The following was received from Jim Irwin and pertains to our classmate Ladin (Red) Delaney.
"I just received the sad news that our freind and classmate Red, died
this morning.(Sept. 8, 2010)
I will send more later." The memorial service for Red will be on Tuesday, September 14 at 2pm, at the Herring funeral home chapel. A private internment will occur at a later date. Dec. 10, 1937 -Sept. 09, 2010 |
Ladin "Red" Delaney passed away at his home on Sept. 7,2010. He was 72, when he lost his battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born on Dec. 10, 1937, in Turtle Lake, N.D., to Lydia and James Delaney. He moved to Walla Walla with his parents when he was an infant. He attended Green Park Elementary, Pioneer Junior High and graduated in 1956 from Walla Walla High School, where he was class president before going on to Washington State University. While pursuing academic excellence at WSU, he also found time to get married. In 1958 he married Carol Davis, also of Walla Walla. He graduated from WSU in 1961, with a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering, and then again in 1962, with a master of science degree in sanitary engineering. After receiving his master's degree, Red, Carol, and their 3-year-old daughter moved to Southern California, where Red began his career working for the state of California. Ladin spent most of his career working for the California Regional Water Quality Control Board, San Diego Region. The Regional Board is a regulatory agency of the state of California with a mission of protecting water quality. He began work for the Regional Board in 1962, and worked in various staff positions until his retirement in 1990. At the time of his retirement he was the board's executive officer, responsible for directing all of the staff that carried out the organization's mission. During Ladin's tenure, the regional board was in the forefront of efforts to improve water quality and the environment in areas under their jurisdiction in San Diego, Orange and Riverside counties i'n California. As a staff engineer, Ladin developed many of the regional board's water quality regulatory programs that are still being carried out. He worked on one of the regional board's earliest success stories, the restoration of San Diego Bay, by spearheading efforts to eliminate discharges of municipal a,nd industrial wastes. He later directed staff efforts to identify the impacts and sources of legacy pollutants in the Bay and implement remediation projects. While executive officer he convinced the regional board to mandate innovative and controversialcontaniinated sediment removal projects that were, at that time, unique in California. To his co-workers Ladin was a boss who maintained high standards, developed and brought out the best in his staff members and gave them his complete support. He was also a source of an endless repertoire of stories and jokes, freely provided to any audience at any time and any place. Because of his knowledge of water quality and his ability to charm his audience with stories and jokes he was in heavy demand as a public speaker. In addition to his work with the regional board, Ladin was active in the California Water Pollution Control Association (now California Water Environment Association), serving as president of the local San Diego County section and the statewide organization. After retiring from the state in 1990, Ladin opened his own consulting business, but closed it after five years to spend more time with family. In December of 2004, Ladin and Carol sold their home in San Diego and moved back to their hometown of Walla Walla. Theylived in College Place for a year while building a new home. They moved into their new home in March of 2006, and spent their time putting in landscaping and a garden. . Ladin is preceded in death by his older brother, Larry. He is survived by his wife, Carol; his daughter, Peggy Jo and son-in-law Jim Muratsuchi of Kaneohe, Hawaii; two grandsons; brother, Bill Delaney of Camino, Calif.; sister, Grace Schipporeit of Salem, Ore.; and brother, John Delaney of Walla Walla. A memorial service will be on Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2010, at 2 p.m. at Herrin~ Groseclose Funeral Home in Walla Walla. A private family internment will occur at a later date. Memorial donations may be made in Ladin's name to Walla Walla Community Hospice through the Herring Funeral Home. |
