became part of the United Church of Christ, and in 1967 the name was changed to the present one. Edwards Grove Cemetery has had additions of acreage made by its Association, the most recent in 1967.

Almighty God, from whom our forefathers sought guidance and strength as they left homeland and settled in a strange land and made it a place of fertile fields, grant us Your divine guidance and blessing as we seek to regain the spirit of our forefathers. Forgive our individual and national sins. Help us to see the error of our ways, to know that “righteousness exalteth a nation and sin is a reproach to any people.” Help us our Father, to be loyal citizens and faithful followers of Christ so that our nation may not only be lifted up but be a Christian witness to all people of the world. Grant those whom we have placed in positions of authority the wisdom to lead us in paths of world peace and domestic tranquility so that our descendents may be heirs to the benefits of a self governed people. Bless thy people Lord in this time of Bicentennial celebration and in the years to come. In he name of Christ, we pray. Amen.

Our Lord, in this year of celebration of two hundred years of growth of our country, slogans surround us. Everyone shouts some slogan about our country. Some say: Love it or leave it. Others say fix it or forget it. Lord we get uptight about the attitude of others toward our country. Help us to know what it means to bring our country under Your judgement. Enable us to see the difference between loving our country and worshipping our country. Open our eyes to the larger World community in which we share life with others. Amen.

The first frame construction built in 1822 was destroyed by a fire- January 4, 1933. The new church was dedicated December 6, 1936.

The Wakeman church was established by people who migrated from the New England states following the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. It is a congregation based on freedom of choice as is part of our national life.

Dear God, We give thanks to thee for allowing us the privilege of witnessing the advent of our country’s 200th anniversary. We humbly pray that the minds and hearts of our people will be touched by your Holy Spirit, and be cleansed from the sickness of greed and hatred. May this anniversary mark the beginning of a deep search to recover some of those basic values on which our country was founded.

First Baptist Church was founded on the premise that all people, great or small, have the right to worship God. Through the 55-year history, we have been known as the “Little Church with a big heart.”

Eternal God, our Heavenly Father, our forefathers set up a noble experiment on these shores. They established a government dedicated to the common good in which, ideally, the interest of no one group would predominate. Each person’s interest was to be for the common good. Under this government we have prospered. For this we thank you. We would be amiss if we did not thank you for the dedication of the men that formed this union; for George Washington who led this nation in battle and piloted her through the first national administration; for Benjamin Franklin, who among his numerous achievements, established our first public library. We are grateful for the positive effect libraries have had upon our country. We are grateful for Thomas Jefferson, who directed this country through its battle for religious liberty by composing the Virginia Act establishing Religious Liberty and thus prepared the way for national religious freedom; for Alexander Hamilton and his campaign for strong financial policy which gave our nation status among the world’s nations; for John Marshall, the superior court chief justice, under whose leadership that court became a great court; for Abraham Lincoln, who held this nation together during threat of destruction by division; for all others, remembered and forgotten, who have given of themselves that this nation might be a great nation. We remember the great Apostle Paul who was proud to be a Roman citizen. Emulating his example, we are also proud to be American citizens. We remember our own ancestors, those known and unknown who crossed the ocean to set up a residence in this country and to cast their destinies with the destiny of this nation. Because of their daring we are now citizens here and we thank you. We thank you for the natural resources… for land and water, for minerals and lumber, for industry and commerce. Grant that we will always respect those resources and not misuse them. Continue to bless our nation. Always give us leaders who will inspire us. And if we are ever called upon to be one of its leaders, grant us the insights of mind, the strength of will, the clarity of purpose that would inspire the deserved confidence of those who follow. Wherein we have erred forgive; when we grow weary, strengthen us; for what has been right, give us humility. Hear our prayer, through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

Almighty God, on this 200th anniversary of the birth of our country, we offer to You our highest praise and our profound thanksgiving. Your providential care, Your bountiful goodness to our land has blessed us beyond expression. we are grateful for the faith of our founding fathers and for their provisions of freedom in our Constitution, including the freedom of worship. Enable us, O God, to steadfastly exercise our own faith and to constantly work for freedom on our cherished land. Grant us the eternal vigilance which is the price of freedom. Grant that we may choose worthy goals for our land as we enter the third century of our existence as a nation. And this we ask in the name of Christ. Amen.

The First United Methodist Church is the oldest Protestant Church in Willard. Throughout 100 years we have helped the Light of Christ to shine in Willard and have sent ministers and missionaries throughout the world.

And finally that Thou wilt most graciously be pleased to dispose us all to do justice, to love mercy, and demean ourselves with that charity, humility and pacific temper of mind which were the characteristics of the Divine Author of our blessed religion, without a humble imitation of Whose example in these things we can never hope to be happy as a nation.
